Dr. Don V. Hatton was a physician and public health specialist in both West Virginia and Kentucky beginning in the 1930s. During his interview, Dr. Hatton discusses Appalachia and focuses on the definition of the region and what it means to be Appalachian. He also discusses his transition from being a public health specialist focused on preventative medicine to a practicing internal medicine physician. In the audio clip provided, he compares and contrasts his public health work in West Virginia and Kentucky through a focus on physical environment, education, and socioeconomic status. Complications Of Treated Cushing's Syndrome, Lewis B. Morrow, Raymond C. Mellinger, M. Saeed Zafar, Richmond W. Smith Jr.

Fifty-two patients with Cushing's syndrome are reported with emphasis on post treatment complications. Seven patients, cured of their disease following appropriate therapy, had a recurrence of adrenal hypersecretion from one to ten years later. This occurred after all modalities of treatment, but was more common after sub-total adrenalectomy. Pituitary adenomas were found in two cases. Pseudotumor cerebri, psychiatnc complications, hyperthyroidism and hyperpigmentation were observed. One patient developed progressive hyperplgmentation despite pituitary radiation. Thirteen of fifty-two patients had malignant disease including three endometrial carcinomas, one rectal carcinoma and one adenocarcinoma of the mandible. Toxic Megacolon In Granulomatous Colitis, K. Anselm, S. A. Rosenblum, V. De Marco

Acute, toxic dilatation of the colon in granulomatous colitis occurs more frequently than heretofore reported, and is a more serious complication than its counterpart in ulcerative colitis. Twenty-six patients who had toxic megacolon were seen at the Henry Ford Hospital between 1961 and 1971. Fourteen of these had ulcerative colitis and 12 had granulomatous colitis. Coricosteroids were relatively ineffective in these 12 patients and all but two needed surgical intervention. Postoperative complications occurred in two cases, with two deaths. The Henry Ford Hospital with its research partner, The Edsel B. Ford Institute for Medical Research, was the first private medical center in the State of Michigan to purchase a scanning electron microscope and to begin to apply it, a year ago, to the study of medical and biological problems in both the animal and the human. This article briefly describes how the instrument works and shows some samples of micrographs produced.

The Involvement Of Urinary Kallikrein In The Renal Escape From The Sodium Retaining Effect Of Mineralocorticoids, M. Marin-Grez, N. B. Oza, Oscar A. Carretero

It is well known that the normal kidney "escapes" the sodium retaining effect of mineralocorticoids. However, the mechanism that mediates this "escape" is not understood. The possible role of kallikrein in this "escape" phenomenon was investigated by placing seven dogs in metabolic cages and giving them a constant sodium diet. After they had been on this diet three days, urine was collected for two 24-hour periods. DOCA (25 mg/day) was then given intramuscularly for five days. Urine was collected daily during this DOCA period and for two additional 24- hour periods. Urine volume, sodium, potassium, protein, and kallikrein excretion were …

Surgical orthodontics presents a challenge to the oral surgeon. By the nature of the oral surgeon's training and discipline he should be the one best qualified to treat the surgical aspect of the surgical orthodontic case. The establishment of a proper diagnosis and means of communication between the oral surgeon and orthodontist are essential in achieving a good final result for the surgically treated case. Fortunately, a scientific method of diagnosis is available that can provide both specialties with a common language. Computerized cephalometric analysis can provide the diagnosis and link of communication for the discussion of goals and treatment. …

Mandibular movement is considered to be a fundamental factor in the study, analysis, and treatment of occlusion. For many years, dentists have realized that dental health depends upon the compatibility of mandibular movements and occlusion. This realization has led to the development of new methods and techniques for recording accurately and scientifically the movements of the mandible. In order for this data to be of scientific value, it must be stored in a usable form which is easily available for analysis.

Role Of Membrane-Associated Components Of Mycoplasma Arthritidis On The Biosynthesis Of Humoral Antibodies And Arthritogenic Properties In Experimental Animals, Lois M. Bergquist

The virulence of animal-passaged Mycoplasma arthritidis (158) was demonstrated to be enhanced in rats by growth in oleic acid-enriched broth. The virulence of a laboratory-maintained culture of the same strain was unaffected by similar growth conditions. No differences either in the immune response as measured by complement-fixing (CF) antibodies or in the histogenesis of the disease were detected when rats were injected with animal-passaged M. arthritidis grown either in the presence or in the absence of oleic acid. All tests for metabolism-inhibiting (MI) antibodies in the rat were negative.

The Effect Of Psyllium Hydrocolloid And Cholestyramine On Hepatic Bile Lipid Composition In Man, W. T. Beher, B. M. Schuman, M. A. Block, G. J. Lin, K. K. Casazza

The effects of a mucoid - psyllium hydrocolloid - and an anion exchange polymercholestryamine - on the total cholesterol, total phospholipid, total bile salt, cholate, chenodeoxycholate, and deoxycholate concentrations of hepatic bile were determined in six post-cholecystectomy patients. Bile was obtained by drainage through an indwelling T-tube, which was clamped except during bile collection. Psyllium hydrocolloid treatment (12 gm/day) for 6 to 29 days had little or no effect on the cholesterol or phospholipid concentration of hepatic bile, but increased the total bile salt pool by gradually increasing the concentration of deoxycholate. Purpura Arthralgia Weakness Mixed Cryoglobulinemia Syndrome Treated With Splenectomy: A Case Report, Carl R. Haeger

Weakness purpura mixed arthralgia cryoglobinemia (IgG - IgM) syndrome was first described by Meltzer in 1966. Such a case was recently reported after treatment with Cyclophosphamide and subsequent splenectomy for pancytopenia with beneficial effects on the cryocrit. The patient reported here underwent splenectomy without Cyclophosphamide and had subsequent amelioration of the clinical symptoms. Abnormal plasma cells found in the spleen presumably were responsible (at least in part) for the patient's symptomatology.

Malignant Histiocytosis Of The Robb-Smith Type (Histiocytic Medullary Reticulosis), Michael F. Macken, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Sheik M. Saeed

A 60-year-old woman developed high fever, jaundice, anemia with pancytopenia and hepatosplenomegaly. She deteriorated rapidly and died one month later, having shown no beneficial effect from high dose corticosteroids and splenectomy. An antemortem diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis of the Robb-Smith type was made and duly confirmed by autopsy study. This rare disorder of the reticuloendothelial system, heretofore designated "histiocytic medullary reticulosis," deserves recognition and inclusion among the histiocytic diseases and in the classification of the lymphomas. Its proper nosologic designation is suggested.

A miniaturized procedure using a modified microtiter plate is described for the isolation of cell wall deficient organisms. It is particularly useful when the volume of a liquid specimen is very small.

Kinesiology Of Knee Flexion Deformity Using Electromyography, Paul J. Roby

A kinesiological electromyographic study was completed to determine the relative changes in muscle activity as a person walks and stands with different degrees of knee flexion deformity. The ultimate aim was to establish criteria for appropriate preventive and corrective measures relating to knee flexion deformity.

Six different muscles were implanted with wire electrodes. The subjects performed a series of walking and standing experiments with the knee flexed at selected angles by a locking leg brace to simulate knee flexion deformity. The electromyographic action potentials were monitored by analog tapes, oscilloscopes and closed circuit television. The analog tapes were displayed on …
