The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.
At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …
The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate
The Acquisition Of Five Specific Morphemes By English-Speaking Preschool Children, Maxine Ulyate
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the present research was to study the acquisition of the morphemes involved in the production of the noun plural and possessive, the present progressive tense, the third person singular of the verb and the regular past tense. Research had documented that a time lapse existed between the time that a child was able to correctly inflect a common English word and when he could correctly inflect a phonetically similar nonsense item. This lapse appeared to be the time during which the child formulated an internal rule for the production of each morpheme.
The methodology involved testing sixty …

Diagnostic Comparison Between Free Speech Samples And Imitation Tasks, Tina Valcarenghi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study investigated and compared the advantages and disadvantages of a free speech sample and imitation type task in analyzing language performance in kindergarten children. An analysis of the language performance of 15 children was completed. Their language ranged in severity from normal to severely delayed. The children were divided into three distinct subgroups; severely delayed, moderately delayed and normal. The subject's scores were analyzed to determine if there was a significant difference in the reliability of these two measures and in the sensitivity in identifying presence and severity of disorder.

Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant
Dissertations and Theses
It is well established that females are more immunocompetent than males as evidenced by higher humoral antibody titers, lowered susceptibility to infection, and more efficient graft rejection.
Furthermore, females also exhibit a much higher incidence of autoimmune disease. These observations have led investigators to believe that the male hormonal environment may play a key role in the regulation of immune response. For this reason, this study is concerned with the expression of autoimmunity and of immune function in the mouse.
This study included the New Zealand Black (NZB) mouse strain, as an animal model for human SLE, as well as …

Cell Mediated Immunity By Cytotoxicity Assay And The Effect Of Corynebacterium Parvum And Radiation On Mice Bearing Herpes-Induced Tumors, Robert B. Stagg
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cell mediated immune (CMI) cytotoxic reactivity of Balb/c mice against H238 cells, a Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 2 - induced sarcoma, was measured by the 125IUdR release assay. The Balb/c mouse response to the growing HSV-induced tumor, treated with radiation and , was measured by survival rate, tumor growth and immune cytotoxicity of spleen and peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) as determined by 125IUdR release assay. Subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of 1 x 106 H238 cells (high dose) produced progressive tumor growth while s.c. inoculation of 1 x 104 H238 cells (low dose) produced no tumors. A …
The Effects Of Restraint On Hallucinatory Behavior Under Conditions Of Perceptual Deprivation, David G. Gibson
The Effects Of Restraint On Hallucinatory Behavior Under Conditions Of Perceptual Deprivation, David G. Gibson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to determine if physical restraint is a major factor in the elicitation of the hallucination phenomena associated with perceptual (or sensory) deprivation studies. Experimental subjects were exposed to three one-hour sessions of perceptual deprivation one week apart, with physical restraint being used during the second session. A group of control subjects was used to determine the effects of three unrestrained sessions of perceptual deprivation.
No significant differences were found between sessions for the experimental group in terms of number of reports or the cumulative duration of the reports. There was also no difference found …
Isolation Of Bacteriophage Resistant Lactic Culture Strains With Known Temperature Sensitivity, Luna Ying-Chung Jeng
Isolation Of Bacteriophage Resistant Lactic Culture Strains With Known Temperature Sensitivity, Luna Ying-Chung Jeng
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Seven strains of Streptococcus cremoris and Streptococcus lactis were tested for temperature sensitivity on a temperature gradient bar. A temperature of 37 C was the optimum for differentiating between temperature-sensitive and insensitive strains. Temperature-insensitive strains produced cell masses with absorbance values of 0.1 or higher and activity levels of 1.0 (expressed as a decrease in pH) or above at 37 C. Temperature-sensitive strains failed to produce these cell masses and activity levels.
Strain selection and resistant-mutant isolation made it possible to identify ten strains of Streptococci sufficiently free of phage sensitivity for use in a cheese plant rotation program. These …

A Scale For Assessing The Severity Of Diseases And Adverse Drug Reactions: Application To Drug Benefit And Risk, Ronald J. Tallarida, Rodney B. Murray, Carl Eiben
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
Physicians were interviewed to assess their willingness to risk adverse drug reactions among patients. These untoward reactions were ranked according to severity and weighted against the primary illness being treated. A specially designed questionnaire in the form of a matrix was used. Severity was divided into seven classes denoted by progressively increasing numerical scores, W1 to W7, whose values could be calculated from analysis of the completed questionnaires. The questionnaires presented several cases, in each of which an illness of specified severity was to be treated with a drug whose untoward reactions differ in severity from that …

A Study Of Some Relationships Among Repeat Abortion, Self Concept, And Contraceptive Use In Young Women, Jennifer Emery Clarke
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Approximately one-fifth of the more than one million abortions per year in the U.S. are performed on women who have already had one previous induced abortion. Repeat abortion is increasing and has been implicated as one of the major problems facing the abortion issue today. In this analytical study of 90 family planning clinic cli ents, some important findings relating to repeat abortion and ineffective contraceptive use were discovered.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship among repeat abortion, self concept, and contraceptive use, enabling those involved to better manage and counsel abortion clients.
The sample was …

In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli, Randolph H. Scott, George T. Sperl, John A. Demoss
In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli, Randolph H. Scott, George T. Sperl, John A. Demoss
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
When Escherichia coli was grown in the presence of tungstate, inactive forms of two molybdoenzymes, nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase, accumulated and were converted to their active forms upon incubation of cell suspensions with molybdate and chloramphenicol. The conversion to the active enzymes did not occur in cell extracts. When incubated with [(99)Mo]molybdate and chloramphenicol, the tungstate-grown cells incorporated (99)Mo into protein components which were released from membranes by procedures used to release nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase and which migrated with these activities on polyacrylamide gels. Although neither activity was formed during incubation of the crude extract with molybdate, …

Abstract
A 49-year-old splenectomized man had an infection from an unidentified, gram-positive, rodshaped bacterium that adhered to the majority of his peripheral-blood erythrocytes. On transmission electron microscopy, the bacterium was seen to be extraerythrocytic and was 0.2 μm wide by 1.0 to 1.7 μm long. It possessed a thick, granular cell wall, a trilamellar membrane external to the cell wall and prominent mesosomes. Attempts to cultivate the organism in vitro or to duplicate the patient's disease in splenectomized animals were unsuccessful. The patient's response suggested that the bacterium was susceptible to cell-wall-active antibiotics and to chloramphenicol but not to tetracycline. …
