Global Health Emergencies During The Pandemic And Their Solutions, İrfan Şencan, Di̇lek Bulut, İsmai̇l Hakki Şencan, Canan Ağalar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

In this review, we evaluated health care problems, which were not common before pandemic outbreak but have been common issues after its appereance and approaches to control pandemic considering its influences on people. We revised current health care developing approaches under the light of experience obtained throughout the pandemic so far. The aim is to be prepared in advance for possible upcoming pandemics. As in Covid 19 pandemics, such long lasting and widely affecting situations, durability is also very important together with flexibility and quickness. To provide durability, we need global policies taking the health to its center as well …

Cerebral Hemodynamic Alterations In Patients With Covid-19, Ali̇ Riza Sonkaya, Bi̇lgi̇n Öztürk, Ömer Karadaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Coronavirus 2019 disease (Covid-19) was first seen in December 2019 and afterwards it became pandemic. Several systemic involvements have been reported in Covid-19 patients. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the cerebrovascular hemodynamics in patients with Covid-19. Materials and methods: The sample of this study included 20 patients hospitalized in our clinic diagnosed with Covid-19 via PCR modality and 20 healthy volunteers of similar age and sex. Bilateral middle cerebral arteries were investigated with transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. Basal cerebral blood flow velocities and vasomotor reactivity rates were determined and statistically compared. Results: When patient and control groups …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Hospital-acquired acute kidney injury (HA-AKI) may commonly develop in Covid-19 patients and is expected to have higher mortality. There is little comparative data investigating the effect of HA-AKI on mortality of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and a control group of general population suffering from Covid-19. Materials and methods: HA-AKI development was assessed in a group of stage 3-5 CKD patients and control group without CKD among adult patients hospitalized for Covid-19. The role of AKI development on the outcome (in-hospital mortality and admission to the intensive care unit [ICU]) of patients with and without CKD was compared. Results: …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: It is very important for the efficient use of limited capacity and the success of treatment to predict patients who may need ICU with high mortality rate in the Covid-19 outbreak. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the value of the radiological involvement on initial CT in demonstrating the ICU transfer and mortality rate of patients. Materials and methods: All PCR-positive patients were included in the study, whose CT, PCR, and laboratory values were obtained simultaneously at the time of first admission. Patients were divided into 4 groups in terms of the extent of radiological lesions. These …

Background and aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the long-term (≥4 weeks) use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is a risk factor for intubation requirement and mortality in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Materials and methods: In this multicentric retrospective study, a total of 382 adult patients (≥18 years of age) with confirmed COVID-19 who were hospitalized for treatment were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups according to the periods during which they used PPIs: the first group included patients who were not on PPI treatment, and the second group included those who have used …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Biochemical markers are needed to show lung involvement in COVID-19 disease. Galectin-3 is known to play a key role in the inflammation and fibrosis process. We aimed to evaluate the predictive role of galectin-3 levels for pneumonia in patients with COVID-19. Materials and methods: Total of 176 patients with COVID-19, confirmed with reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, admitted to the Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital was analyzed. The study was designed as a cross sectional. The baseline data of laboratory examinations, including galectin-3 were collected at the time of diagnosis. CT images evaluated by a single radiologist according …
