This article covers the fundamental principles and practice of NMR hyperpolarization techniques, which are proving useful for in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies of metabolism in animal models, and clinical trials with hyper-enhanced sensitivity. Fundamentally, hyperpolarization methods enhance nuclear spin polarization by orders-of-magnitude, resulting in concomitant improvement in NMR detection sensitivity. The hyperpolarization methods described here – dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), para-hydrogen induced polarization (PHIP), signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE), and spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) – are capable of achieving nuclear spin polarization approaching the theoretical maximum of unity on nuclear spin sites of molecular or atomic agents …

Nimh Research Domain Criteria (Rdoc), Charles A. Sanislow, Kevin J. Quinn, Isaiah Sypher

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project is a framework for studying domains of biological and behavioral function that cut across traditional psychiatric diagnostic boundaries with the long-term objective of creating a new nosology based on specific biobehavioral measures. The initial aim is to provide a framework to drive clinical research. One goal of RDoC is to facilitate the development of biomarkers that could eventually be used for practical clinical diagnostic purposes and allow the development of new treatments targeting specific mechanisms of mental illness. In this entry, RDoC, its development, and the ways that it may evolve are described.

Combining Resources, Combining Forces: Regionalizing Hospital Library Services In A Large Statewide Health System, Heather J. Martin, Basia Delawska-Elliott Dec 2014

Combining Resources, Combining Forces: Regionalizing Hospital Library Services In A Large Statewide Health System, Heather J. Martin, Basia Delawska-Elliott

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

After a reduction in full-time equivalents, 2 libraries in large teaching hospitals and 2 libraries in small community hospitals in a western US statewide health system saw opportunity for expansion through a regional reorganization. Despite a loss of 2/3 of the professional staff and a budgetary decrease of 27% over the previous 3 years, the libraries were able to grow business, usage, awareness, and collections through organizational innovation and improved efficiency. This paper describes the experience—including process, challenges, and lessons learned—of an organizational shift to regionalized services, collections, and staffing. Insights from this process may help similar organizations going through …

Quantile Rank Maps: A New Tool For Understanding Individual Brain Development, Huaihou Chen, Clare Kelly, F. Xavier Castellanos, Ye He, Xi-Nian Zuo, Philip T. Reiss Dec 2014

Quantile Rank Maps: A New Tool For Understanding Individual Brain Development, Huaihou Chen, Clare Kelly, F. Xavier Castellanos, Ye He, Xi-Nian Zuo, Philip T. Reiss

Philip T. Reiss

We propose a novel method for neurodevelopmental brain mapping that displays how an individual’s values for a quantity of interest compare with age-specific norms. By estimating smoothly age-varying distributions at a set of brain regions of interest, we derive age-dependent region-wise quantile ranks for a given individual, which can be presented in the form of a brain map. Such quantile rank maps could potentially be used for clinical screening. Bootstrap-based confidence intervals are proposed for the quantile rank estimates. We also propose a recalibrated Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for detecting group differences in the age-varying distribution. This test is shown to be …

Cross-Validation And Hypothesis Testing In Neuroimaging: An Irenic Comment On The Exchange Between Friston And Lindquist Et Al., Philip T. Reiss Dec 2014

Cross-Validation And Hypothesis Testing In Neuroimaging: An Irenic Comment On The Exchange Between Friston And Lindquist Et Al., Philip T. Reiss

Philip T. Reiss

The “ten ironic rules for statistical reviewers” presented by Friston (2012) prompted a rebuttal by Lindquist et al. (2013), which was followed by a rejoinder by Friston (2013). A key issue left unresolved in this discussion is the use of cross-validation to test the significance of predictive analyses. This note discusses the role that cross-validation-based and related hypothesis tests have come to play in modern data analyses, in neuroimaging and other fields. It is shown that such tests need not be suboptimal and can fill otherwise-unmet inferential needs.

Creating Healthy Community In The Postindustrial City, Brian A. Hoey Dec 2014

Creating Healthy Community In The Postindustrial City, Brian A. Hoey

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

This chapter explores how community might be reimagined for the benefit of public health as well as to promote incipient social or economic agendas born of progressive citizen action aimed at what is commonly characterized as development or, perhaps, even more broadly as “growth.” Can a city like Huntington, West Virginia, emerge as a positive example of what we might term postindustrial urban regeneration and perhaps even community healing? Can this happen specifically through a grassroots movement now finding local governmental support in a collective attempt to transform this place from one defined primarily by the productive capacity of factories …

Capitalizing On Distinctiveness: Creating Wv For A New Economy, Brian A. Hoey Dec 2014

Capitalizing On Distinctiveness: Creating Wv For A New Economy, Brian A. Hoey

Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.

This article explores use of images and ideas of place to promote particular social and economic agendas within the regional context of Appalachia. Despite prevailing imageries of backwardness and isolation that adhere to the region, as well as recent history of often-bleak economic conditions, communities such as Huntington, West Virginia, are ideal places to observe inventive forms of community-building, place-making, and place-marketing that borrow from emerging cultural and economic models and stand in sharp contrast to a once dominant paradigm that encouraged capital investment by relying simply on tax breaks and the provision of cheap land and labor to attract …

Nuevas Reglas Para La Utilización De Las Menciones “Muy Bajo En Gluten” Y “Sin Gluten” En El Etiquetado Y La Publicidad De Los Alimentos, Luis González Vaqué Dec 2014

Nuevas Reglas Para La Utilización De Las Menciones “Muy Bajo En Gluten” Y “Sin Gluten” En El Etiquetado Y La Publicidad De Los Alimentos, Luis González Vaqué

There is no doubt that Commission Implementing Regulation No 828/2014 regulates a very …

European Food (Mis)Information To Consumers: Do Safety Risks Lie Just Around The Corner?, Luis González Vaqué, Corrado Finardi

Luis González Vaqué

Regulation 1169/20111 of the European Parliament and the Council is hardly new, yet debate around it continues to gain momentum in academic literature and the food business community, including in the latter case on new media and social networks. This appears to be due not just to the intrinsic relevance of the law but also to its delayed introduction, along with pending uncertainties and the need for further disambiguation. It has already required two separate clarifications from the EC services, in the form of “Questions andAnswers” documents - the second due to be published at the time of writing.

What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd)?, Julie Elaine N. Irish

Julie Elaine Irish

For readers who may not be familiar with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) this brief guide outlines some of the major points: • The World Health Organization estimates that 1:160 children worldwide are affected by ASD but admit that data collection methods are inconsistent so this figure may be inaccurate. • The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), a US government department, has carried out more detailed data collection over several years and currently estimates that the number of children diagnosed with ASD in the United States is 1:68.

Epidemiology Of Latency And Relapse In Plasmodium Vivax Malaria, Andrew A. Lover Dec 2014

Epidemiology Of Latency And Relapse In Plasmodium Vivax Malaria, Andrew A. Lover

Andrew Lover

Malaria is a major contributor to health burdens throughout the regions where it is endemic. Historically, it was believed that there was limited morbidity and essentially no mortality associated with Plasmodium vivax; however, evidence from diverse settings now suggests that infections with P. vivax can be both severe and fatal. This awareness has highlighted a critical gap: the vast majority of research has been directed towards P. falciparum, leading to a decades-long neglect of epidemiological and clinical studies of P. vivax. There exists a large body of historical data on human experimental infections with P. vivax; these studies in controlled …

Considerations For Comprehensive Analyses Of Sporozoite-Based Controlled Human Malaria Infection Studies, Andrew A. Lover Dec 2014

Considerations For Comprehensive Analyses Of Sporozoite-Based Controlled Human Malaria Infection Studies, Andrew A. Lover

Andrew Lover

There has been renewed interest in the use of sporozoite-based approaches for controlled human malaria infections (CHMIs), and several sets of human challenge studies have recently completed. A study undertaken in Tanzania and published in 2014 found dose dependence between 10,000 and 25,000 sporozoite doses, as well as divergent times-to-parasitemia relative to earlier studies in European volunteers, with important implications for planning future studies. Analysis of time-to-event data has had extensive development in recent years, but these methods have had limited exposure outside biostatistics. Expansion of the published analyses to include recent methodological approaches optimized for the types of data …

Short Report: Study Variability In Recent Human Challenge Experiments With Plasmodium Falciparum Sporozoites (Pfspz Challenge), Andrew A. Lover

Andrew Lover

There has been renewed interest in the use of sporozoite-based approaches for malaria vaccination and controlled human infections, and several sets of human challenge studies have recently completed. A study undertaken in Tanzania and published in 2014 found dose-dependence between 10,000 and 25,000 sporozoite doses, as well as divergent times-to-parasitemia relative to earlier studies in European volunteers. However, this analysis shows that these conclusions are based upon suboptimal analytical methods; with more optimal analysis, there is no evidence for dose-dependence within this dose range; and more importantly, no evidence for differences in event times between Dutch and Tanzanian study sites. …
