Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt
Interplanetary Magnetic Field Sector Polarity And Neuropsychiatric Adaption: A Reanalysis, Hans W. Wendt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Recent Russian studies reported associations between adaptation syndromes and (solar activity-related) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector polarity. Certain ambiguities in the original work suggested some reanalyses, based on the graphs and data made available. Syndrome status exhibited a biphasic (semi annual) trend. It also correlated with specific geomagnetic changes during magnetic storms and possibly after sudden impulses. Moreover, lag effects and higher order interactions were noted among all parameters investigated. The restudy tends to support some of the original findings but also suggests new conclusions regarding potential relationships between geophysical/solar and psychophysiological processes.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Outpatient Management, James P. Baker
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Outpatient Management, James P. Baker
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has become one of the more common problems which face physicians both in inpatient and outpatient settings. The incidence of the disease and increase in mortality have been documented in a number of studies as have other lung diseases, indicating a general rise in pulmonary disorders over the past several decades. Two types of disease are classified under the heading of chronic pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is defined as a clinical syndrome of cough and sputum production for three consecutive months over two consecutive years, and pulmonary emphysema is defined as …

Metcalf-Hatch Campaign
The Metcalf-Hatch Act forces tax supported pounds and shelters to turn over unwanted cats and dogs to New York laboratories. This creates difficulties for shelters/pounds. People who are aware of Metcalf-Hatch (MH) will tend to abandon animals rather than risk having them recycled into labs. And this places additional tax burdens on communities for rounding up abandoned strays. The cost of stray animals is already $400 million a year in the USA.

Growth Rate Of Thoroughbreds: Effect Of Age Of Dam, Year And Month Of Birth, And Sex Of Foal, R. L. Hintz, H. F. Hintz, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Weight, height, and cannon bone measurements were obtained on 1,992 Thoroughbred foals. Colts were heavier than fillies at birth and the differences increased with age. Dams under 7 years of age and older than 11 years had foals of lighter weight at birth than mares 7 to 11 years of age and the differences persisted at 510 days of age. Foals born in April, May, or June were heavier than foals born in January, February, or March. Year of birth also influenced body weight. The trends for height at withers and cannon circumference were similar to those of body weight.
Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth
Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth
Theses
This thesis investigates the application of art therapy for the evaluation and treatment of emotionally disturbed children, with a specific focus on the use of clay and Media Dimension Variables (MDV). The author posits that clay is an exemplary medium for therapeutic intervention due to its plasticity, three-dimensional nature, and capacity to range from resistive to fluid states. The study adopts Kagan’s (1969) MDV system to structure therapeutic interventions, categorizing art activities by three distinct variables:
-
Structure: The extent of guidelines or controls (High vs. Low).
-
Media Quality: The inherent properties of the material (Resistive vs. Fluid).
-
Task Complexity …

Lyb 5 is a B-cell alloantigen which is expressed on 50-60% of B cells. It was defined originally on the basis of cytotoxicity. We have described a new reactivity within the anti-Lyb 5 serum on the basis of selective inhibition of antibody responses in vitro by this antiserum in the absence of complement. This inhibitory activity of anti-Lyb 5.1 serum appears to be due to recognition of antigenic determinants different from the prototype antigens detected in the cytotoxicity assay. Anti-Lyb 5 serum incorporated into spleen cell cultures selectively inhibits antibody responses to a class of thymus-independent antigens (TI-2) previously characterized …

Staphylococcal protein A and several different immunoglobulins have been radio-labeled to high specific activities (> 106 cpm/pg) by reductive methylation with tritiated (3H) sodium borohydride. The proteins retain excellent functional and antigenic properties. The utility of these reagents in a variety of assays for cell surface antigens is illustrated. The results indicate that this radiolabeling procedure may become the method of choice for many cell surface and solution immunoassays.

Contraceptives And Common Sense: Conventional Methods Reconsidered, Judith Bruce, S. Bruce Schearer
Reproductive Health
Since the 1960s, the solution to contraception problems has been based increasingly on complexity, not simplicity. The oral contraceptive was developed in the late 1950s using newly discovered synthetic hormones that act in intricate ways on glands in the brain. Intrauterine devices were widely introduced in the 1960s in a host of scientifically engineered configurations that act inside a woman’s uterus. Nearly half of all married couples in the United States who use some method of contraception use either the pill or IUD. In examining emerging social trends and considering the special needs of some large groups for better contraceptives—adolescents, …

Hematology As Related To Diving Characteristics Of Elaphe Obsoleta, Nerodia Erythrogaster, Nerodia Fasciata And Nerodia Rhombifera, Dennis A. Baeyens, M. W. Patterson, Chris T. Mcallister
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The diving capabilities of Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster and Nerodia fasciata confluens were investigated and the results were compared with similar studies on Nerodia rhombifera rhombifera and Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta (Baeyens et al., 1978). In addition, morphological and hematological parameters contributing to underwater survival were examined. The duration of underwater survival for N. erythrogaster and N. fasciata was approximately one hour with no difference between the species. The lung volumes of the two species were also similar but were significantly less than lung volumes reported for E. obsoleta. There were no significant differences in hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count or …
