Finite Element Stress Analysis Of Engine Piston, Anil Nanalal Mistry May 1990

Finite Element Stress Analysis Of Engine Piston, Anil Nanalal Mistry

Theses

In this analysis, Ford Motor Company's, modular engine seriespiston was selected for the analysis purposes. The engine has a capacity of 4.6 liter, V-8 cylinder and with 2 valves. The piston is made of aluminum alloy material Z-16-T6. A three-dimensional finite element model was created to analyze the piston. The model, which contains only the quarter section of the piston due to loading symmetry and geometry, was used to calculate operating temperatures and the corresponding thermal expansion. Operating stresses due to thermal and mechanical loads were also calculated. The accuracy of the model was verified by material data published in the …

Selection Of Master Degrees Of Freedom In Model Reduction Techniques, Yixing Qi

Theses

Based on the model reduction technique called SEREP (System Equivalent Reduction Expansion Process), systematic ways to select the master degrees of freedom (the degrees of freedom kept in the reduced model) are developed and their usefulness is demonstrated by the examples. The following two criteria are ' developed for two specific objectives.

When we need to identify the response of the full model from the response of the reduced model (usually obtained from the experiments,) we hope to reduce the estimation error between the estimated response and the actual one. We also hope to keep the points which will have …

Computer Data Acquisition, Control, And Analysis For The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga's Internal Combustion Engine Labratory, Ahmad Noureddine

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

For any data acquisition instrumentation, it is essential to have a voltage or current signal output from any transducer that needs to be monitored.Nine OMEGA thermocouples were installed on the Ford engine-Megatech dynamometer system to monitor the temperature of the exhaust gases at different locations and the coolants entering and leaving the dynamometer and the radiator. Those thermocouples have an output signal of O - 55 mv.The TESCOM gas analyzer system measures the concentrations of the different gases present in the exhaust system of the engine and produces an analog output signal (0 - 100 mv) that is used for data …

Eigensensitivity Analysis For Space Structures With Applications In Design Optimization, Sean Patrick Kenny Apr 1990

Eigensensitivity Analysis For Space Structures With Applications In Design Optimization, Sean Patrick Kenny

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Eigensensitivity analysis is concerned with the rates of changes of eigenvalues and eigenvectors with respect to design variables. Eigensolutions of space structures are found to display four distinct characteristics, three of which are related to various types of repeated eigenvalues. This study will address three cases of the real symmetric structural eigenvalue problem. The three cases that will be considered are: distinct eigenvalues, repeated eigenvalues with distinct first eigenvalue derivatives, and repeated eigenvalues with infinitely repeating eigenvalue derivatives. Analytic formulations for eigenvalue/ vector derivatives will be presented for each of the three cases. The directional differentiability of eigenvalues for the …

The Influence Of Payload Dynamics On Trajectory Tracking Performance Of Robot Manipulator, Atul G. Kelkar Apr 1990

The Influence Of Payload Dynamics On Trajectory Tracking Performance Of Robot Manipulator, Atul G. Kelkar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Future space mission plans call for extensive use of remote manipulator systems for tasks such as assembly of lunar vehicles or space station modules, servicing of satellites, etc. These tasks demand very high precision end-effector motion control. Methods for compensating manipulator dynamics to achieve better trajectory tracking performance have been investigated by many researchers. Still, it is not always clear whether the added complexity of dynamic compensation is warranted for a given system. As an aid in evaluating when dynamic compensation is required, this thesis presents a method for the determination of maximum endpoint tracking error due to uncompensated inertial …

A Systematic Procedure For The Analysis And Design Of Deployable Space Structures, Praveen Kumar Apr 1990

A Systematic Procedure For The Analysis And Design Of Deployable Space Structures, Praveen Kumar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An integrated graph theory and a symmetry-based approach have been developed for the type synthesis of deployable truss structures. Using this systematic approach, a bay of a deployable structure may be looked upon as being built around an axis or a plane of symmetry, including anti-symmetry. By providing a fictitious joint along this axis, the problem of structural design and analysis can be reduced to the study of one plane or face of the given structure. Each face is considered to be an assemblage of structural links connected by joints which form a closed kinematic chain. The conventional graph representation …

Nonproportionally Loaded Steel Beam-Columns And Flexibly-Connected Nonsway Frames, Siva Prasad Darbhamulla Apr 1990

Nonproportionally Loaded Steel Beam-Columns And Flexibly-Connected Nonsway Frames, Siva Prasad Darbhamulla

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical study of the inelastic stability of nonproportionally loaded steel beam-columns and flexibly-connected frames is conducted. Specifically, solution techniques are formulated to predict the nonlinear behavior of cross sections, spatial beam-columns, and nonsway plane frames under the combined influence of imperfections, flexible connections, and nonproportional loads. A set of new inelastic slope-deflection equations for imperfect members are derived and their use illustrated through in-depth studies of flexibly-connected portal and two-bay two-story frames. These equations are derived from a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The member studies are carried out using a second-order finite-difference solution to a set of …

Analytical And Experimental Study Of Robotic Peg-In-Hole Insertion, Yilun Jia

Theses

A mathematical model of robotic peg-in-hole insertion, which relates insertion force and moment to manipulator compliance and geometric constraints, is presented. Based on this model, the effects of manipulator compliance and geometric and positional parameters on the insertion are studied. The complete expressions for determining the insertion forces and moment as well as the peg kinematics are derived. The study is helpful to reducing insertion force and moment and avoiding possible jamming during the insertion process. The model is verified experimentally on the IBM 7540 robot.

Ultrasonic Measurement Of The Geometric Parameters Of Gaseous Voids In Low Gravity Fluid Containers, A. T. Patten, William W. Durgin Jan 1990

Ultrasonic Measurement Of The Geometric Parameters Of Gaseous Voids In Low Gravity Fluid Containers, A. T. Patten, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

A demonstration system for the ultrasonic gauging of fluids in low-gravity has been designed and tested. For purposes of simplification, it was assumed that vapor within a liquid container in low-gravity would form a spherical bubble which would float freely in the container. The project was designed to show that ultrasonic techniques could be used to determine the geometry of the resulting sphere given a worst-case transducer arrangement. The motivation was to simplify transducer mounting requirements so that propellant or other storage vessels could be fitted with ultrasonic gauging systems with a single or perhaps a few transducer penetrations. Data …

Economics Of Interceptor Drains : A Case Study, Andrew Bathgate, Ian Evans Jan 1990

Economics Of Interceptor Drains : A Case Study, Andrew Bathgate, Ian Evans

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

This case study determines the most likely rate of return to capital invested in constructing seepage interceptor drains to reduce the effect of waterlogging on crop and pasture yields. The analysis of a farm in the Denbarker region, west of Albany, determined what increases were needed in pasture growth to justify the cost of constructing drains across four adjacent paddocks. The benefits of changing rotations to include lupins were also determined, as growing lupins was unprofitable before the construction of drains.

Robust Nonlinear Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For Direct-Drive Robotic Applications, N. Hemati, J. S. Thorp, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1990

Robust Nonlinear Control Of Brushless Dc Motors For Direct-Drive Robotic Applications, N. Hemati, J. S. Thorp, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The control problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) for direct-drive robotic applications is considered. In order to guarantee the high-performance operation of BLDCMs in such applications, the effects of reluctance variations and magnetic saturation are accounted for in the model. Such a BLDCM model constitutes a highly coupled and nonlinear dynamic system. Using the transformation theory of nonlinear systems, a feedback control law, which is shown to compensate for the system nonlinearities, is derived. Conditions under which such a control law is possible are presented. The need for the derivation of explicit commutation strategies is eliminated, resulting in reduction …

A Complete Model Characterization Of Brushless Dc Motors, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1990

A Complete Model Characterization Of Brushless Dc Motors, N. Hemati, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The modeling problem associated with brushless DC motors (BLDCMs) with nonuniform air gaps which operate in a range where magnetic saturation may exist is addressed. The mathematical model, includes the effects of reluctance variations and magnetic saturation to guarantee proper modeling of the system. An experimental procedure is developed and implemented in a laboratory environment to identify the electromagnetic characteristics of a BLDCM in the presence of magnetic saturation. It is demonstrated that the modeling problem associated with this class of BLDCM can be formulated in terms of mathematically modeling a set of multidimensional surfaces corresponding to the electromagnetic torque …
