Resistance To Aqueous Outflow In The Rhesus Monkey Eye; Anatomic And Physiologic Studies In Vitro, Walter Peterson Jan 1971

Resistance To Aqueous Outflow In The Rhesus Monkey Eye; Anatomic And Physiologic Studies In Vitro, Walter Peterson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Perfusion studies carried out in 50 enucleated normal Rhesus eyes suggested that the trabecular meshwork is responsible for 60-65% of the resistance to aqueous outflow, that aqueous outflow pathways in the inner 1/3 to 1/2 of the sclera are responsible for about 25%, that pathways in the outer 1/2 to 2/3 of the sclera account for 10-15%, and that more distal path ways account for very little, if any resistance. An initial opening into Schlemm's canal increased the facility of outflow proportionally much more than did subsequent extension of the incision. Mean facility of aqueous outflow was found to be …

Pasture Legume Varieties And Ewe Fertility, T Marshall, H. E. Fels, H. G. Neil, R. C. Rossiter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH it was first thought that all varieties of subterranean clover would cause ewe infertility, research in the last 10 to 15 years has shown that varieties differ in potency.

The relative level of potency has also been shown to remain consistent for any one variety under normal conditions.

Texas Medical Center --- Its Origins, Houston Chamber Of Commerce

Texas Medical History E-Books

This document details the people and institutions who were instrumental in the establishment and development of the Texas Medical Center (TMC). Biographical information about the founders, role the M. D. Anderson Foundation, and opening of the main institutions in the early 1950s is detailed. A copy of a speech given in 1958 by W. B. Bates, one of the trustees of the M. D. Anderson Foundation, on the history and development of the TMC is significant because he was one of the founders of the TMC.

This document was commissioned by the Houston Chamber of Commerce in 1971 as the …

Infectious Sinusitis Of Turkeys, J Edgar Jan 1971

Infectious Sinusitis Of Turkeys, J Edgar

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Climatic conditions in W.A. are ideal for turkey production if advantage is taken of the wide open spaces. Over-crowded, poorly ventilated quarters are ideal for the spread of infectious sinusitis, and the disease, once established, is hard to eliminate without a complete change of birds.

This article provides advice for the prevention of this important disease at a time when turkey raising is increasing in W.A.

Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus Jan 1971

Effects Of Thiabendazole Treatment On Weight Gains By Nebraska Range Cattle, D. L. Ferguson, D. A. Reynolds, M. J. Twiehaus

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The results of these studies indicate that a high percentage of Nebraska range cattle are infected with gastrointestinal parasites, but at a subclinical level of infection. However, significant differences were not observed in average daily gain between thiabendazole-treated range cattle and unmedicated controls in three of four field trials. In the three trials the average improvement in daily gain in animals receiving thiabendazole once averaged .01 lb greater than untreated controls. During a 120 day grazing period this improvement would not be sufficient to pay for the wormer or cost of additional labor.

Regional Distribution Of 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Dependent Dopamine-N-Methyl Transferase In Rat Brain And Its Presence In Human Brain, Douglas A. Berv Jan 1971

Regional Distribution Of 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Dependent Dopamine-N-Methyl Transferase In Rat Brain And Its Presence In Human Brain, Douglas A. Berv

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Since the introduction of the hypothesis that abnormal transmethylation of biogenic amines may be associated with mental illness, transmethylation processes have been shown to be important in the production of biologically active amine derivatives. Laduron has shown that dopamine can be N-methylated with an enzyme from rat brain that requires 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (5MTHF ) as a methyl donor. This study shows that the methylation reaction which produces epinine from dopamine is greatest with supernatant from homogenized caudate lobe as compared to the cerebellum, hippocampus, cortex, and raphe nucleus: the brains of male rats were dissected and homogenized, the supernatant was …

Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter Jan 1971

Cheating As A Function Of The Labeling Of Natural Arousal, Richard A. Dienstbier, Pamela Osbourne Hunter

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

One hundred and five college freshmen were given one of two different side-effects lists associated with a placebo pill. In a “second” experiment, subjects experienced failure on a vocabulary test, supposedly predictive of college success, and received an opportunity to cheat on the test by changing answers. Although it was anticipated that all subjects who considered cheating would experience some arousal, it was predicted that those subjects told to expect drug-induced side effects related to sympathetic arousal would not label their experienced arousal as fear or guilt, and would cheat more than the subjects who anticipated benign side effects. Of …

Cold For Relief Of Postoperative Limitation Of Activity Due To Incisional Pain, Haroldine Roberts

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was concerned with testing the effectiveness of cold to aid the cholecystectomy patient in performing certain selected activities usually inhibited by incisional pain.

Available references of the effects of cold on the abdominal area were studied to formulate a method of approach as no previous methodology was found in the literature.

The experimental method of research was used on a sample of 18 cholecystectomy patients meeting the criteria for the study, independent variable for the 10 patients in the experimental the application of cold over the closed incision, plastic bag covered with one thickness of towel was used …

Perception Of Patterned Vibratory Stimulation: An Evaluation Of The Tactile Vision Substitution System, Lawrence Allyn Scadden Jan 1971

Perception Of Patterned Vibratory Stimulation: An Evaluation Of The Tactile Vision Substitution System, Lawrence Allyn Scadden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Sensory substitution--The replacing of an impaired sensory channel by a properly functioning one--is possibly best manifested today in attempts to provide visual aids for the blind. The tactile vision substitution system (T.V.S.S.) is an example of one such visual aid. The system presents patterned tactile stimulation to the skin of the observer provided by the output of a closed-circuit television system. Research conducted with congenitally blind Ss in evaluation of the T.V.S.S. has provided useful information concerning the potentialities and limitations of the prototype systems, similarities and differences between tactile and visual perception, and the development of "visual" perception in …

Wildlife Hazards From 1080 Baiting, A R. Tomlinson, C. D. Gooding

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE-SHOT oat baiting with sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is a relatively safe method of trail baiting rabbits.

The hazard to wildlife is small and every effort is made to further reduce the hazard by selective application of the poison.

Prevent Worms In Cattle, G C De Chaneet Jan 1971

Prevent Worms In Cattle, G C De Chaneet

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

PARASITIC gastro enteritis, caused by roundworms, is a common cause of economic loss in calves, yearlings and occasionally cows in south-western Australia. Losses could be prevented if stock owners realised the full effects of these parasites, and understood the causes of worm infestation.
