Gastrocolic And Duodenocolic Fistulas: An Experimental Study, Joseph L. Ponka, A. Karim Shaalan, P. C. Pesaros
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In an experimental study of gastrocolic and duodenocolic fistulas, it was clearly seen in 10 animals that duodenocolic fistulas result in the most serious loss of nutrition. Death from starvation occurred in all 42 animals in 30 days. Gastrocolic fistulas similarly resulted in weight loss and death of the animals in an average of 42 days. Lengthy fistulas between the stomach and colon caused no obvious disturbances in the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. The significant microscopic changes included destruction of the mucous membrane and a decrease in size of the villi. The other noteworthy observation was that fistulous aggregations …
Therapy Of Mycosis Fungoides, Harvey G. Shapero
Therapy Of Mycosis Fungoides, Harvey G. Shapero
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Mycosis fungoides is best viewed as a cutaneous lymphoma. Over a period of years, it progresses through three stages—the first consisting of red scaly patches, the second of pruritic plaques, and the third of brownish-red tumors. The therapy of each stage is outlined, and several selected modalities are discussed in detail, including topical steroids, systemic steroids, localized superficial irradiation, topical nitrogen mustard, electron beam, and chemotherapy (alkylating agents and antimetabolites.
Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Diagnosis And Treatment Of Gonorrhea, Paul A. Kvale
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The various methods for diagnosis of gonorrhea are reviewed. Gram-stained smear of urethral exudate in the mate is appropriate, but for the female emphasis is placed on the use of culture on Thayer-Martin medium. Currently effective modalities of treatment are detailed, pointing out that higher doses of antibiotics are generally required for females with pelvic inflammatory disease than for males with acute gonococcal urethritis. The necessity for follow-up is also discussed.
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
An Improved Method Of Staining Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Sections, Wanda Pusey, A. R. Villanueva
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cytological detail is well demonstrated in an improved method of staining aspirated bone marrow sections embedded in paraffin. The tinctorial patterns of the stain resemble some of its predecessors; thus, cell counting and identification involve little difficulty. The method has proven reliable, reproducible and a valuable addition in the diagnosis of bone marrow disorders. It is a useful tool in research problems in which objectives are the study of the bone marrow.

Foster Family Care For The Aged, Donald V. Sekora
Dissertations and Theses
The following was a research practicum instituted as an actual project for the State of Montana Welfare Department between June, 1970, and May, 1971. The project had a two-fold purpose in being conceived: one purpose was to fulfill a graduate school academic requirement; and the second purpose was to fulfill a responsibility to the people of Montana who would eventually gain some benefits from this project. The series of written documents that follow are the description of that project's conception and actualization in six Montana counties. The first part is the project idea and theory; the next two parts consist …
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Student Scholarship
The provided document, written in 1971, explores the multifaceted nature of hyperactivity in children, primarily within the framework of minimal brain dysfunction or MBD. The author notes that while these children often appear physically normal, they struggle with a disorganized central nervous system that prevents them from processing environmental stimuli effectively. This neurological impairment manifests as a cluster of symptoms, most notably hyperkinesis, distractibility, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. The text emphasizes that the number of children identified with these disorders is increasing, partly due to medical advances that allow more children to survive difficult births.

Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.
It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.
Forty-five catheters were examined after their removal from patients. Flow rates were determined on 33 …

A Comparison Of Various Teaching Methods For Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, B. Carol Altizer, Nancy S. Bailey
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to find out whether patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) learn more from auditory or from visual teaching. Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.
A pre-test was given to each of the patients who met the criteria for the study. One researcher gave the pre-test through an oral interview with the patient. After the pre-test, the patient received the teaching device assigned to him …
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.
Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …
A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler
A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An investigation has been conducted to consider the effects of midpalatal suture expansion on the cranial-facial complex. Nine patients were treated that had constricted maxillae. Data was obtained from frontal and lateral headplate radiographs which were taken at four intervals during treatment. The Rocky Mountain Data Systems diagnosis was utilized to interpret the radiographic data.
The data from the nine cases were averaged to obtain a composit [sic] change at each of the four times.
Examination of the lateral headplate data revealed that no permanent significant alteration occurred to the positions of the mandible or maxilla in a vertical or …
The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss
The Relationship Of The Bucco-Lingual Position Of The Mandibular First Molar To Occlusion And Arch Stability, Lothar M. Guttschuss
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Forty non-treated and twenty-two orthodontically treated cases were selected to determine the relationship of the bucco-lingual position of the mandibular first molar to occlusion and arch stability.
Plaster models and occlusal radiographs were obtained from all the cases. Anterior crowding, intermolar width, molar classification, and molar overhang relative to the basal bone were determined. The modified technique for occlusal radiographs used was found to result in radiographs which were more versatile and accurate when interchanged with the model measurements. Clinical applications of this technique include the determination of root angulations, location of impactions, and the fabrication of individualized preformed arch …

The Clinical Course Of Duodenal Ulcer Associated With Hyperparathyroidism, Melvin A. Block, Boy Frame, Thomas A. Fox Jr.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In 98 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, 15 had objective evidence of duodenal ulcer disease. Following operative correction of the hyperparathyroidism, improvement of duodenal ulcer disease occurred usually, but not uniformly, if unassociated with non-beta islet cell tumors. Correction of hyperparathyroidism in patients with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome does not significantly influence the peptic ulcer which should be given primary aggressive surgical treatment.
Persistence Of ''Australia Antigenemia" In Mentally Retarded Children Seven Years After Virus Hepatitis, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo
Persistence Of ''Australia Antigenemia" In Mentally Retarded Children Seven Years After Virus Hepatitis, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Australia antigen and antibody were assayed in acute and convalescent (1, 4 and 6 months) phase sera from 80 children with infectious hepatitis in an institution for the mentally retarded. A higher incidence of Australia antigenemia was found in 18 of 40 (45%) mongoloid children as compared to 9 of 40 (23%) non-mongoloid children. Australia antigen persisted 7 years after the hepatitis epidemic in 11 mongoloid and 2 non-mongoloid children with hepatitis. None of the hepatitis group, with or without Australia antigenemia, demonstrated precipitable antibody to the Australia antigen. The discussion emphasizes the lack of virologic and immunologic evidence relative …

A Replacement Prosthesis For The Hip: A Preliminary Report, H. M. Frost, E. R. Guise
A Replacement Prosthesis For The Hip: A Preliminary Report, H. M. Frost, E. R. Guise
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Because of theoretical as well as practical difficulty in the total hip endoprostheses available to orthopaedic surgeons at the present time, an anlysis of the present and potential difficulties reveals that substitution of a roller-bearing for the present slider-bearing prosthesis and the establishment of a larger end-bearing surface on the acetabular side would be of benefit. Thus, the Ring prosthesis was re-designed to satisfy these hopes. A modification of the Ring's approach gives complete acetabular exposure and control of the prosthetic insertion. This is a preliminary report describing the design modifications of a prosthesis, presently under investigation, and illustrated by …

In the control group of 57 patients, there were 12 febrile episodes; of these, 7 were due to proven bacterial infection, 2 were due lo possible bacterial infection, and 3 were of undetermined etiology. All three febrile episodes in this latter group …
The Hazards Of Rubella Serodiagnosis From Single Serum Studies In Pregnancy, Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi
The Hazards Of Rubella Serodiagnosis From Single Serum Studies In Pregnancy, Gerald A. Logrippo, Hajime Hayashi
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hemagglutination-inhibition (HA-I) titres for rubella were studied in 200 nurses, 87 pregnant women, in plasma and serum pools, and in laboratory personnel. The percentage of individuals susceptible to rubella in the child-bearing ages was 11.5%> among the non-pregnant nurses and 23% among the pregnant women assayed at their first prenatal visit. Serodiagnosis of active rubella necessitates two or more serial serum studies during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Effect Of Freezing And Thawing On Uptake Of Amino Acids Into Human Erythrocytes, Richard Moore, Rita Parenti, I. Rena Bizios
Effect Of Freezing And Thawing On Uptake Of Amino Acids Into Human Erythrocytes, Richard Moore, Rita Parenti, I. Rena Bizios
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
ABSTRACT - The transport of "C-amino acids into human erythrocytes and into erythrocytes which had been frozen and thawed was studied experimentally. The relative rates of uptake were found to be (in decreasing order): phenylalanine, leucine, alanine, trythophan, and glycine. Freezing (using gycerol as the cryoprotective additive) and thawing had no significant effect on either the magnitude of the rate constants or on the order of the above relative rates of amino acid uptake into erythrocytes suspended in isotonic TRIS-HCl buffer.
