“Pick A Card, Any Card”: Learning To Deceive And Conceal – With Care, Brian Rappert Jan 2021

“Pick A Card, Any Card”: Learning To Deceive And Conceal – With Care, Brian Rappert

Secrecy and Society

Because of the asymmetries in knowledge regarding the underlying hidden mechanisms as well as because of the importance of intentional deception, entertainment magic is often presented as an exercise in power, manipulation, and control. This article challenges such portrayals and through doing so common presumptions about how secrets are kept. It does so through recounting the experiences of the author as a beginner learning a craft. Regard for the choices and tensions associated with the accomplishment of mutually recognized deception in entertainment magic are marshalled to consider how it involves ‘reciprocal action’ between the audience and the performer. Attending to …

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman Jan 2021

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman

Theses and Dissertations

Traces of the ancient Egyptian language can still be observed in modern Egyptian colloquial Arabic, which is the form of Arabic adopted by Egyptians as their native spoken language. This thesis aims to better understand the ancient Egyptian language through the analysis of its lexical survivals. It presents a new methodological approach to utilize ancient Egyptian lexical survivals as a source to study the ancient Egyptian language. A selected set of fifty-five ancient Egyptian lexical survivals was computed by matching ancient Egyptian and documented Egyptian colloquial Arabic words having the same semantic fields. While it was generally assumed that the …

Allophonie Et Plurilinguisme À L’École Française : Quand Dire, C’Est Déjà Traduire, Matthieu Marchadour Jan 2021

Allophonie Et Plurilinguisme À L’École Française : Quand Dire, C’Est Déjà Traduire, Matthieu Marchadour

Al-Kīmiyā

In this article, inspired from our researches in sociolinguistics, we suggest that translation is a permanent process which is not only linked to switching from one language to another, but is also linked to the action of speaking itself. “Allophone pupils”, foreigners in a sense that they don’t speak French, are for the teachers we interviewed a kind of limit which could to be used to question the boundaries between languages and the understanding of otherness. Thus, plurilingualism and translation would not only concern foreign people who speak different languages, but also people who think speak the same language, because …

Le Phénomène Baudelaire Dans La Traduction, Ana-Maria Antonesei

Al-Kīmiyā

The study entitled Le phénomène Baudelaire dans la traduction (The Baudelaire phenomenon in translation) will be focused on the (re)translation of Charles Baudelaire’s work in Romanian, a phenomenon that should be investigated in the context of its production, including the socio-cultural environment. In the first part of the paper, we will try to sketch an answer concerning the impact of socio-cultural changes in translation, taking as support an overview on the translation’s history of Baudelaire in Romania. The second part will be dedicated to an investigation which had as purpose the examination of two research hypotheses: at the moment, translation …

"Have You Heard The News?" : Réflexions Sur La Traduction Du Bavardage Social Dans Le Roman « Emma » De Jane Austen, Klara Boestad Jan 2021

"Have You Heard The News?" : Réflexions Sur La Traduction Du Bavardage Social Dans Le Roman « Emma » De Jane Austen, Klara Boestad

Al-Kīmiyā

Translating a literary text is rarely limited to the translation of powerfully lyrical descriptions or soliloquys. In Jane Austen’s Emma, the translator is confronted with a narrative full of dialogue involving around a dozen central characters, all of whom spend most of their time happily exchanging and passing on pleasantries, news, and rumours. In this article, I will examine how gossiping has been studied in English-language and French-language literary and theoretical discourse, and whether potential metadiscursive discrepancies between the two language cultures may have an impact on published translations of the novel. We will support our argument with a …

Linguistique Juridique, Nada Kfouri Khoury Jan 2021

Linguistique Juridique, Nada Kfouri Khoury

Al-Kīmiyā

Gérard Cornu G. (2000). Linguistique juridique.

Linguistic Means Of Decolonization In Dubliners: Economic And Social Contexts, Souad Khalaf, Nadine Riachi Haddad Jan 2021

Linguistic Means Of Decolonization In Dubliners: Economic And Social Contexts, Souad Khalaf, Nadine Riachi Haddad

Al-Kīmiyā

Language has the power to produce implicit interpretations revealed through deeper analysis of what readers know and what characters say explicitly. Based on many characteristics such as social and economic contexts in which evolve characters in James Joyce’s Dubliners, different interpretations can be made. These will eventually demonstrate how language can decolonize people through their attempt to change or improve their economic and social status. Knowing such contexts also helps readers understand and learn that what characters say can carry a different meaning. In fact, context reflects what surrounds the characters and to which social or economic class they …

بصمة المترجم الذاتية انعكاس لشخصيته, Nabiha Maktabi, May Hobeika Haddad Jan 2021

بصمة المترجم الذاتية انعكاس لشخصيته, Nabiha Maktabi, May Hobeika Haddad

Al-Kīmiyā

This article explores the translator’s personality and its effect on the translation process which may be evident through the personal imprints he/she leaves on the text. Therefore, this subjective factor may affect his/her work and could appear through many personal characteristics that distinguish each translator from his/her peers, such as creativity and intuition. It also points out that it is difficult, or even impossible, for the translator to remain neutral. The article presents a small-scale empirical study that sought to establish a relationship between the types of participants’ personalities and the quality of their translation of one genre of text …

The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn Jan 2021

The Hermeneutic Interpretation And Understanding Of Meaning As The Precondition Of Phenomenological Cognition, And The Translational Transformation Of Reality, Simon Glynn

Al-Kīmiyā

Language is a system of signifiers, and of the concepts signified by them; concepts which, as de Saussure has shown, are delineated by the relations between the semiotic signs which constitute language. Thus, understood as a system of concepts, then as Wittgenstein, Quine and Derrida et al. recognized, language delineates the thoughts and understanding which it constitutes. Moreover, insofar as Hermeneutic Phenomenologists such as Heidegger recognized, and as cognitive psychologists such as Ames, and the Gestaltists, have demonstrated, our concepts mediate even our most basic perceptions, then language mediates, and thus delineates, our very experiences of the world also.
While …

Dom Juan « Travestito », Sanguineti Traducteur Et Le Déguisement D’Un Classique, Ludovica Maggi Jan 2021

Dom Juan « Travestito », Sanguineti Traducteur Et Le Déguisement D’Un Classique, Ludovica Maggi

Al-Kīmiyā

In this article, Edoardo Sanguineti’s translation of Molière’s Dom Juan serves as a case study for a reflection on the transformative action of translation, based on the interaction of three categories: hermeneutics, temporality and orality. More precisely, the translator’s interpretative horizon – here, specifically, his vision of theatre, translation and the classic – is presented as the source of a transformative handling of orality in translation. Sanguineti’s translative orality is described as disrupted and alienating. Paratext reveals the following influencing factors: a militant function attributed to language, a performative conception of scenic language, a theoretical approach to translation based on …

Traductologie Morale : Nouveau Champ Au Sein De La Traductologie Et Notions Y Rattachées, Rhéa Hleihel Jan 2021

Traductologie Morale : Nouveau Champ Au Sein De La Traductologie Et Notions Y Rattachées, Rhéa Hleihel

Al-Kīmiyā

In the context of the positive conditioning of the translator in conflict zones and the development of moral neuroscience, this article explains the generation of morality in the human brain and its ties with the imagination and the imaginary. Since moral dilemmas present often inconceivable and unrealistic situations, it is assumed that the reflection that these dilemmas generate, combined with practical application in the field, contributes to the moral and intellectual development of translators in conflict zones and broader areas of translation. This article first introduces the notion of the imaginary in the resolution of problems faced by these translators, …

L’Empathie : Une Composante Émotionnelle Impérative En Sous-Titrage, Mélissa Mouzannar, Gina Abou Fadel Saad

Al-Kīmiyā

The notion of empathy, so often used today in social psychology, has sparked an increasing interest in recent years among researchers in the field of translation studies. In this article, we will first examine the main historical antecedents of the concept of empathy and study how it manifests itself in translation in general and in subtitling in particular. We will then analyze how empathy, emotional intelligence, culture and translation are related as well as the fundamental role translators play in the translating process. Finally, we will investigate empathy and the translation of nonverbal cues in films.

The Roles And Functions Of Metaphors In The Malaysian Education Blueprint, Linggatharani Kesavan

Student Works (2020-2029)

Abstract: The Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013 - 2025) seeks to revamp the entire education system in Malaysia, targeting institutions of learning and the stakeholders via a series of radical changes in policy and governance. Upon scrutiny, it was also found to contain several metaphors that are carefully constructed and layered to deliver the contents to the readers. Metaphors have been identified as an effective linguistic tool that can be used to achieve cognitive, semantic and pragmatic goals effectively. More importantly, they are also found to create or alter realities and evoke powerful emotions. This research applies the Conceptual Metaphor Theory …

The Lexiculture Papers: English Words And Culture, Stephen Chrisomalis

Anthropology Faculty Research Publications

The Lexiculture Papers is a collection of scholarship on English words and culture. Each of the 62 chapters was originally authored by a student-scholar in the course, Language and Culture, at Wayne State University, between 2013 and 2020. Each chapter is a short social and historical description of a single English word in its cultural context, principally since 1800. Using a combination of historical linguistics, etymology, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis, the papers analyze English-speaking social life through the lens of specific words.

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos Jan 2021

Non-Vibrant Bilingual Rhotics In A Creole-Spanish Contact Scenario, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

World Languages & Cultures Department Publications

This sociolinguistic study examines the non-vibrant rhotic realizations produced in a bilingual Spanish variety spoken by Creole-Spanish speakers in the Archipelago of San Andres, Colombia. These bilingual rhotic realizations were compared with the languages in contact, the monolingual varieties, Spanish and Creole, in terms of the best acoustic predictors for discriminating between linguistic groups. A discriminant function analysis selected segmental duration and formant frequencies (F3 and F2) as the acoustic correlates with the best predicting capabilities. These acoustic predictors extracted from zero-occlusion rhotics were further contrasted between varieties revealing that the bilingual Spanish is placed in an intermediate position between …

Bimodal And Bilingual: Language Characteristics Of Asl And English Users In Deaf Education, Caitlin Bumpass

2021 Honors Symposium

Background:
• Understanding how language develops in children who are learning two languages can provide a better understanding of language development in general.
• There is an abundant amount of research regarding language skills of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (d/hh); however, it is unclear if researchers are using a similar definition when describing the characteristics of bimodal/bilingualism.
• Bimodal bilingualism is the use of both an oral language and a sign language, which in the U.S. often includes the ability to perceive and produce both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken and/or written English.

Defining Bimodal Bilingualism Within The Field Of Speech-Language Pathology, Jaycie Strunk

2021 Honors Symposium

BACKGROUND
• Speech-language pathologists work with a variety of individuals that each uniquely have their own journey in learning and using language for communication. Many times, professionals are working with those with hearing loss, who are diverse in their use of communication.
• 14.9% of children in between the ages of 6-19 years suffer from hearing loss (Niskar, 1998). This is a large group of individuals that speech-language pathologists serve, each with different goals and needs.
• According to the CDC, around 90% of children born with a congenital hearing loss are born to parents who are not deaf, which …

The Semantic And Acoustic Voice Features Differentiating Neutral And Traumatic Narratives, Yosef Shimon Amrami Jan 2021

The Semantic And Acoustic Voice Features Differentiating Neutral And Traumatic Narratives, Yosef Shimon Amrami

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a quantitative and qualitative exploration of how one linguistically communicates emotions through an autobiographical narrative. Psycholinguistic research has affirmed that linguistic features of a narrative, including semantic and acoustic features, indicate a narrator’s emotions and physiological. This study investigated whether these linguistic features could help differentiate between trauma and neutral narratives and if they can predict autobiographical narratives’ subjective trauma ratings (STR). Qualitative analyses of the positive and negative evaluative statements were also conducted, which indicated the narrators’ thought processes during recall. Twenty-two Spanish-English college students participated in this study and narrated both traumatic and neutral narratives. …

Theory And Practice: Phonological Awareness Instructional Methods Used In Deaf Education, Mary Cantino Jan 2021

Theory And Practice: Phonological Awareness Instructional Methods Used In Deaf Education, Mary Cantino

Theses and Dissertations

An inequality in literacy rates exists between deaf children and their hearing peers. Research indicates that visual phonic interventions such as Visual Phonics used alongside a phonics program enhances grapheme-phoneme correspondence. That practice in turn improves overall literacy achievement. However, as rates deaf literacy continue to lag ongoing research indicates that teachers may be ill prepared to use research-based interventions. This study seeks to identify the frequency of teacher implementation of Visual Phonics interventions as well as their exposure to these interventions via teacher education and professional development. This study will investigate if the presence of these elements by using …

The Impact Of Individual And Contextual Factors On L2 Writing Development: The Shifts In Written Corrective Feedback During Covid-19, Jordan Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

The novel COVID-19 pandemic has caused a rupture in the trajectory of education worldwide. Students, families and schools are experiencing unprecedented times and are navigating uncharted territory together in how we educate our students. In the U.S., it has been noted that the schism within education as a result of the pandemic is the biggest threat to national security (Choi, 2020), noting the importance of education within our democracy. This includes the trauma experienced by families due to deaths caused by the pandemic, the disproportionality of communities of color losing a parent (Brundage & Ramos-Callan, 2020), and the impact on …

Investigating Special Education Services For Elementary English Language Learners Within The South-Central U.S.: A Survey Of General Education, Special Education, And Esl Teachers, Kylie Bray

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This paper explores solutions to the issue of overrepresentation in special education among the English Language Learner (ELL) population. Reasons for overrepresentation of this population can be summarized into three main categories: diagnostic problems, TESOL shortages, and improper assessment tools. By educating future and current teachers on proper ways and techniques to teach, academic failure among ELL students is prevented. Assessment forms need to be revised and accountability needs to exist to ensure that poor teaching and learning environments are not being diagnosed as a disability. An attempt to find how effectively these solutions have been implemented into schools, overrepresentation …
