The Effects Of Shock Waves On The Rat Fetus, Orhan Yalçin, Lütfi Tahmaz, Zuhal Yumbul, İdris Bi̇lgi̇ç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
There is an ongoing controversy regarding shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) contraindicated during pregnancy (1, 2). While the effects of shock waves on a variety of cells in both clinical and experimental studies are well documented, their effects on the fetus remain to be clarified. In this study, we investigated the effects of SWL on the rat fetus. On the 8th, 11th, 14th and 17th days of pregnancy, 100, 250 or 500 shock waves were produced with a Multimed 2001 ELMED Systems Lithotriptor. In ongoing pregnancy, the effects of SWL on fetuses ranged from mild in early pregnancy to moderate and …

The characteristics of blood flow patterns detected by transvaginal pulsed and color Doppler ultrasonography were evoluated in ectopic pregnanacies. Two hundred and fifteen patients with surgically and histopathologically confirmed ectopic preg-nancies were included in this study. Of 215 patients, 113 (52.5 %) had an ectopic trophoblastic flow. 106 of them (93.8 %)showed a typical trophoblastic flow characterized by a high-velocity and low-impedance flow, whereas 7 (6.2 %) had bizarre blood waveforms including high-impedance and reversed diastolic flow. It was concluded that although most of the cases with ectopic pregnancy demonstrate a typical flow, a wide range of flow waveforms including …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Cardiac Troponin T (TnT) is a regulatory contractile protein not normally found in blood. Its detection in the circulation has been shown to be a sensitive and specific marker for myocardial cell damage. This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of TnT enzyme immunoassay for the early diagnosis of AMI (Acute Myocardial Infarction) and to compare this newly developed test with the conventionally used cardiac enzyme tests in need of an alternative test of greater sensitivity and specificity. The study population consisted of 13 patients with a mean age of 52±8 years who were hospitalized for AMI. Blood …

The lateral ligaments of talocrural articulation, namely anterior talofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament and cal-caneofibular ligament, are important in an-atomic reconstruction. If reconstructed improperly, they are known to limit the movements of talocrural articulation and subtalar articulation (talocalcaneal articulation) Studies on anatomy of anterior talofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament known as the lateral ligaments have some discrepancies. Knowing the importance of a more detailed discription of ankle ligament anatomy for reconstructing and fixing the ligaments, we studied 24 ankles and examined the width, length, attachment points of all three ligaments and their relationships with talocrural joint and …

The Inhibitory Effect Of Zinc On Imipenem Andmeropenem Susceptibility Of Pseudomonasaeruginosa, Selahattin Atmaca, Ramazan Çiçek, Kadri Gül
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In this study we have showed that zinc ion has an inhibitory activity on imipenem and meropenem suspectibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. When zinc ion concentration of Mueller-Hinthon agar (MHA) media was gradually increased the zone diameters of imipenem and meropenem gradually decreased. So we concluded that zinc concentration in the media might effect imipenem and meropenem susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and might indicate false resistance to imipenem and meropenem. Therefore the use of these antipseudomonal antibiotics in Pseudomonas infections may be restricted.
