Psychology Faculty Publications

Purpose

Maternal adverse experiences, such as maltreatment in childhood and later intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy, can disrupt the mother-child relationship and influence maternal perceptions of infant temperament. The present study explored how these adversities influence mothers’ views of their infants’ temperaments and examined the role of maternal emotion regulation and responsiveness to their infants as mediators of these relationships.

Methods

Using data from a longitudinal study of highly stressed, vulnerable women, 355 mothers retrospectively reported on their own childhood maltreatment, as well as their experiences of IPV and emotion regulation during pregnancy. Maternal responsiveness was coded using mother-infant …

Modern Potentiostat Architectures For Electrochemical Sensing: Design, Integration, And Future Directions, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter Jan 2026

Modern Potentiostat Architectures For Electrochemical Sensing: Design, Integration, And Future Directions, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter

Center for Bioelectronics Publications

Potentiostats are essential to electrochemical sensing, enabling precise control of electrode potentials and measurement of current responses. As demand grows for portable, wearable, and point-of-care systems, potentiostat design has evolved from benchtop instruments to compact, low-power, and wirelessly connected platforms. This review provides a comprehensive, system-level perspective on modern potentiostat architectures, covering operational principles, analog front-end design, signal generation and acquisition, communication protocols, and software integration. Unlike prior reviews that treat these aspects independently, this work integrates electrochemical theory with electronic design and data communication frameworks. Key components, including operational amplifiers, transimpedance amplifiers, DAC/ADC subsystems, and microcontroller-based control, are examined …

No standardized, comprehensive approach for radiological image interpretation exists among medical schools in the United States of America. In order to rectify this, we outline a model aimed to help improve how medical imaging can be taught in medical schools. The VOID (Visualization, Orientation/Observation, Identification, Description) guide is a proposed universal, stepwise approach to medical image identification, interpretation, and communication. This structured guideline is aimed at building a foundation for students in early medical education. The VOID was applied to CT (Computed Tomography), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), and x-ray modalities as integrated sessions for medical students during human anatomy laboratory. …

Mechanism-Driven Therapy For Diabetic Cardiovascular Disease, Fabian Sanchis-Gomar, Carl J. Lavie, Salvatore Carbone, Ian J. Neeland Jan 2026

Mechanism-Driven Therapy For Diabetic Cardiovascular Disease, Fabian Sanchis-Gomar, Carl J. Lavie, Salvatore Carbone, Ian J. Neeland

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications

[Introduction] Diabetic cardiovascular disease is a network disorder, not a glucose-only complication

Diabetes accelerates cardiovascular (CV) target-organ damage through multiple interacting biological modules that amplify risk even when glycemia is modestly controlled[1]. These modules include (i) adipose tissue dysfunction with altered adipokine secretion and immune-cell infiltration; (ii) ectopic lipid deposition in liver, myocardium, and perivascular/epicardial fat (iii) endothelial dysfunction with impaired nitric oxide bioavailability and heightened oxidative stress (iv) chronic kidney disease (CKD)-mediated volume, pressure, and uremic-toxin stress, and (v) autonomic and neurohormonal activation that promotes hypertension, arrhythmias, and remodeling[1]. The clinical spectrum includes macrovascular disease …

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications

Background:

Efficient turnover time (TOT) and adherence to first-start time (FST) in operating and angiography suites are critical for optimizing workflow, reducing costs, and maximizing patient satisfaction. Hospitals face challenges in maintaining these metrics due to operational constraints and unexpected emergent cases. Our goal was to compare TOT, FST, and total admission time for elective cases performed in angiography suites at an ambulatory neurosurgery center (ANSC) versus a tertiary hospital (TH).

Methods:

We conducted a retrospective analysis of data for patients who underwent elective diagnostic or interventional neuroendovascular procedures at the TH or ANSC from January 2024 through October 2024. …

Automation And Autonomy In The Ivf Laboratory: Concepts And Implications For Embryologists, Jacques Cohen, Gerardo Mendizabal-Ruiz, Giles Anthony Palmer, Giuseppe Silvestri, Mina Alikani Jan 2026

Automation And Autonomy In The Ivf Laboratory: Concepts And Implications For Embryologists, Jacques Cohen, Gerardo Mendizabal-Ruiz, Giles Anthony Palmer, Giuseppe Silvestri, Mina Alikani

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications

Automation is regarded as the next phase in the evolution of laboratory IVF. Despite technological advances, most laboratory procedures remain operator-dependent, contributing to variability in performance and outcomes. While automation has improved reproducibility and efficiency in many areas of medicine, its adoption in IVF has been slow. This review examines how automation may be integrated into IVF laboratories through a set of conceptual distinctions. Automation refers to the execution of procedural steps by machine-controlled systems, whereas autonomy describes the degree to which such systems can operate without human intervention. This review distinguishes between static automation, which maintains or monitors the …

A Low-Cost Fourier-Based Dual-Pump Mock Circulatory Loop For Arterial Pressure Waveform Reproduction, Victor K. Tsui, Kouhyar Tavakolian, Daniel Ewert Jan 2026

A Low-Cost Fourier-Based Dual-Pump Mock Circulatory Loop For Arterial Pressure Waveform Reproduction, Victor K. Tsui, Kouhyar Tavakolian, Daniel Ewert

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Cardiovascular diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide, creating a need for reliable hemodynamic testing platforms for cardiovascular device evaluation and therapeutic development. Mock circulatory loops (MCLs) provide effective in vitro platforms for reproducing physiological and pathological pressure conditions; however, many existing systems remain limited in programmability, waveform fidelity, standardization, and affordability. This study presents a cost-effective dual-pump hybrid MCL (hMCL) that independently regulates baseline and pulsatile pressure components using Fourier-based harmonic synthesis. Reference arterial pressure waveforms were decomposed into harmonic components, and their amplitudes, frequencies, and phase shifts were converted into pulse-width-modulation signals for dual-pump actuation. Validation …

Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli Jan 2026

Advancing Cns Tumor Management: Novel Modalities In Surgery, Radiation, And Chemotherapy, Armin David Tavakkoli

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Most tumors affecting the brain and spine are managed through a combination of surgical resection, radiation, and chemotherapy; however, operative morbidity from invasive surgery, the narrow therapeutic window of conventional radiotherapy, and poor blood-brain barrier penetration of systemic agents are critical barriers that hinder long term tumor control. This thesis presents three complementary strategies to advance brain and spine tumor therapy. First, we investigate laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in the treatment of spinal tumors with metastatic epidural spinal cord compression, replacing “separation surgery” with a minimally invasive, image-guided approach that maximizes tumor ablation while preserving neurologic function. Second, we …
