Some Variations In The Formation Of The Brachialplexus In Infants*, Ahmet Uzun, Sai̇t Bi̇lgi̇ç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The anatomical variations of the brachial plexus in human have clinical significance to surgeons, radiologists and anatomists. We studied some variations in the formation of 130 brachial plexuses in sixty-five infant cadavers (34 males, 31 females; aged 1-7 days). The brachial plexus consisted of the 5 th , 6 th , 7 th , and 8 th cervical spinal nerves and 1 st thoracic spinal nerve (69.23%). We found that among the 130 plexuses, 30.77% also received a contribution from C4 (Fig.1, A ) . The variations in the formation of brachial plexuses were classified into three groups. Group 1 …

The t(8;21) between the AML1 and ETO genes is a commonly seen genetic alteration in acute myeloid leukemia. Recently, we reported that the fusion partner ETO binds to the human nuclear receptor co-repressor (NCOR), a member of the NCOR/SIN3/histone deacetylase complex. This complex mediates transcriptional repression as a result of chromatin remodeling. Here, we used a combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization and hybrid panels to localize the human NCOR gene (NCOR) to chromosome band 17p11.2. The position of human NCOR on 17p11 raises the possibility of deranged transcriptional regulation in malignant disorders associated with deletions of 17p.

Atherosclerosis is the most common manifestation of cardiovascular disease. However the exact mechanisms that take place in its pathogenesis have not yet been completely understood. Free radicals and lipid peroxidation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction also may be an aggravating factor in this process. Unfortunately all of the previous studies have focused on the atherosclerotic tissue. Our aim was to establish a relationship between the antioxidant enzymes and plasma nitrate as an index of whole-body, endogenous nitric oxide production in coronary heart disease and also the relationship between these parameters and the …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Fanconi's anemia is an autosomal recessive disorder with manifestation of chromosomal instability inducible by alkylating agents. Since 1989 we studied 85 patients with suspected Fanconi's anemia (FA) to confirm diagnosis. Cytogenetic analyses were performed on spontaneous and induced cultures of peripheral blood samples. Induction was carried with mitomycin-C (MMC) or diepoxybutane (DEB). The normal range of spontaneous, MMC and DEB-induced breaks were 0.00-0.10, 0.00-0.16 and 0.00-0.16 per cell respectively. Fanconi's anemia was confirmed when breaks were above the normal threshold. According to this criterion 59 patients were confirmed as having FA. Some of the siblings were also investigated to exclude …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Hearing conservation in acoustic neuroma surgery via the retrosigmoid approach depends upon a good exposure of the internal auditory canal from behind avoiding labyrinthine injury. The accessibility is influenced largely by the individual characteristics of the temporal bone and the variability of the surgical landmarks is the result of different skull base shapes among different races. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of race on the exposure of the internal auditory canal of Turkish subjects via the retrosigmoid approach. Axial temporal bone CT scans of 40 Turkish individuals were studied by measuring the relevant parameters and …

This paper presents an overview of observational and fish sampling techniques for investigating fish lesions, morbidity and mortality. These sampling techniques and investigations are much like detective work and require attention to detail, common sense, technical proficiency and experience. To solve the mystery of a fish kill, the investigator must use available evidence and clues to piece together a series of events that often have long since passed. The cause of these field events may be chemical, biological or physical; more often, it is some combination of these. An initial categorization approach may be used to reduce the great number …

Cancer is a multifactorial and multistep process. Conventional cytogenetics has become a major working field in cancer research. Chromosome rearrangements are recognized as critical in the pathogenesis of human cancer. Molecular biology and molecular cytogenetics technology have increased our ability to identify genetic alterations in cancer cells. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), oligonucleotide-primed in situ DNA synthesis (PRINS) are the most common molecular cytogenetic procedures in cancer research but they have limits with precise localization in their principles in cancer researching. However, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) is a powerful molecular cytogenetic technique which allows the analysis …
