A Diachronic Explanation For The Origin Of Ovs In Some Carib Languages, Desmond C. Derbyshire Jan 1979

A Diachronic Explanation For The Origin Of Ovs In Some Carib Languages, Desmond C. Derbyshire

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Derbyshire and Pullum (1979, this volume) report on the evidence they have accumulated during the past two years showing the likely existence of twelve languages with object-initial basic order (OVS or OSV). Such languages are contrary to what had been generally predicted in the literature on word order typology until 1977. All twelve languages are found in what might broadly be termed the Amazon basin of South America. Seven of the eight OVS languages belong to the Carib family.

This paper suggests a possible diachronic explanation for the emergence of OVS as a basic order in Carib languages. It takes …

Object Initial Languages, Desmond C. Derbyshire, Geoffrey K. Pullum Jan 1979

Object Initial Languages, Desmond C. Derbyshire, Geoffrey K. Pullum

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The purpose of the present paper is to present some facts that have come to our attention recently concerning a number of Amerindian languages which we believe do exhibit object-initial basic orders. The languages we shall discuss belong to South American Indian groups which are known to have suffered more or less catatrophic decline in numbers due to the onslaught of European settlement in the New World over the past five hundred years (see Hemming 1978). Since the historical accident of European colonial expansionism has had such a devastating effect in this case, linguists might be well …

Grammatical Relations In Universal Grammar, Donald G. Frantz Jan 1979

Grammatical Relations In Universal Grammar, Donald G. Frantz

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "[W]e shall look at a number of recurring language phenomena involving grammatical relations. Because most of these allow a universal formulation only in terms of relational networks rather than linear or constituent structures, we shall make use of Postal and Perlmutter's promising framework, generally referred to as Relational Grammar (RG)."

Reduplication And Accent In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett Jan 1979

Reduplication And Accent In Southeastern Tepehuan, Elizabeth R. Willett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In the early stages of analysis, Southeastern Tepehuan (SET) vowel length appeared to be conditioned by accent. Although accent fell in a majority of words on closed syllables, there were so many exceptions that no general statement could be made. Thus accent was relegated to being a feature of the underlying character of roots. Reduplicated forms, however, were a confusing body of unpredictable accent; if accent were phonemic, why did it occur on the root syllable of some forms, and on the reduplicated syllable in others? Some plurals were judged irregular because they seemed to lose or …

The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck Aug 1978

The Phonology Of Texmelucan Zapotec Verb Irregularity, Charles H. Speck

Theses and Dissertations

The phonological rules governing Texmelucan Zapotec verb allomorphy are presented here as part of the phonological component of a generative grammar of the type conceived of by Chomsky and Halle but modified by Stampe, Rhodes and others. This modified theoretical framework has been referred to as natural phonology. Basic to the theory of natural phonology is Stampe's observation that two distinctive types of phonological principles operate in natural languages: natural processes which are innate and rules which are learned. The natural phonemic level is seen to relate to these principles.

In section 1: Lower Level Phonology, those principles which operate …

Aspects Of Seri Phonology, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1978

Aspects Of Seri Phonology, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In the following sections I will discuss the presence of the surface segments W, kw, Xw, ŋ, and nasalization, and the status of the phoneme /w/ in present-day Seri. I will also discuss other prominent aspects of Seri phonology, especially those features in which this analysis differs from that of Moser and Moser 1965."

Notes On Diuxi Mixtec Tone, John P. Daly Jan 1978

Notes On Diuxi Mixtec Tone, John P. Daly

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "In this paper I give a brief description of a reanalysis of the tone system of Diuxi Mixtec previously analyzed by Eunice Pike and Joy Oram (1976). Their analysis is heavily influenced by their conception of probably phonetic manifestations of tone, whereas my analysis is more influenced by morphophonemic considerations. Giving more attention to morphophonemic considerations in determining tone phonemes makes possible a simpler account of the morphophonemics of tone. This account, however, is not at the expense of phonetic simplicity but is compatible with a phonetically reasonable and relatively simple account of allphonic processes."

The Modalis Case In Iñupiat, Wolf Seiler Jan 1978

The Modalis Case In Iñupiat, Wolf Seiler

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Eskimo has a set of six post-positions which traditionally have been called a "case system" by Eskimologists. It is my purpose to demonstrate the uses of one of these, the modalis case, and to interpret them within the framework of Relational Grammar."

A Handbook For Teaching Technical English, Kathleen Bogue Caissie Jan 1978

A Handbook For Teaching Technical English, Kathleen Bogue Caissie

MA TESOL Collection

In this paper are discussed, first, the unique problems facing the teacher who finds himself teaching technical English. Second, ways in which that teacher can prepare himself to most effectively deal with these problems (used here in the sense of tasks to be mastered) are offered, together with practical strategies for establishing and maintaining his professional and emotional equilibrium. Finally, specific suggestions are made for presenting technical terminology to ESL students, as well as improving their general English language proficiency.

In addition, three appendices are provided. The first delineates examples of the special problems connected with teaching technical English. The …

A Resource And Idea Book ( For Teachers Of English To Speakers Of Other Languages ), Eleanor C. Boone, Rick Gildea, Pat Moran

MA TESOL Collection

This is a resource manual for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. Those teachers who should find the manual most useful are Peace Corps EFL teachers in host country secondary schools.

This manual is divided into two parts. The first part consists of seven chapters, the first six of which deal specifically with resources (teaching ideas, techniques and suggestions) for HOW to present, develop and reinforce Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing and Conversation. There is an additional chapter on games as techniques for reviewing the language skills already taught.

The second part of the manual, the appendices, contains …

Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen Jan 1978

Charts That Show Basic Transformations In English, Lawrence Fuller Allen

MA TESOL Collection

This project is a teaching tool to be used in the ESL classroom. It consists of six large (30" x 20") multicolored charts. Each charts focuses on a particular "operator" verb in English ("be," "do," or the modals) and shows the role the operator plays in the grammatical transformations of question formation and negation. The student can actually see how the same sentence changes from the statement to the question form and from affirmative to negative. In addition to the charts themselves, the project includes a written description of the charts, suggestions for using them in the classroom, and tables …

The Cultural Problems Encountered In Teaching Basic English To Russian Jew Refugees As An Initial Step To Entering An English Speaking Society, James Edwin Traver Jan 1978

The Cultural Problems Encountered In Teaching Basic English To Russian Jew Refugees As An Initial Step To Entering An English Speaking Society, James Edwin Traver

MA TESOL Collection

The Organizzazione Rieducazione Tecnia in Rome, Italy offers English language instruction to Russian Jew refugees who for one reason or another wish to obtain visas to an English speaking country. The students are in a transitional phase in their lives; they have left their country of birth and haven't yet been accepted into another country of their choice. This creates special needs in regard to language acquisition. They need survival skills to help them make this transition and they need to gain an appreciation of English speaking cultures.

During the summer of 1977, I taught and observed classes at this …

Pointing The Way, Jennifer Upton-Doty Jan 1978

Pointing The Way, Jennifer Upton-Doty

MA TESOL Collection

"Pointing the Way" looks at reading and writing activities and how they are introduced and worked with in the initial lessons of a beginning English class, using Silent Way charts. The first sections deal with why it is important to work with reading and writing skills in the first stages of learning English as a foreign language. A section of lesson plans follows, demonstrating how the activities are integrated into the lessons. The Activity sections are last and include activities to use at the beginning level and after.

Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch Jan 1978

Methods And Materials For Esl Literacy, Ann Ebersole Strauch

MA TESOL Collection

Literacy education for adolescents and adults has been a perplexing problem for ESL teachers, who are generally unprepared for this specific type of instruction. Materials designed for native-English speakers are not suitable for ESL literacy instruction, and teacher-training institutions are not providing preparation for ESL literacy for prospective ESL teachers. Furthemore, very little research has been done on ESL literacy. In spite of this dearth of information and lack of suitable didactic materials available, substantial numbers of nonliterate students are seeking ESL instruction. This thesis addresses the need for methods and materials specifically intended for ESL literacy instruction.

Visual Developmental Dyslexia In Children (Specific Language Disability), Sue Golden Jan 1978

Visual Developmental Dyslexia In Children (Specific Language Disability), Sue Golden

MA TESOL Collection

Developmental Dyslexia is a disorder manifested by difficulty in learning to read, speak, and write, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity. Although this disorder affects approximately 10% of all school children, it remains unknown to many teachers, especially those in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the nature of this disorder and the current remedial methods and techniques being used. It also points out some of the discrepancies that exist between theory (the treatment that a child would ideally receive), and reality; this is …
