Computer Applications In The Vascular Registry Of Henry Ford Hospital: Use Of A Simplified Access Method, Joseph P. Elliott Jr., Kunwar Kapoor, John G. Hageman, D. Emerick Szilagyi, Roger F. Smith, Michalene Mcpharlin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The Vascular Registry of Henry Ford Hospital was initiated by one of the authors in 1957 to provide a consistent and accurate method of documenting and correlating the clinical results of the treatment of occlusive and aneurysmal arterial diseases. Data collection for each patient includes demographic information, treatment of clinical problems, and followup observations. Initially, the system consisted of keypunch cards and eventually magnetic tape processing. By 1980, it was necessary to further update the system because of the increase in patient volume, the need to minimize manual manipulations, and the demand for research data. The present system uses institutional …

Cardiac Papillary Fibroelastoma: A Source Of Coronary Artery Emboli And Myocardial Infarction, Gerald Fine, Shoba R. Pai
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas, although generally small and asymptomatic, have been suspected of being responsible for cerebral accidents, angina, and sudden death. The diagnosis of tumor embolization, considered in a number of cases, has been based on circumstantial evidence in all instances except for one case of sudden death due to embolism to the left anterior descending coronary artery. In all other cases, angina and sudden death have been related to a ball valve-type obstruction of a coronary ostium by tumor. The present case documents tumor embolism to peripheral right coronary arteries with associated, clinically silent myocardial changes.
A Comparison Of Enamel Detachments After Debonding Between Unitek's "Dynalok" Bracket And A Foil-Mesh Bracket: A Scanning Electron Microscope Study, Robert E. Meister
A Comparison Of Enamel Detachments After Debonding Between Unitek's "Dynalok" Bracket And A Foil-Mesh Bracket: A Scanning Electron Microscope Study, Robert E. Meister
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The intent of this paper was to: 1. Evaluate the mode of adhesive failure when debonding both flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets. 2. Evaluate the bracket bases for enamel detachments. 3. Measure the enamel detachments.
After preforming shear test on flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets mounted to extracted human teeth it was determined that failure occurred at the enamel/adhesive interface 30% of the time, at the bracket/adhesive interface 10% of the time and a combination of these 60% of the time for both groups.
Five brackets from each group were evaluated for enamel detachments using energy dispersive x-ray …
Age-Related Changes Of Neurites In Meissner Corpuscles Of Diabetic, Vicky R. Ras
Age-Related Changes Of Neurites In Meissner Corpuscles Of Diabetic, Vicky R. Ras
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis is based on a qualitative and quantitative study of the neural component of Meissner corpuscles of diabetic and non-diabetic mice. Age-related changes were also documented in these mechanoreceptors. Corpuscles from forty-six diabetic mice and forty-six non-diabetic mice ranging from 2.5 to 17 months old were studied. Forepaw index digital pads were formalin-fixed and frozen-sectioned parallel to each digit and perpendicular to the skin. Serial sections were then silver-impregnated to allow light microscopic examination of the neurites in the corpuscles.
Neurites became more coarse, tortuous, branched, varicose, and thus more complex until middle age. Corpuscle size appeared greatest at …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A total of 44 Long-Evans rats received 5.7 g/kg tri-O-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) orally every 3 days for 6 days. A second group of 13 rats received 4.6 g/kg orally every 3 days for 6 days. Animals were administered atropine sulfate (10 mg/kg) intraperitoneally every 6 hours or as needed to alleviate cholinergic symptoms. Ten control animals were given corn oil orally. Eight rats (18%) survived the 5.7 g/kg dose regimen and 5 rats (38%) survived the 4.6 g/kg dose regimen. Surviving rats were killed at 30-33 days post-dose. Signs of delayed neuropathy included ataxia and motor impairment.

Immunology Of The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, Patrick W. Mclaughlin, Carl B. Lauter
Immunology Of The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, Patrick W. Mclaughlin, Carl B. Lauter
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) first recognized in 1981, has been extensively studied, and the most recent studies have demonstrated that its defects extend well beyond the apparent deficient cell-mediated immunity to include humoral immunity, autoimmunity, and abnormal immunoregulation. The recent discovery of a retrovirus, HTLV III, as a possible etiologic agent is discussed in relation to other viruses known to cause immunodeficiency. Simian AIDS, an animal model of virus-induced immunodeficiency, is also discussed. Recommendations are made regarding the interpretation and limitations of immune testing in AIDS, including a discussion of how apparently healthy homosexuals and groups at risk develop …

An Overview Of The Newer Antibiotics, Ramon Del Busto
An Overview Of The Newer Antibiotics, Ramon Del Busto
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The introduction of a large number of new antibiotics has made selecting the one most appropriate for treatment a confusing task for the practicing physician. One problem is that the differences in pharmacokinetics, in vitro activity, and clinical indications between some of these agents may be relatively minor; this is especially true of the new cephalosporins. Another problem is that the generic names of the cephalosporins are so similar that it is impractical, even for the infectious diseases specialist, to be familiar with all of them. This review attempts to summarize the most important characteristics of these new antibiotics and …

Prospects For The Medical Use Of Interferon In 1984, Bosko Postic, Julio C. Arroyo
Prospects For The Medical Use Of Interferon In 1984, Bosko Postic, Julio C. Arroyo
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Interferon, a natural and wide spectrum antiviral polypeptide that was discovered in 1957, has been extensively described. In addition to its antiviral effect, interferon has been found to suppress tumor growth and modulate the immune response. Until 1980, interferon was primarily prepared for clinical trials in human leukocytes derived from the buffy coat of whole blood. A major breakthrough occurred in the late 1970s when human interferon was produced by DNA recombinant methods in such heterologous cells as bacteria (genetic engineering). Interferon is not commercially available in 1984, but it may, based on clinical trials in humans, become part of …

Congenital Seminal Vesicle Cyst: A Specific Diagnosis By Computed Tomography, Leo Drolshagen, Michael A. Sandler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Computed tomography (CT) has been shown to be of great value in the assessment of the urinary tract. However, this modality has been primarily used in the evaluation of renal masses and the staging of urinary tract carcinomas. It may also be useful in less common abnormalities, such as mesonephric duct anomalies including congenital seminal vesicle cysts. These lesions are associated with renal agenesis and may produce urinary tract symptoms, or be discovered incidentally. We present a case of a congenital vesicle cyst associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis with characteristic CT findings allowing for a specific diagnosis.

A 56-year-old man presented with a one-year history of progressive weakness predominantly affecting his extremities and persistent low back pain. Ouchterlony immunodiffusion of the concentrated urine detected a marked increase in lambda light chains. A sternal bone marrow documented a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Screening high resolution agarose gel electrophoresis revealed diffuse hypogammaglobulinemia and, retrospectively, an equivocal, faint band which migrated in the fast gamma region. By using a combination of Immunoelectrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis, this questionable band was determined to represent an IgE lambda monoclonal protein. Radioimmunoassay for IgE documented a serum concentration of 50.6 mg/dl. No intact IgE …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus developed severe abdominal pain and tender hepatomegaly associated with progressive pancytopenia and elevated serum levels of circulating immune complexes. Liver scintigram demonstrated extreme hepatomegaly with poor colloid uptake and splenomegaly with increased colloid uptake. An unusual accumulation of colloid in the lungs was also noted. Subsequent clinical and laboratory studies raised the possibility of saturation of the reticuloendothelial system in the liver by circulating immune complexes and blood cells, a condition demonstrated in experimental animals, but not hitherto well documented in the human immune complex disorder.

Temporomandibular Joint Relations Of Bone And Lateral Pterygoid Muscle : A Computerized Tomography Study, Duane K. Yamashiro
Temporomandibular Joint Relations Of Bone And Lateral Pterygoid Muscle : A Computerized Tomography Study, Duane K. Yamashiro
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study utilized the imaging technique of computerized tomography (CT). Scans taken with a GE CT/N 8800 scanner of an adult cadaver and a 12-patient group were obtained through the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, TMJ Department, and Loma Linda University Medical Center, Department of Neuroradiology.
The lateral scout image and a lateral cephalogram of the cadaver were compared using six angular measurements for facial type from Ricketts' Cephalometric Analysis. The six measurements, Maxillary Depth, Facial Depth, Mandibular Arc, Mandibular Plane, Lower Face Height and Facial Axis, were found to be similar. This allowed the investigator to rely exclusively …
Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen
Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The diagnosis and treatment of third molars has often been cited as a special problem to the orthodontist. If the prognosis of third molars could be determined, orthodontic treatment could progress on a more positive basis.
This study was designed to provide a method of deciding whether developing third molars will erupt or become impacted.
Records from 130 orthodontically treated cases of Dr. Fredsall8 were studied. Several factors were evaluated and measured using the patients' cephalometric radiographs.
The actual fate of the third molars were recorded in the hope it could be used to predict what to expect from …
Inhibition Of Growth Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Cultured Fibroblasts By Human Recombinant Gamma Interferon., E. R. Pfefferkorn, Paul M. Guyre
Inhibition Of Growth Of Toxoplasma Gondii In Cultured Fibroblasts By Human Recombinant Gamma Interferon., E. R. Pfefferkorn, Paul M. Guyre
Dartmouth Scholarship
The growth of Toxoplasma gondii in cultured human fibroblasts was inhibited by recombinant human gamma interferon at concentrations of 8 to 16 U/ml. The interferon was titrated by observing a total inhibition of parasite plaque formation 7 days after infection. Inhibition of the growth of T. gondii in the early days after infection was measured by marked reductions in the incorporation of radioactive uracil, a precursor that can only be used by the parasites. This assay showed that when cells were pretreated with gamma interferon for 1 day and then infected, inhibition of T. gondii growth could be readily detected …

How Registered Nurses In Skilled Nursing Facilities Rate The Importance Of And The Frequency Engaged In Specific Nursing Behaviors Related To Their Role, Christine Anne Heine
Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations
Registered nurses in skilled nursing facilities were surveyed using the Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance to determine: (1) how they rated the importance of specific nursing behaviors related to their role, (2) how they rated the frequency engaged in the same specific nursing behaviors related to their role, and (3) if there was a relationship between how they rated the specific nursing behaviors for importance and frequency. There were five subgroups of nursing behaviors: (a) leadership, (b) nursing process, (c) teaching and collaboration, (d) interpersonal relations and communication, and (e) professional development. Registered nurses rated all of the behaviors as …
