The Point-Line Dimension: A Way Of Looking At Some Aspects Of The Referential System In Indonesian, H. Bambang Kaswanti Purwo
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "There exist, in Indonesian, certain pairs of forms where, although each member of the pair can be given the same gloss in a language such as English, there is a contrast in meaning between the members of the pairs not easily captured in simple glosses. These distinctions turn out to be difficult to grasp for a person who is not an Indonesian."
Texmelucan Zapotec Suprasegmental Phonology, Charles H. Speck
Texmelucan Zapotec Suprasegmental Phonology, Charles H. Speck
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Speaking of general characteristics of tone languages, William S-Y-Wang (1967) points out some basic differences between the types of tone found in language areas of the world. Among other things, he notes that for some languages tone functions primarily to make lexical distinctions with the Sino Tibetan family being cited as examples of this type. For other languages tone functions primarily on the grammatical level. Otomanguean languages are cited as examples of this type. In light of this fact, it is not surprising that two types of tone perturbation need to be distinguished in Texmelucan Zapotec, hereafter …
A Phonological And Morphological Analysis Of Two-Year Old Children's Utterances Of Final /S/ And /Z/ In Nouns, Janice Brewer
A Phonological And Morphological Analysis Of Two-Year Old Children's Utterances Of Final /S/ And /Z/ In Nouns, Janice Brewer
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine, from a phonological and morphological point of view, two-year old children's utterances of final /s/ and final /z/ in singular (CVC) and plural (CVCC) forms.
The subjects were 32 two-year old children who attended day-care centers. There were 13 males and 19 females, ranging in age from 26 months to 36 months, with an average age of 29 months.
In a 16 item test, each of the 32 children named eight singular nouns (/bʌs/, /haus/, /fers/, /maus/, /nouz/, /tʃiz/, /rouz/, /hous/) and eight plural nouns (/kʌps/, /hæts/, /keɪks/, /sɑks/, /bɔlz/, /gʌnz/, /bɛdz/, …
The Functions Of Reported Speech In Discourse, Mildred Lucille Larson
The Functions Of Reported Speech In Discourse, Mildred Lucille Larson
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The study of the functions of reported speech makes five major contributions to the current literature on discourse. (l) It highlights the multifunctional characteristics of reported speech; (2) it correlates these functions with discourse types; (3) it points out the necessity to separate the situational features from the deep structure organizational features and relates both to surface structure discourse types; (4) it defines more clearly the nature of dialogue discourse, that of a portmanteau realization of deep structure narrative and repartee; and (5) it shows for the first time within the stratificational grammar framework that contrastive discourse structures occur both …

An Introduction To The Akawaio And Arekuna Peoples, Walter F. Edwards, Amerindian Languages Project, University Of Guyana
An Introduction To The Akawaio And Arekuna Peoples, Walter F. Edwards, Amerindian Languages Project, University Of Guyana
English Faculty Research Publications
The present monograph focusses on the Akawaio and Arekuna tribes who inhabit the Upper Mazaruni area of Guyana. We have tried in this effort to provide the kind of basic cultural and linguistic information about Akawaios and Arekunas that non-Amerindian people including teachers, administrators and employers should find valuable and we have tried to present these ideas in as non-technical a style as possible. Section II of this work is devoted to lists of words which we think would help Coastlanders and other non-Amerindians to begin to interact socially with Akawaios and Arekunas. In the early chapters we have presented …

The Verbal System In Godié: A Daughter Dependency Approach, Lynell Marchese
The Verbal System In Godié: A Daughter Dependency Approach, Lynell Marchese
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "The goal of this paper is to describe the verbal system of Godié, a Kru language spoken in southwest Ivory Coast, within the framework of daughter dependency grammar. This model has been recently developed by the British linguist, R. A. Hudson. The model could be called "generative" since structures are built up through the application of various sets of rules. This type of grammar varies considerably, however, from other generative grammars in that it generates only one structure for each construction (rather than the traditional deep and surface structures, with several intermediate structures in between). Rather than …

Suggested Activities For Using The Newspaper In The Esl Classroom, Carol Gordenstein
Suggested Activities For Using The Newspaper In The Esl Classroom, Carol Gordenstein
MA TESOL Collection
The following project is designed to help teachers introduce the newspaper into the ESL classroom by means of specific activities which have relevance in language teaching. These activities contain both linguistic and cultural content, and can be implemented for various levels. The collection of ideas is grouped according to particular news articles, with a brief description of each type of feature, an example of the feature, and a list of specific and sometimes more general activities related to the feature. This project can be used as a supplement to regular language teaching procedures, and it is hoped that it will …
Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini
Tres Cuentos, Beatriz Cespedes De Fantini

Teachers of Spanish are often concerned primarily with the mechanical aspects of language. A student's knowledge of the language is principally determined by his mastery of vocabulary, correct verb forms, etc. By devoting so much concern to the purely linguistic aspects of communication, other important dimensions have often been ignored; for example, the "appropriateness" of language use in a given social context. Once this dimension is considered, it becomes clear that besides knowledge of the mechanical construct of language, the student must also acquire knowledge of what language choices are appropriate for each social situation.
In this work, three original …

The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo
MA TESOL Collection
Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

National Michigan Test Score Improvement Averages For The International Students Of English At The School For International Training Of Ten Programs From January 1974 Through June 1976, Robert J. Thomas
MA TESOL Collection
This project contains student data, consisting of nationality, test scores, and age, from ten programs of International Students of English at the School for International Training. The data has been calculated to produce national test score averages which are helpful when comparing the various national and language group abilities of performance on the Michigan Test. In general this material supports the hypothesis that the closer a student's native language is to English linguistically the greater his score improvement will be on the Michigan Test.

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel

Teachers of English are constantly seeking new and better materials to aid their students in learning the English language. Sometimes these materials are in the form of newspaper or magazine articles and advertisements to show how a grammatical pattern studied in the textbook is actually applied in the culture. Sometimes these materials are in the form of cultural artifacts such as clothing items or eating utensils. And very often these materials are in the form of pictures and photographs to give the student a visual representation of new words or grammatical patterns. Whatever the material, the teacher is constantly looking …
