Background/aim: This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of lutein/zeaxanthin isomers (L/Zi) on lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, NF-ΚB/Nrf2 pathways, and synaptic plasticity proteins in trained rats. Materials and methods: Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: 1) control, 2) L/Zi: rats received L/Zi at the dose of 100 mg/kg by oral gavage, 3) exercise, 4) exercise+L/Zi: rats exercised and received L/Zi (100 mg/kg) by oral gavage. The duration of the study was eight weeks. Results: Exercise combined with L/Zi reduced lipid peroxidation and improved antioxidant enzyme activities of muscle and cerebral cortex in rats (p < 0.001). In the Exercise + L/Zi group, muscle and cerebral cortex Nrf2 and HO-1 levels increased, while NF-ΚB levels decreased (p

Background/aim: The criteria for surgical management of ureteropelvic junction obstruction are not well-defined, and there is a risk for loss of renal function before the operation. In this context, certain changes in contralateral kidney had been investigated in order to increase the sensitivity of diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether contralateral transient minimal hydronephrosis (CTMH) can be considered as an "early alarm" sign for worsening of the affected kidney in infants with hydronephrosis. Materials and methods: A total of 182 infants (92 surgically treated and 90 conservatively followed-up) with unilateral hydronephrosis were retrospectively analyzed. Ultrasonography and renal …

Background/aim: C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) is predictive marker of systemic inflammatory state in atherosclerotic coronary diseases when compared to predictive value of these two markers separately. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between CAR and the coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, Coronary Artery Disease-Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) score in patients' unknown diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent coronary CTA (Computed Tomography Angiography) and were classified by CAD-RADS scores. Materials and methods: A total of 187 patients consecutively referred for the evaluation of their chest pain underwent coronary CTA were included retrospectively. Results: CRP, CAR, and …

Background/aim: Bevacizumab is a chemotherapeutic drug, which selectively binds to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and mainly inhibits angiogenesis and neovascularization. We aimed to study the possible effects of bevacizumab on right ventricular pressure (RVP), right ventricular hypertrophy, and VEGF, in hypoxia - induced pulmonary hypertension (PH) rat model. Materials and methods: 24 adult Wistar Albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group - saline; Bevacizumab Group; PH Group; PH + Bevacizumab Group. In hypoxia - induced model, 10% oxygen and 90% nitrogen were applied in a plexiglas box for eight days to PH Group and PH + …

Background/aim: Hyperparathyroidism is an endocrine disorder characterized by hypercalcemia. Because of calcium?s effects on parathyroid glands, bone, intestines, and kidneys, it has an important place in homeostasis. The results of studies regarding hyperparathyroidism hemostasis are conflicting. Thromboelastography helps to evaluate all steps of hemostatic system. Our aim in this study was to investigate the possible role of hemostatic mechanisms in the development of thrombosis in hyperparathyroid patients with the modified rotation thromboelastogram (ROTEM). Materials and methods: Twenty-two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and 20 healthy controls were involved. This study was conducted in Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine, Endocrinology …

Background/aim: While several different scoring systems aim to determine the clinical outcomes for patients with pneumonia, there is limited emphasis on the platelet count. This study investigated the relationships between thrombocyte count and 30-day mortality and complicated clinical course of patients with pneumonia. Materials and methods: This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled patients over 18 years old with a diagnosis of pneumonia in the emergency department for six months. The primary outcome was to establish the relationship between platelet count, mortality, complicated clinical course, and initial vital parameters on admission. The secondary outcome was comparing the platelet count with mortality and …

Background/aim: Currently, the elderly population in the world is rapidly increasing due to technological developments and convenient access to health services. Due to comorbidities in elderly patients, hip fractures are frequently observed after exposure to environmental trauma. To reduce pain during positioning in spinal anesthesia, fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) can be applied easily and reliably. In our study, we aimed to compare the analgesic effects and duration of fascia iliaca compartment blocks performed with USG guidance or the landmark approach methods for relieving spinal anesthesia position pain. Materials and methods: Our study included 100 patients undergoing operations due to …
