Advanced Ysz/Si(B)Cn And Bnnt/Si(B)Cn Ceramics Matrix Composites For Extreme Environments In Hydrogen Combustion, Yiting Wang
Advanced Ysz/Si(B)Cn And Bnnt/Si(B)Cn Ceramics Matrix Composites For Extreme Environments In Hydrogen Combustion, Yiting Wang
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The growing demand for carbon-neutral energy conversion has accelerated the development of hydrogen-fueled gas turbine systems, which operate at significantly higher temperatures and more chemically aggressive environments than conventional natural gas turbines. To meet these stringent requirements, ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials consisting of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fiber reinforced Si(B)CN ceramic matrix were developed. To further enhance in-plane heat dissipation, thermal stability, thermal shock resistance, and thermal cycling performance, a Si(B)CN/Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNT) nanocomposite coating was incorporated onto the YSZ/Si(B)CN composites. Microstructural characterization confirmed the formation of a continuous Si(B)CN ceramic matrix reinforced with uniformly distributed BNNTs. The resulting …
Turbine Exhaust Cylinder And Manifold Wake Interactions At High Swirl Angle, Christian A. Anzalotta
Turbine Exhaust Cylinder And Manifold Wake Interactions At High Swirl Angle, Christian A. Anzalotta
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
A commonly observed flow interaction in industrial gas turbine (IGT) exhaust diffuser configurations is investigated, where upstream structural wakes interact with downstream airfoil-like components, potentially leading to unsteady loading. To better understand the mechanisms contributing to this behavior, a scale-model is designed. Dynamic similarity is achieved by matching the Strouhal number (St) of the vortex shedding from the strut. A bell-mouth followed by a swirler is installed in front of the strut to mimic the flow angles at the inlet section of the turbine exhaust. Experiments are conducted for three swirl angles, namely, 30°, 45°, and 60°. Power spectra computed …
A Framework For Optimizing Creep Model Parameters From Conventional And Accelerated Creep Tests, William D. Day
A Framework For Optimizing Creep Model Parameters From Conventional And Accelerated Creep Tests, William D. Day
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The demand for efficiency in power generation and propulsion requires higher firing temperatures and reduced cooling air consumption which raises metal temperatures. This makes simplistic creep evaluations, such as Larson-Miller and Orr-Sherby-Dorn parameters, inadequate. Finite element analysis (FEA) must simulate primary and secondary creep, predict failure, and provide design guidance. Gas turbine components, expected to last over 100,000 hours, often require extrapolation of limited test data for new materials. It is essential that robust creep simulations be developed efficiently, accurately, and effectively use limited test data.
This dissertation describes an optimized framework for efficient creep testing and rapid construction of …
Cylinder Wake Stability Effects Of Passive Forebody Modification And Active Harmonic Actuation, Matt Duran
Cylinder Wake Stability Effects Of Passive Forebody Modification And Active Harmonic Actuation, Matt Duran
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This dissertation investigates the manipulation of global and three-dimensional instabilities in the wake of a circular cylinder through two separate flow control methods. This study first focuses on the influence of attached leading edge forebodies as a form of passive flow control designed to introduce upstream streamline curvature, where the curvature takes the form of a concave and convex case. We demonstrate that for both cases this induced curvature significantly modifies the primary instability, which suppresses periodic vortex shedding (Von Kármán vortex street). We found an increase in critical Reynolds number of 56.6 and 60.1 for the concave and convex …

Processing, Characterization And Performance Of Ceramic Liners For Hydrogen Gas Turbine Engines, Fahim Faysal
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Advanced ceramics and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are known for their endurance at high temperatures. This study investigated the fabrication and testing of two material systems: silicon carbide nitride (SiCN) reinforced with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fiber manufactured through polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP), and 3D-printed alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramics. The CMC thermal stability at high temperatures was explored through a hydrogen torch test. The CMC surface could withstand a temperature of 1,400°C for 10 minutes during the torch test. Furthermore, the internal surface of a hydrogen combustion chamber was coated with CMC to assess its applicability as a protective barrier against …

The Development Of An Experimental Chemical Reactor Network Facility For Power Generation And Aviation Gas Turbines, Kesly Lubin
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Gas turbines are the backbone of power generation globally; however, they are also one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases and harmful emissions. Advanced combustion strategies, when applied to energy generation, can offer increased optimization of the combustion process with more complete and efficient combustion. With global efforts to reduce NOx formation in energy generation, combustion staging strategies like Rich Quench Lean (RQL), Lean-Premixed (LPM), and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) have gained more attention in research. The major challenge that exists in the research sector is the ability to evaluate and further develop these techniques at a fundamental level. …

Characterization And Experimental Study Of Ammonia-Hydrogen Flames Inside A Toroidal Jet-Stirred Reactor At Atmospheric Conditions, Oli Marquez Valenzuela
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Due to rising concerns about global surface temperatures and carbon emissions, there has been an increased interest in studying alternative fuels. Ammonia and hydrogen are fuels with the potential to replace general biofuels, hydrocarbons, and sustainable aviation fuels, as they do not contain any carbon, eliminating carbon emissions. However, they are both difficult to work with. Hydrogen has great combustion characteristics such as low ignition energy, high flame speed and lower heating value. However, it is volatile and difficult to store, requiring it to be compressed to high pressure or cooled to incredibly low temperatures. Ammonia can be used as …

Background: Microgravity exposure alters cardiovascular loading, yet its impact on left atrial flow dynamics and thrombotic risk remains poorly understood. This study investigates how spaceflight-relevant microgravity-induced changes in cardiac outflow affect left atrial hemodynamics in healthy individuals and patients with atrial fibrillation.
Methods: Patient-specific left atrial models were generated for three healthy individuals and three AF patients. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using each patient’s baseline mitral outflow waveform and two modified waveforms representing short- and long-duration post-flight cardiac loading changes derived from echocardiographic observations. Hemodynamic metrics included left atrial velocity, time averaged wall shear stress, oscillatory shear …
Adaptive Machine Learning Framework For Microstructural Optimization And Mechanical Performance Prediction In Steels, Henry Adekola Haffner
Adaptive Machine Learning Framework For Microstructural Optimization And Mechanical Performance Prediction In Steels, Henry Adekola Haffner
Doctoral Dissertations
Evolution of microstructures, such as polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, bainite, and martensite, plays a pivotal role in determining the final microstructural and mechanical properties of steel products. Given the established inter-relationship between processing parameters, microstructure, properties, and performance, precise control of phase transformation is essential to achieve pre-determined properties. To understand transformation routes in different steel grades, time-temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams are necessary and can be described using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation and Scheil’s additivity rule. This study presents a comprehensive computational framework for predicting and optimizing microstructure and mechanical properties in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) using adaptive machine …

We present the mathematical construction of a deployable flasher pattern with near-uniform nonzero thickness in the deployed form and efficient face-to-face packing in the stowed form. We demonstrate its fabrication, deployment, and stowage. The results facilitate the design and manufacture of deployable systems with panels whose substantial thickness is dictated by the end application, with particular utility for space systems.
Beyond The Meter: Frameworks For Evaluating The Broad Spectrum Of Microgrid Benefits, Elias Henderson
Beyond The Meter: Frameworks For Evaluating The Broad Spectrum Of Microgrid Benefits, Elias Henderson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Community-scale microgrids can create a range of social benefits. These include resilient electricity, cleaner air, decarbonization, and economic development, alongside more qualitative values like energy sovereignty and community self-determination. Many such benefits, however, are illegible to California’s market and regulatory frameworks. This thesis traces this disconnect, with particular attention to grid-edge communities in Northern California.
Microgrid benefits are classified as monetized, modeled, or incommensurable according to their inclusion/exclusion in existing regulatory and revenue mechanisms. To explore each category, a mixed-methods analytic approach is employed, pairing Tribal and stakeholder interviews with the development of a microgrid valuation calculator. This tool is …

The environmental benefits of electric vehicle (EV) adoption depend on more than replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric powertrains. EV adoption reshapes electricity demand, interacts with regional generation mixes, and influences travel behavior and congestion, creating a coupled transportation-energy system in which vehicle and power-plant emissions must be evaluated together. This dissertation develops machine-learning frameworks for predicting energy consumption and emissions from vehicles and power grids under rising EV adoption. The first component forecasts grid emissions from EV charging. Using simulation data from NREL's Cambium database, a Prophet-based time-series framework predicts carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane emission rates …

The Efficacy Of Hybrid Manufacturing For High Stress Automotive Parts, Logan Trimmer
Harrisburg University Other Works
Presentation covering the broad strokes of the project. The goal was to prove the viability of hybrid/additive manufacturing for high stress automotive applications. This project focused on recreating a piston from an old engine to examine if hybrid manufacturing could be used for such applications. On a small scale, hybrid manufacturing was able to be more cost effective if the costs of the equipment and electricity were ignored. The decision to ignore those costs came from the inability to find accurate prices for industrial casting.

The Efficacy Of Hybrid Manufacturing For High Stress Automotive Components, Logan Trimmer
Harrisburg University Other Works
The goal of this research was to establish the viability of using hybrid manufacturing for automotive applications. By verifying that high-stress components can be created, it can be assumed that any other lower stress part could be made to match the strength requirements. A limiting factor of adoption for hybrid manufacturing is how new the technology is. Studies on time and cost were performed allowing for comparisons with traditional manufacturing technologies (casting, forging, milling) used in automotive applications. This research utilized a Haas Automation UMC750 5-axis CNC mill with a Meltio laser wire direct energy deposition attachment. Fusion 360 was …
Numerical Simulation Of Micro-Cutting Processes For The Estimation Of Material Fracture Toughness, Juan J. Lainez
Numerical Simulation Of Micro-Cutting Processes For The Estimation Of Material Fracture Toughness, Juan J. Lainez
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Accurate determination of plane-strain fracture toughness is essential for structural integrity assessments of engineering components, yet conventional ASTM standardized testing methods require large, notched specimens that are impractical in many industrial and research contexts. This thesis presents a finite element method-based approach for estimating the mode I plane-strain fracture toughness of engineering materials from orthogonal micro-cutting simulations if the continuum damage mechanics-based fracture locus is calibrated. This method will eliminate the need for pre-cracked specimens while maintaining physically grounded fracture mechanics principles. The methodology applies to the Atkins energy-based cutting force model, in which the depth-independent intercept of the specific …

Temperature And Speciation Measurements Of Aluminum-Laden Detonation Flows Via A Three-Color Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopic Sensor, Marc B. Etienne
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Tunable diode lasers are widely used and are known to be great options for continuous wave lasing applications. Because of their stability and spectral selectivity, they have become an important diagnostic tool for modern combustion research. Previous combustion research, particularly those focused on solid and hybrid rocket systems, have shown that the interaction of aluminum with a reacting flow can greatly affect the dynamics and the thermochemical properties of the surrounding gas, therefore understanding the effects of aluminum-laden flows is critical for the advancement of these propulsion systems. However, due to the high degree of optical interference, high temperatures, and …

Photothermal Excitation And Optical Interferometric Readout Of Mos2 Nanomechanical Resonators, Sadia Afrin
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) due to their exceptional mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. Among these materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted considerable interest for nanomechanical resonator applications because of its low mass density, high mechanical strength, and semiconducting nature. This thesis presents the fabrication, theoretical modeling, and experimental characterization of suspended MoS2 drumhead resonators. The devices were fabricated by mechanically exfoliating MoS2 flakes from bulk MoS2 crystals and transferring selected flakes onto pre-patterned substrates using a dry-transfer process. Mechanical resonance was excited through photothermal actuation using a modulated blue laser, while device …

Ammonia’s (NH3) properties as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier, its phase characteristics, and its wide global infrastructure present a solid case as a potential surrogate for carbon-based aviation fuels. Delivering a zero-emission NH3-based engine requires careful integration and optimization of the combustor and thermal management systems, a process that requires high-fidelity chemical reacting models experimentally validated through the use of simplified combustors. This study investigates NH3 fundamental combustion characteristics at conditions relevant to aviation gas turbines using a newly constructed toroidal jet-stirred reactor (TJSR) facility. Lean blow-off (LBO) experiments were carried out for NH3 blends …
The Dynamics Of Near-Limit Detonation Waves For Hypersonic Propulsion, Liliana Berson
The Dynamics Of Near-Limit Detonation Waves For Hypersonic Propulsion, Liliana Berson
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The usage of detonation waves in hypersonic propulsion engines has seen substantial advancement in recent decades. The near-limit transition and failure process are key in these applications controlling the operability regime. The common cellular propagation of detonation waves fails in the near limit leading eventually to a singular transverse shock instability. The local dynamics of the wave causing this transition and the details of this singular instability remain a challenging question. These dynamics are examined in a fully automated detonation experiment using ultra-high-speed diagnostics and statistical analysis. Hydrocarbon fuel–oxidizer mixtures with nitrogen dilution are used to explore transition behavior over …

An Algorithmic Framework For Polyhedral Gravity Modeling And Trajectory Propagation Near Small Bodies, Micah S. Boudreau
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and other irregular celestial bodies have become increasingly significant targets for scientific investigation and space mission development due to their relevance to resource utilization, origins-of-life studies, planetary defense, and understanding of early solar system formation. As launch costs continue to decline, missions such as NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker, OSIRIS-REx and JAXA’s Hayabusa series demonstrate the expanding feasibility of detailed small body exploration. Despite this growing interest, most standard astrodynamics tools are not designed to model the complex, highly irregular gravitational fields that are a signature of small bodies. Such limitations pose challenges for trajectory design, navigation, and control …

Detonation-based propulsion systems are of significant interest owing to their high thermodynamic efficiency, rapid energy release, and favorable entropy production relative to deflagration-based systems. Liquid fuels offer practical advantages in storage and volumetric energy density, making them attractive candidates for next-generation detonation engines. This dissertation investigates the detonability characteristics of liquid hydrocarbon fuel clouds through three interconnected studies conducted in a turbulent shock-tube environment using high-speed imaging and pressure diagnostics. The first study maps the detonability limits of monodisperse n-dodecane clouds by systematically varying droplet diameter (5-50 μm) and O₂/N₂ oxidizer composition at equivalence ratios spanning ϕ = 0.8-2.0. Results …
Enhanced Atomization And Combustion In Subsonic Ljic Systems Using Ultrasonically Driven Solid Obstructions, Daniel Sebastian Cruz
Enhanced Atomization And Combustion In Subsonic Ljic Systems Using Ultrasonically Driven Solid Obstructions, Daniel Sebastian Cruz
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The liquid fueling methods used in aircraft propulsion have undergone extensive optimization, with Liquid Jets in Crossflow (LJIC) emerging as a simple yet effective injection scheme. LJIC enables sufficient fuel mass flow rates and penetration for high-speed operation, however fuel trajectory and droplet size remain highly sensitive to crossflow conditions. As a result, wide flight envelopes introduce variability in atomization, leading to unsteady combustion performance. Recent work has incorporated a pintile, a solid obstruction placed in the path of the fuel jet, to redistribute momentum and reduce trajectory variability across varying flow conditions. While this approach improves trajectory uniformity, it …
High Intensity Ablation By Laser Filaments At Standoff Distances, Owen Thome
High Intensity Ablation By Laser Filaments At Standoff Distances, Owen Thome
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
The high-power densities delivered to a target material by a laser allow for melting and vaporization to occur, a process called laser ablation. At higher intensities, plasma formation occurs and more complex material removal mechanisms take place. As laser power increases, nonlinear effects occur during propagation. One such effect, Kerr self-focusing, leads to beam collapse and ionization, resulting in a channel of plasma and region of high intensity light referred to as a laser filament. Filaments carry intensities on the order of 1013 W/cm2 to significant distances without the use of large-scale focusing optics. Laser filament ablation is …

This study investigated the failure process and major contributing factors of the north pier at Hongdo, located off the southwestern coast of Korea, which has experienced repeated damage and a history of repair and reinforcement. The 2016 damage event was selected for detailed analysis. Because direct wave observations were not available at the time of the damage, the offshore wind field was reconstructed using WRF, and the wave conditions were estimated using WAM and SWAN. The waves in front of the pier during the damage event were estimated to have been lower than the design wave adopted for the reinforcement …
Experimental Investigation Into The Effects Of Air Staging On Fouling In A Fixed-Bed Biomass Combustor, Akram Elsebaie
Experimental Investigation Into The Effects Of Air Staging On Fouling In A Fixed-Bed Biomass Combustor, Akram Elsebaie
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Biomass offers significant potential as a sustainable and renewable substitute for fossil fuels in energy generation, playing a critical role in the reduction of global warming. However, despite its environmental benefits, biomass combustion faces persistent operational challenges, particularly fouling, which reduces efficiency and increases maintenance costs. Although fouling mechanisms have been studied in various combustion systems, there is limited research which addresses its formation and behaviour in fixed-bed biomass combustors under different air staging conditions. This research investigates fouling behaviour in a counter-current combustor, focusing on the influence of design (secondary air location), operational (air staging flowrates between the primary …

Missions such as NASA’s Artemis and SpaceX’s Starship aspire towards creating permanent settlements beyond Earth. In order to achieve this goal, it must be considered that the gravity present on planetary surfaces such as the Moon (0.165 g) and Mars (0.378 g) may be insufficient to support human physiology for long term habitation. On near-Earth missions, issues such as muscular atrophy, neuro-ocular changes, cardiopulmonary variations, and bone mineral density loss have been observed proportional to the duration spent in microgravity. Further studies have suggested that the severity of these conditions scales linearly with decreasing gravity, meaning that astronaut health can …
