The Inhibition Of Bone Formation Occurring Under Weightlessness : The Effect Of Skeletal Unloading On Serum Levels Of A Bone-Derived Growth Factor, Jean D. Sibonga

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A deleterious effect of spaceflight on human health is the loss of bone associated with the prolonged lack of gravitational stress on the skeleton. A potential for bone loss is indicated by the hypercalciuria and decreased heel bone density determined in Skylab astronauts. Histological studies of juvenile laboratory rats in actual spaceflight and in simulation models document a suppression of bone formation with little alteration of bone resorption. The mechanism for net bone loss needs to be defined in order to develop measures for its prevention or correction.

Skeletal growth factors, which may mediate coupling and locally regulate bone volume …

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan Jan 1988

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

Primary Aldosteronism At Henry Ford Hospital In The 1980s, Max Wisgerhof Dec 1987

Primary Aldosteronism At Henry Ford Hospital In The 1980s, Max Wisgerhof

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report describes the experience with the diagnosis and treatment of primary aldosteronism at Henry Ford Hospital since 1980. Of the 28 patients who received the diagnosis. 13 had unilateral primary aldosteronism and 15 had idiopathic hyperaldosteronism. Individual cases are used to demonstrate clinical points. The clue to the presence of primary aldosteronism in a hypertensive patient is hypokalemia. The diagnosis is established by showing 1) high plasma aldosterone after intravenous saline or high urinary aldosterone after treatment with sodium chloride orally, and 2) low stimulated plasma renin activity. Treatment with potassium supplement should be given during the testing. Unilateral …

Ocular Irrigating Solutions: A Comparison Between Balanced Salt Solution And L-410 (Po-Eis), Philip C. Hessburg, Paul M. Johnston Dec 1987

Ocular Irrigating Solutions: A Comparison Between Balanced Salt Solution And L-410 (Po-Eis), Philip C. Hessburg, Paul M. Johnston

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The ability of two ocular irrigating solutions to reduce postoperative corneal edema after intracapsular cataract extraction was compared using ultrasonic pachymetry. All patients had anterior chamber intraocular lenses implanted. The solutions were balanced salt solution and solution L-410 (PO-EIS), an eye irrigation solution containing dextran 40 and bicarbonate. Corneas irrigated with either solution showed no significant difference in postoperative edema. The use of L-410 (as an alternative to balanced salt solution) may not be necessary in intracapsular cataract extraction.

Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien Jan 1987

Biochemical And Histological Evaluation Of Normal Human Epidermis Vs Cultured Human Epidermis, Ngo Thi Bich Lien

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro for transplantation purposes in case of severe burns. Single keratinocytes were harvested from human epidermis and grown in culture flasks such that multilayered sheets of keratinocyte cells were harvestable in approximately three weeks. In order to evaluate cultured epidermis for equivalency with normal human epidermis, biochemical and histological studies were performed. Thin sections of cultured epidermis were shown to be composed of cells that had undergone developmental differentiation, but not terminal differentiation. Biochemical analyses of keratin and prekeratin proteins isolated from cultured epidermis indicated that cultured keratinocytes have electrophoretic patterns similar to keratins/prekeratins …

Multiple Function Intubation Apparatus And Method, Jane A. Norton, Diana L. Twyman, A. Byron Young, Robert Rapp

Surgery Faculty Patents

An apparatus and its method of use are provided allowing lavage, sump and enteral feeding operations with only one intubation. The apparatus includes a first tube having two distinct passageways. One of these passageways completely contains a second, feeding tube during intubation. Once the first tube is in place in the patient, the second tube is extended from the first tube so as to enter the stomach. The extension of the second tube opens ports in the first passageway of the first tube, thereby allowing sump or lavage treatment with the second passageway of the first tube serving as an …

Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins Apr 1986

Magnesium, Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Blood From Children With Diabetes Mellitus, Linda Lowers Jenkins

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Trace element levels in blood from diabetic children were investigated and compared to control children. Plasma, erythrocyte, mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells were analyzed for magnesium, copper, and zinc content. Leukocyte separation was performed by density gradient centrifugation on Ficoll-Hypaque, followed by washing steps to remove platelet contamination and hypotonic lysis to remove red cell contamination. Polarized Zeeman-effect atomic absorption spectroscopy was used for trace metal analysis.

Decreased plasma magnesium levels were observed in the diabetic children. This finding is well documented and probably due to increased urinary magnesium loss from glycosuria. Lymphocyte magnesium levels in the diabetic children were also …
