Congenital absence of platelet glycoproteins IIb and IIIa (GPIIb and GPIIIa) results in a severe bleeding disorder characterized by defective platelet aggregation and failure of fibrinogen to bind to platelets. GPIIb is a two-chain protein containing disulfide-linked alpha and beta subunits. GPIIb and GPIIIa are present as a heterodimeric, noncovalent complex in the platelet plasma membrane and function as the fibrinogen receptor. To characterize synthesis of these two proteins, RNA isolated from a human leukemia cell line that contains GPIIb and GPIIIa was translated in a wheat germ cell-free system. This invention relates to cisplatin type fluorescently labeled compounds. In particular, the compounds are bis (5-aminofluorescein)-dichloroplatinum (II) or certain substituted analogues thereof. The compounds are useful as radiation sensitivity enhancers and as fluorescent biological tracers. The invention also relates to a unique, single step synthesis for preparing said compounds.

At age 17 two motor signs, mirror movements and dysdiadochokinesis, were found in more than half the subjects known to have had the respective signs at age 7. These rates were significantly higher than rates found within the group of subjects who were sign free at age 7.

Few Western Australian ewe flocks are diagnosed for pregnancy despite the precence of high numbers of barren ewes. Surveys of farm flocks in the early 1970s recorded that between 14 and 29 per cent of ewes failed to lamb each year.

Techniques for diagnosing pregnant ewes have been available for many years, but ultrasonic devices and computer technology have made it possible for skilled operators to determine whether ewes are pregnant and more importantly, whether they have one, two or more foetuses.

Once the number of pregnant ewes is known farmers can use labour more efficiently. They can minimise the …

The effects of quinidine on steady state serum and tissue digoxin concentrations in the neonatal dog were studied. To determine the effects of quinidine on serum digoxin concentrations, two groups of neonates were evaluated: Group I (n = 11) was digitalized with 40 μg/kg body weight, intramuscularly, and placed on a 10 μg/kg per day maintenance dose; Group II (n = 7) was digitalized with 50 μg/kg per day, intraperitoneally, and placed on a 20 μg/kg per day maintenance dose. After 10 days of digoxin alone, quinidine was coadministered (30 mg/kg per day, intraperitoneally) for 7 days. Serum digoxin concentrations …

To assess 'soft-sign' persistence and its correlates outside a referred sample, 159 members of a local birth cohort of the United National Collaborative Perinatal Project were traced and their performance on six neurological test scales was measured at age 17 by examiners blind to their status at age seven. A comparison group was also formed, who had been 'sign-free' at age seven. On four of the six tests (dysdiadochokinesis, mirror movements, dysgraphesthesia and motor slowness) index boys did significantly worse than the comparison boys; by contrast, index girls scored significantly worse than comparisons only on motor slowness.

Improvements in intraocular lens implants during the past ten years have revolutionized cataract surgery. Both anterior and posterior chamber lenses are currently in wide use, but the optical superiority of the posterior chamber location has yet to be demonstrated. To do so, a more detailed analysis is required of visual function than is clinically routine. Also required is appreciation that the retina is an integral part of the eye's optical system because of its directional characteristics, which are known as the Stiles-Crawford effect. The admission nutrition status of 135 consecutive general medical patients admitted to a single nursing unit was evaluated using a simple questionnaire and available laboratory studies. A statistical analysis of the data obtained indicates that prolonged length of stay may be related to admission nutritional status.

Five cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in one family have been studied, and a review of the history and features of the syndrome are presented. This syndrome was detected in four of six siblings and in the father. Three family members underwent surgery after small-bowel obstruction was diagnosed. A gastric polyp was removed from a fourth family member. Rectal bleeding dominated the clinical picture in two patients. Colonic polyps were also found in the three patients who had small-bowel polyps. One of the four affected siblings had mucocutaneous pigmentation, but no evidence of intestinal polyps was detected. Orbital metastasis is associated with enophthalmos in up to one third of all cases. After analyzing the clinical and pathologic features In 25 reported cases of enophthalmic orbital metastasis, the condition was found to almost exclusively affect females, usually in the 60 to 70 age group. The right orbit was the most commonly affected. The primary lesion was located in the breast in 19 (76%) cases and in the abdomen in 6 (24%) cases. In one third of the cases, the manifestations of the orbital metastasis were recognized before diagnosing the primary lesion. The most common presenting features were diplopia …

Although lead encephalopathy is rare, lead intoxication continues to be a significant problem in Detroit. Neuropsychological effects may occur even at low levels of lead. Since treatment of lead poisoning consists of a painful series of injections, it is imperative that more attention be given to the prevention of this disease. To confirm the magnitude of the problems, our experience with lead poisoning during a three-year period at Henry Ford Hospital's Pediatric Department is reviewed.

The pathologic diagnosis was supported or confirmed in three out of four cases that had an adequate cytologic specimen. The results demonstrate that adjunctive immunocytologic techniques can be used in combination with fine-needle aspiration for a variety of orbital tumors. A rare case of total hereditary sclerocornea is presented along with clinical history, histopathology, and a review of the possible pathogenesis and current literature on the subject. It is quite possible that imperfect cleavage of the anterior chamber angle may be the predisposing factor in scleralization of the cornea due to a failure of neural crest cell differentiation. If surgical intervention to correct for the corneal opacification is indicated, corneal transplantation should be performed as soon as possible after birth, similar to the indications for removal of dense congenital cataracts to avoid deprivation amblyopia.

The Pseudo-Leukocyte-Specific/Nuclear Membrane Antinuclear Antibody Pattern: A Puzzle, Thomas K. Burnham

We report an antinuclear antibody (ANA) pattern—the pseudo-leukocyte-specific/nuclear membrane (PLS/NM) ANA pattern—that is puzzling because it usually reacts with only a few cells on human spleen imprints but with most epidermal and numerous dermal nuclei of normal human skin sections. The designation "pseudo-leukocyte-specific" was chosen because it is generally seen in only a few nuclei on human spleen imprints, thereby resembling the true leukocyte-specific ANA pattern. A few small round nuclei fluoresce homogeneously, surrounded by a bright wall, suggesting nuclear membrane (NM) fluorescence. The term "nuclear membrane" was added to the name because the NM appearance is even more prominent …
