Willys Silver Oral History, Willys Silver

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

Both Will Silvers and I enjoyed this interview, despite the hot, stuffy room we had at the Lab (in which the wind seemed to howl incessantly, through some pinhole crack somewhere, as is audible on tape). Initially at a loss as to what to expect in this process, Silvers soon moved into high gear and his verve and excitement are obvious. Perhaps more than anyone else included in this project, Silvers spans the constituencies ~f the Lab, as summer student, employee, summer investigator, and finally BSO member. He is forthcoming about all these roles, giving us a …

Natural And Experimental Infection With An Attaching And Effacing Strain Of Escherichia Coli In Calvest, Rodney A. Moxley, David H. Francis Aug 1986

Natural And Experimental Infection With An Attaching And Effacing Strain Of Escherichia Coli In Calvest, Rodney A. Moxley, David H. Francis

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gnotobiotic calves were inoculated with an 05:K4:H-, urease-positive strain of Escherichia coli isolated from a 2-day-old calf with diarrhea. The calves developed elevated temperatures and passed loose mucoid feces, with or without blood. The E. coli strain was negative for heat-stable and heat-labile enterotoxins but produced high levels of Shiga-like toxin. Bacteria attached diffusely to the epithelium of the large intestine and multifocally to the epithelium of the ileum. The duodenum and jejunum were not affected. At the sites of bacterial attachment, microvilli were effaced, enterocytes were degenerate, and necrosis and exfoliation had occurred. These results confirm a …

A Semiquantitative Analysis Of The Chorda Tympani Taste Pathway In The Rat Brain With The 2-Deoxyglucose Method, Charles L. Hardison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis is based on a semiquantitative analysis of four nuclear relay centers [nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), parabrachial nucleus (PBN), ventroposteromedial nucleus (VPM), gustatory neocortex (GNC)] in the chorda tympani nerve pathway. Metabolic changes were examined by the 2-deoxyglucose method in which one chorda tympani nerve was chemically stimulated and its contralateral side lesioned. Coronal sections of four taste centers were prepared for autoradiography and Nissl staining. Densities of the autoradiograms were determined by means of a video based image processor. Relative differences in the optical density ratios of the stimulated versus lesioned nuclear grey matter areas to white matter …

The Use Of Dura Mater As A Meniscus Replacement In Tmj Surgery, Kim J. Dipasquale Aug 1986

The Use Of Dura Mater As A Meniscus Replacement In Tmj Surgery, Kim J. Dipasquale

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint is recognized as a problem of significant magnitude in both medical and dental circles. The last decade has seen a steady progression in the knowledge and sophistication of not only the anatomy and physiology of the temporomandibular joint, but also in the techniques of non-surgical and surgical management of internal derangements. Surgical correction of the unrepairable disc has typically been addressed by performing a menisectomy followed by placement of a non-physiologic implant material.

The animal study reported here was performed in order to evaluate the histologic fate and biological compatibility of freeze-dried dura when …

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton Aug 1986

Effects Of Seating Arrangement On Affective Meanings And Group Interaction In Healthy Senior Citizens, Judith Ann Boughton

Masters Theses

Occupational therapists state that environmental factors (seating arrangements) influence behavior. This ex post facto study examined the effect of peripheral versus central seating arrangement on interaction (verbalizing and looking), affect, and group climate in 41 healthy senior citizens. Nine men and 32 women aged 62 to 83 participated in two collage activities (creative and imitative) in either a parallel/nonsharing group or a project/ sharing group. Seating arrangement was added to an earlier study's independent variables (creative and imitative activities, and sharing and nonsharing groups). Dependent variables consisted of three factors of affective meaning from the Osgood Semantic Differential, evaluation, power, …

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

This remarkable interview is just what one would expect from the Jackson Lab Director whose conscientious (compulsive?) attention to detail and careful planning are legendary. When I arrived (at 7:50AM), Dr. Green was ready, with his 21+ pages of notes, in outline form, on every aspect of my outline that he wished to discuss. I could tell we were going to have a long interview! In fact, we talked for most of eight hours, although only c. four of those hours are represented on the tapes. What is provided here are the recollections, drawn carefully beforehand from …

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

This three-way interview, between Tibby, Judith Swazey and me, took place in Tibby's home. In the days before this interview, I had interviewed many Jax personnel whose reminiscences had "primed" me for this meeting with one of the most colorful, distinctive and beloved old-time Jax scientists. Tibby has had a remarkable impact on Jax, both in terms of substantial science and also in a human, personal way, as a friend, mentor and colleague to many of the summer students, later to be lab scientists and administrators. Where she could have spoken at length of C.C. Little and …

Use of in-line final filters to prevent the infusion of foreign particulates has lowered the rates of postinfusion phlebitis in several controlled studies. The systemic effect of particulate infusion, however, has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, 12 mongrel dogs recovering from a right pneumonectomy were studied following infusion of various-sized particulates. Ten of the dogs were infused with either 10 or 40 million, 9 or 25 μm, latex particles. The remaining two dogs were control animals. Hemodynamic parameters were monitored in each animal. At death or 72 hours following particle injection, the left lung was examined grossly and …

An Immunochemical Analysis Of Alcoholic Hyaline And Its Relationship To Keratin Intermediate Filaments, David L. Drexler Jun 1986

An Immunochemical Analysis Of Alcoholic Hyaline And Its Relationship To Keratin Intermediate Filaments, David L. Drexler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alcoholic Hyaline (AH) and keratin intermediate filaments possess ultrastructural, biochemical and immunochemical similarities. This study compares human AH, human stratum corneum keratin (HSCK) and normal human liver cytokeratin (HCK) by quantitative immunochemical means, using polyclonal as well as monoclonal antibodies. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were employed, as well as "immunoblotting" and immunocytochemical techniques. HCK was isolated using Triton X-100 and "high-salt” buffers and exhibited seven major polypeptide bands on SDS-PAGE (41-58 kd). Antisera were made toward HCK and the two major HCK bands. Other immunochemicals included antisera toward AH, the three major AH bands, and HSCK, as well as 3 …

Prefabricated appliances were used for orthopaedic expansion of the mandibles and maintaining surgical expansion at the symphysis in the respective groups. Oxytetracycline were given intraperitoneally to mark areas of bone remodeling. Half the number of rats from each group were sacrificed at the end of …

Corticotomy Facilitated Orthodontic Treatment In Adults : A Report Of Two Cases, Randall E. Hoff Jun 1986

Corticotomy Facilitated Orthodontic Treatment In Adults : A Report Of Two Cases, Randall E. Hoff

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The corticotomy procedure is a surgical technique that has been used to facilitate orthodontic treatment for many years. Proponents of this technique contend that occlusal results are more stable and treatment time is reduced. In this study, two cases of dento-alveolar abnormality are presented that were successfully treated in a relatively short time by using the combined efforts of the surgeon and the orthodontist. Although corticotomy has limited applications, it has a place in the armamentarium of the modern orthodontist.

Key Words: Corticotomy, Adult Orthodontics, Osteotomy.

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz Jun 1986

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Continuous administration of estrogens for 7-9 months, both steroidal and nonsteroidal, to male BALB/c mice, leads to the formation of testicular Leydig cell tumors. Three days following the subcutaneous implantation of a pellet of estrogen in cholesterol, there is a peak in the incorporation of 3H-tymidine into the DNA of the interstitial cells. These effects are hypothesized to be mediated by the estrogen receptor system in the Leydig cell. Common experimental techniques for the measurement of hormone binding, such as dextran coated charcoal treatment, proved to be impossible to employ in this system, therefore a procedure was developed using …

George Snell Oral History, George D. Snell

Oral History Collection

Susan Mehrtens' Note:

George Snell's quiet voice and calm demeanor contrasted sharply with the background atmosphere of our taping session: constant interruptions from visitors, the telephone and a very solicitous spouse, and, on top of all this, a lengthy thunderstorm. George remained unperturbed, but he may have been distracted, and this may account for the anecdotal thinness of this tape. Despite his c. 40 years at Jax, Snell provides little here of the colorful vignette. He does recall his early days, living in a tent on the Lab grounds, and the locals' referring to the Lab as the "mouse house;" …

Descriptive Ethology And Activity Patterns Of Black-Footed Ferrets, Tim W. Clark, Louise Richardson, Steven C. Forrest, Denise E. Casey, Thomas M. Campbell Iii

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Aspects of the aboveground ethology and activity patterns of the black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigipes) are described for a population in northwestern Wyoming as a first step in building a descriptive ethogram and quantification of activity patterns. We observed at least 237 individual ferrets for 208 hr on 441 occasions from 2 December 1981 through 25 September 1984. Mainenance behaviors (locomotion, alert, grooming, and sunning, defecation and urination, digging, and predation) and social behavior (reproduction, ontogeny, maternal, play, agonistic) are described as well as some ferret-human interactions. Ferret vocalizations are subjectively described. We located ferrets during most months including …
