Total And Lipid-Bound Sialic Acid Levels Inactinic Keratosis And Basal Cell Carcinoma, Pervi̇n Vural, Mukaddes Canbaz, Di̇lek Selçuki̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Malignant cells have more sialic acid in their cell membrane than normal cells. Many studies have shown that mean values of total sialic acid (TSA) or lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA) were higher in patients with cancer than in normal subjects. Sialic acid levels correlate with stage of disease, tumor burden, degree of metastasis and recurrence of disease. The aim of the present study was to determine the plasma TSA, LSA, total protein (TP) and TSA/TP values in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and evaluate if they are sensitive markers for malignancy. Plasma TSA and LSA were measured according to the method …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Cardiac troponin T (TnT) is a regulatory contractile protein not normally found in blood. Minor elevations of TnT in patients with unstable angina have been associated with an increased risk of subsequent death or Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). We used a neewly developed enzyme immunoassay for TnT to determine whether its presence in the serum of patients with unstable angina was a prognostic indicator. We screened 105 hatients with unstable angina (23 with accelerated or subacute angina and, 82 with acute angina at rest) for TnT every eight hours for two days after admission to the hospital. The outcomes of …

Accuracy Of Sphygmomanometers, Okay Başak, Şebnem Karazeybek
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
One of the factors affecting the accuracy of readings of blood pressure is the equipment used. Defects or inaccuracy of aneroid sphygmomanometers may be source of error in blood pressure measurement. We inspected 100 sphygmomanometers for physical defects and assessed their accuracy against a standard mercury manometer at four different pressure points. 46 of the 100 sphygmomanometers were determined to be intolerant (deviation from the mercury manometer by greater than±3 mm Hg at two or more of the test points). There were faults in the inflation-deflation system of 34 sphygmomanometers. The most common physical defects were: defective pump bulb, defective …

S-Aroylmethyl N, N-Disubstituteddithiocarbamates With Antiparkinson Activity, Rahi̇me Şi̇mşek, Ci̇hat Şafak, Kevser Erol, Kami̇l Vural
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Seven S-aroylmethyl N,N-disubstituted dithiocarbamate derivatives have been synthesized and their effects on oxotremorine induced tremor have been investigated on mice pretreated with the proparkinsonian drug haloperidol. While the compound 1f inhibited oxotremorine-induced tremors at doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg levels, compounds 1a, 1c and 1e had this effect at the dose of 100 mg/kg. The compounds 1b, 1d and 1g had no effect on oxotremorine-induced tremors in mice. These results suggest that some of these derivatives have central antimuscarinic effects and antiparkinson activities.

Stress activates the hypotalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis, increases circulating glucocorticoids, and is associated with alterations in immune functions. Nasal mucosa is richly innervated by sympathetic nerve fiber and nasal patency changes in response to various sympathetic stimuli. These fibres form close neuroeffector junctions with lymphocytes and macrophages. Nasal lavage and peripheral blood samples were collected from healthy medical students one hour before their exams and a week later, after the declaration of results of the exams were announced. We determined and compared the distribution of T lymphocyte subsets in students under psychological stress The T cell: natural killer cell, T helper …
