Effects Of Adipocyte Deficiency Of Angiotensin Type 1a Receptors In Models Of Obesity And Hypercholesterolemia, Kelly Anne Putnam Jan 2012

Effects Of Adipocyte Deficiency Of Angiotensin Type 1a Receptors In Models Of Obesity And Hypercholesterolemia, Kelly Anne Putnam

Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences

Adipocytes express angiotensin II (AngII) receptors; however the direct effects of AngII at the adipocyte remain unclear. Knockout mouse models of renin-angiotensin system components exhibit reduced body weight, reduced adiposity, improved glucose tolerance, and improved blood pressure when fed high fat diets, which may be due to reduced action of AngII through the AT1aR in adipocytes. Additionally, hypercholesterolemic AT1aR deficient mice are protected from AngII-induced increases in atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation. We hypothesized that deficiency of AT1aR in adipocytes would reduce the development of obesity, obesity-induced disorders, and vascular diseases. To test this hypothesis, we created a …

The Epigenetic Regulation Of Cubilin And The Physiological Role Of This Receptor In Maintaining The Homeostasis Of Serum Albumin And Hdl, Sayed Obaidullah Aseem

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Cubilin is an endocytic receptor capable of mediating the endocytosis of multiple ligands including High Density Lipoprotein apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-1) and albumin. It is highly expressed on the epithelium of intestinal villi and renal proximal tubules. In the kidney, endocytosis mediated by cubilin and its co-receptor megalin is the principal mechanism for proximal tubule reabsorption of filtered proteins, such as albumin and apoA-1. Yet, the consequences of cubilin deficiency on the blood levels of albumin and apoA-1 have not been studied. Furthermore, cubilin is downregulated in chronic diseases such as diabetes. However, little is known about the regulation of cubilin …

The bacterial dinucleotide second messenger c-di-GMP has emerged as a central molecule in regulating bacterial behavior, including motility and biofilm formation. Proteins for the synthesis and degradation of c-di-GMP and effectors for its signal transmission are widely used in the bacterial domain. Previous work established the GGDEF-EAL domain-containing receptor LapD as a central switch in Pseudomonas fluorescens cell adhesion. LapD senses c-di-GMP inside the cytosol and relays this signal to the outside by the differential recruitment of the periplasmic protease LapG. Here we identify the core components of an orthologous system in Legionella pneumophila. Despite only moderate sequence conservation at …

The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

How perfect a food or meal is depends on hedonic and nutritional factors. The hedonic component is influenced by all of our 5 senses. In addition, social, environmental, and cognitive/experiential factors may have an effect on our attitude towards a food. On the other hand, nutrient composition and content, as well as bioavailability, determine how nutritionally perfect a food is. So, does the perfect food exist? What makes a food or a meal perfect? This paper will try to answer these questions by briefly discussing the most important variables.

Serum PON-1 activity was found to be negatively correlated with free T4 levels (r = -0.324, P < 0.05) and positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.330, P < 0.05) and TSH levels (r = 0.577, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our PON-1 results show that there is decreased antioxidant defense in patients with hyperthyroidism. Therefore, we think that effective antioxidant therapy to increase PON-1 activity may be a therapeutic option in patients with hyperthyroidism.
