Effects Of Unilateral Ablation Of The Optic Nerve In Feral Mus Musculus, Otha Ray Rains Jr. Jan 1974

Effects Of Unilateral Ablation Of The Optic Nerve In Feral Mus Musculus, Otha Ray Rains Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The general organization and 'function of the vertebrate visual system has been under Investigation since the late nineteenth century (Gudden, lS7Qa, Gudden, 1870b). The organization of optic tracts and subcortical optic centers for the majority of vertebrates studied are found to be similar in both structure and function (Gudden, 1870a, Gudden, 1870b, Minkowski, 1913» Minkowski, 1920, and Lashley, 193^a). The sense organ, the eye, contains specific photoreceptor cells designated as either retinal rods or retinal cones. These two types of retinal cells possess an ability to convert light quanta into nerve impulses. The nerve impulses are transmitted via the optic …

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox Jan 1974

Flowering Plants Of Omega Mine, Table Mountain, Tuolumne County, California, Mary Wilcox

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The flora of California has been studied as a whole, but with the exception of Yosemite Valley few specific areas in Tuolumne County have been investigated.

The area chosen for this investigation was approximately forty acres of the lava flow known as Table Mountain. This forty acres is located in the southeast portion of the Omega Mine near Rawhide Flat, Tuolumne County, California. The decision to use this area for study was based on its relative freedom from man's influence and its accessibility. The Omega Vine belongs to the author and its use was restricted during the period of investigation

Synthesis And Pharmacological Evaluation Of Conformationally Constrained Models Of Hydrocortisone, Shashi Om Dayal Bhatnagar Jan 1974

Synthesis And Pharmacological Evaluation Of Conformationally Constrained Models Of Hydrocortisone, Shashi Om Dayal Bhatnagar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The study of conformation in drug action can be approached from two directions, (i) that of the drug, and (ii) that of the receptor. Since the problem of elucidating the biologically active conformation of drug molecules has been extensively studied and is very well reviewed1,2, it should be equally productive to explore the conformational aspects of receptors.

Before a plausible model of conformational requirements at the receptor level can be developed, it is necessary to know something about the nature of the biologic receptors. Although structural details for specific receptors are generally unknown and a fascinating challenge for …

Metabolism Of Cadmium In Man And Animals, Parnich Tinnimit, Prasit Tummasang Jan 1974

Metabolism Of Cadmium In Man And Animals, Parnich Tinnimit, Prasit Tummasang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Cadimium (Cd) is found everywhere in the environments such as plant and animal tissues, foods, milk, atmospheric air and in the factories. A man may consume between 48-83 ug of Cd per dayfrom regular food without showing any signs of disturbances The essentiality of Cd in animal nutrition needs more research. However, it has been demonstrated that high level of Cd will cause hypertension. anemia, degeneration of ovary and testis, sterility, pulmonary necrosis and edema decrease in weight of the newborns and deformation, milk and body weight reduction in dairy cows. Cadmium toxicity is exerted through the inhibition of some …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki

Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. It has been suggested that the lowering of cholesterol levels will provide an effective means …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This two-year study consisted of a comparison of oxandrolone and growth hormone for the treatment of five children with documented growth hormone deficiency. Previously, androgens have been reported to be relatively ineffective in accelerating linear growth In growth hormone deficient children. Oxandrolone was administered for one year. Growth hormone was added in the second six months and then was given as a single agent in the third six months. Growth accelerated markedly in all patients. Only one child showed more rapid growth with the addition of growth hormone while two children actually grew more rapidly under the Influence of oxandrolone …

The Effects Of Dental Hygiene Information And Consequation On Plaque Control, Janel R. Warner Dec 1973

The Effects Of Dental Hygiene Information And Consequation On Plaque Control, Janel R. Warner

Masters Theses

The research described in the present paper is based upon a parsimonious analysis of behavior which utilizes principles that have been empirically determined. These principles as discussed by Ullmann and Krasner (1966) and Ulrich, Stachnik, and Mabry (1966) have suggested the wide applicability of behavior modification techniques, not only with animals, but with human subjects in diverse settings. One setting that has previously been left unexplored by proponents of behavior modification, which promises to be an area of growing concern, is that of dental hygiene.

The problem that the present study concerns itself with is educating children in the· correct …

The Merits And Demerits Of The Water Buffalo As Domestic Farm Livetock, Vis-A-Vis Cattle, Peerasak Charetaraprateep

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The buffalo (Bubalus bvbalis) be- longs to the bovidae family, and has been domesticated in India, Malasia, Thailand and Egypt for a long time. It occupies an important place amongst the domestic animals of the tropics as a provider of dairy produce, beef and draught power. Its greastest asset as a domestic animal is its ability to subsist on the coarsest fodder and to convert it most efficiently into animal produce. In distribution the domestic buffalo ranges widely from Italy in the west through the Balkans, Egypt and the Near East to India, Pakistan, Ceylon and Burma. The region where …

Delinquency Theories, Group Composition, Treatment Locus, And A Service-Research Model For 'Traditional' Social Work Agencies, Ronald A. Feldman, John S. Wodarski, Norman Flax, Mortimer Goodman Oct 1973

Delinquency Theories, Group Composition, Treatment Locus, And A Service-Research Model For 'Traditional' Social Work Agencies, Ronald A. Feldman, John S. Wodarski, Norman Flax, Mortimer Goodman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Summary

Rehabilitative endeavors within correctional institutions have failed because of overpopulation, high costs, labelling and stigmatization of inmates, low transferability of treatment changes to the outside community, and deviant peer group composition. Community treatment programs have fared little better because they also entail client stigmatization and typically are conducted within the context of deviant peer groups. Consequently, in order to enhance the rehabilitative potential of community treatment, subsequent efforts should be conducted within "traditional" agencies and within pro-social peer groups. The emphasis upon "pro-social" rehabilitation environments does not posit any particular assets and/or liabilities of a given socio-economic stratum, thus …

Adolescent Pregnancy And Poverty: Implications For Social Policy, Clara L. Johnson Oct 1973

Adolescent Pregnancy And Poverty: Implications For Social Policy, Clara L. Johnson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text document:

Adolescent pregnancy, per se, has been devoted little consideration by clinical observers and empirical researchers. For the most part, such pregnancies have received attention only insofar as they have occurred without the moral and legal sanctions of matrimony. This concern with illegitimacy has had the effect of blinding theorists and researchers to a whole segment of the adolescent pregnant population--the married teenager. Further, the adverse effects of adolescent pregnancy have been shrouded by moral precepts.

From existing evidence there appears to be no doubt that the married teenage girl is an integral part of the …

Localization Of Deep Abscesses With Radioactive Isotopes: An Experimental Study, H. M. Allen, R. Berguer, L. A. Dusault, M. A. Block Sep 1973

Localization Of Deep Abscesses With Radioactive Isotopes: An Experimental Study, H. M. Allen, R. Berguer, L. A. Dusault, M. A. Block

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Life-endangering effects of deep abscesses make early and precise identification and localization important to permit adequate surgical drainage. An experiment was undertaken to study the feasibility of detecting abscesses by using leucocytes tagged with radioactive isotopes. For the labeling, 51chromium appeared preferable to 131iodine or 99technetium. Leucocytes so labelled will concentrate sufficiently in abscesses to permit identification of abscesses by scintillation scanning. For clinical application, techniques require further simplification and refinement to eliminate interference by collection of radioactive isotopes in the liver and spleen.

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod Sep 1973

A Clinical Trial Of Tobramycin With Pharmacological And Microbiological Studies, Keith Burch, Richard D. Nichols, Edward L. Quinn, Frank Cox, Evelyn J. Fisher, T. Madhavan, Donald Pohlod

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tobramycin, a new aminoglycoside antibiotic, was shown to be effective in vitroagainst Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, Proteus mirabilis, indole-positive Proteus, and Eshcherichia coli. It was shown to produce serum and urine concentrations similar to gentamicin when administered intramuscularly. Preliminary animal studies showed this agent to have nephrotoxic and ototoxic effects similar to gentamicin. In our studies, tobramycin was well tolerated and produced only two transient elevations in serum creatinine and no abnormalities in audiograms and vestibular function tests. It was effective in 10 of 12 susceptible infections, including 2 of 4 with Pseudomonas endocarditis. Tobramycin compared favorably with gentamicin …
