A computerized system for instruction and diagnosis of clinical electrolyte and acid-base disorders has been implemented on a PDP-8/e minicomputer at the Medical University of South Carolina. The program is designed for use by persons at various stages of medical training: student, house staff, and clinician. This system not only aids the physician in making his diagnosis, but also serves as a means of educational instruction in acid-base physiology for the student. A patient file has been established in conjunction with the program. The file enables a physician to follow a patient's course over time. Several auxiliary computer programs have …

The major objective of the work was to clarify some of the adaptive mechanisms that a common widespread species would show as a possible requirement for survival in its natural habitats. Analysis of various populations of Xanthium (cocklebur) indicated differences in chlorophyll levels and leaf chloroplasts ultrastructure between populations. The study also revealed some insight into intrapopulational variation in dark requirements for flowering of selected populations. In addition, caloric values of dried leaf material of cocklebur were analyzed for interpopulational differences. A study of the seasonal and spatial distribution of phytoplankters in relation to physio-chemical parameters and discharge regime was conducted in Barren Lake, Kentucky, a flood control reservoir with a dam equipped with a multilevel outlet, from February, 1970, through January, 1971. Paired samples were collected every two weeks from April through October and every three weeks from November through March. Samples were obtained from eight depths in the main pool area of the reservoir and from the tailwater. Reservoir discharge was primarily from the upper 3 m from April through September. Jean Mayer has postulated the presence of glucoreceptors located primarily in the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei of the brain which are activated by glucose in the measure that they utilize it. According to Mayer, hunger occurs when glucose is not available for metabolic purposes and satiation supervenes when glucose is made available. Control of this mechanism rests with the glucoreceptors. These receptors are believed to be destroyed when an injection of the compound goldthioglucose is given to mice. These animals subsequently become obese and are found to have gold deposits and lesions in the ventromedial area and also in other parts …

This model of placental CO₂ and O₂ exchange calculates the time course of changes in P_^CO2, [HCO₃^-], and [H⁺] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO₂ (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO₂ and O₂ diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions. An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

The primary objective or this study is essentially to acquire further knowledge of the factors involved in the nervous and humoral control of vascular smooth muscle tone. The relative importance of the nervous and endogenous vasotropic humoral control or vasomotor tone under normal conditions as well as under conditions or hypotension can be evaluated, at least in part, by observing the electrical activity occurring in single vascular smooth muscle cells of the mesenteric microcirculation. This study was designed to show the immediate destination of an embolus formed in the lumen of an intravenous catheter placed in a peripheral vessel. The hypothesis stated that clots injected into a peripheral vessel will lodge in the lungs. A subhypothesis was that the clot may lodge anywhere along the circulatory pathway.

Cercariac of Schistosoma mansoni were studied for glycogen utilization, uptake of glucose from solution, lactic acid production, and respiration.

Using the anthrone method of determination of carbohydrate, the amount of glycogen used by a single cercaria in 4 hours is determined as 43.2 x 10^-4 μg ± 6.6 x 10^-4 μg.

Glucose was not observed to have been used from solution under the conditions of the experiment, even in the presence of trehalose. The determinations were made by the Glucostat method.

Three hundred Swiss Webster albino mice three weeks of age were placed on low (8%), medium (24%), high (48%) protein levels and a commercial laboratory animal feed, Purina Chow for various lengths of time: (1) simultaneously with infection, and four weeks thereafter, (2) three weeks before infection and throughout the four-week infection period, and (3) six weeks prior to infection and during the infection period. The protein source was casein. This study was conducted to discover the effects of (1) an interpersonal relationship and (2) an interpersonal relationship and music therapy on preoperative patients in a selected hospital.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study. A checklist and a tape recording of selected music were used as a tool of research. Two groups of preoperative patients were given nursing care by the researcher. Patients in Group One received care with an aim toward developing an interpersonal relationship, while patients in Group Two received the same as Group One with the addition of music therapy.

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).

Evidence was presented in 1949 by Bendich, Getler, and Brown (2), that the free pyrimidine base, cytosine, was not incorporated into the nucleotides of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Further studies by Hammarsten, Reichard, and Saluste (9) with cytidine and those by Roll, Weinfeld, and Carroll (26) with cytidylic acid, showed that the nucleoside and nucleotide derivatives were well incorporated into DNA. These experiments indicated that the conversion of the riboside (or ribotide) to the deoxyribose form had occurred with the nucleosidic linkage intact. This theory was further substantiated by Rose and Schweigert (29) using cytidylic acid incorporation into the total viscera …

A Study Of Regeneration Of Peripheral Nerve In The Rat, James C. Jay

Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.

Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.
