Generational Change In Formant Trajectories: The Low-Back-Merger Shift In Longview, Washington, Joseph A. Stanley Jan 2022

Generational Change In Formant Trajectories: The Low-Back-Merger Shift In Longview, Washington, Joseph A. Stanley

Faculty Publications

How have vowel formant trajectories changed as part of the LBMS?

As the front lax vowels lower and centralize, their formant dynamics change

  • Specifically, F2 is less dynamic, resulting in a “bounce” shape in F1-F2 plots.
  • More evident for lower vowels than higher ones.

Formant dynamics may change as global position changes (but not always).

  • Especially true with BAT and BET here.
  • BIT mostly unclear.
  • BAN did not have substantial changes in vowel dynamics.

Thai Sentence Segmentation Using Large Language Models, Narongkorn Panitsrisit Jan 2022

Thai Sentence Segmentation Using Large Language Models, Narongkorn Panitsrisit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Thai sentence segmentation has been on the topic of interest among Thai NLP communities. However, not much literature has explored the use of transformer-based large language models to tackle the issue. We conduct three experiments on the LST20 corpus, including (1) fine-tuning WangchanBERTa, a large language model pre-trained on Thai, across different classification tasks, (2) joint learning for clause and sentence segmentation, and (3) cross-lingual transfer using the multilingual model XLM-RoBERTa. Our findings show that WangchanBERTa outperforms other models in Thai sentence segmentation, and fine-tuning it with token and contextual information further improves its performance. However, cross-lingual transfer from English …

Comparison Of The Inter-Accent Variation Of Articulation Rate Between English And English With Imitated Chinese Accent Speech, Komchit Taweesablamlert

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This paper compares the articulation rate of 2 English speeches with different accents produced by Nigel Ng, a well-known stand-up comedian and youtuber, while he is taking the role of Uncle Roger and while he is not. Taking the role of Uncle Roger, Nigel Ng produces utterances with imitated Chinese accent to underline stereotypical Asian characteristics, and to contrast with his own “neutralish English accent”. The objective is to investigate the variation of articulation rate between 2 accents which are both produced by only one speaker. Based on the analysis of the articulation rate of Nigel Ng’s speeches, it is …

Analyzing Two Opposing Opinions From Social Media Through Static And Contextualized Word Embeddings, Wassakorn Sarakul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Public opinion analysis plays a vital role in various domains, such as marketing and politics. With the increasing volume of text data available through the internet and social media, efficient text-based analysis methods have become crucial. This study explores the application of static and contextualized word embeddings in word-based opinion analysis. The research questions focus on the impact of pre-training on static word embeddings, the efficacy of static and contextualized word embeddings in delineating opposing opinions, and the behavioral differences between the two embedding types. The findings suggest that pre-training improves embedding quality in small-sized datasets but may introduce noise …

"The Working World Is A Minefield": Counterstories Of Job Loss, Rachel Collier Murdock, Matt Baker, Stacy Tye-Williams

Faculty Publications

This study examines narratives told by employees who experienced involuntary job loss. Results expand on previous narrative research investigating the American Dream master narrative and job loss as related to the neoliberal claim that those who work hard will be successful. The study investigated the master narrative’s implications for job loss that if someone loses their job, they must be either flawed or a bad worker. Contributions include a new redeemed-resolved identity construction by individuals who narrated job loss as an opportunity to correct some flaw in either their character or work life and to emerge a better, changed worker. …

Representation Of Muslims In Time Magazine: A Corpus Linguistic Study, Constantia Rhinehart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis sought to explore the representation of Muslims in US-American

Press. In order to do this, the Time Magazine Corpus was used to observe words that collocate with the word “Muslim” in Time Magazine. The frequency of the word “Muslim” was observed for each decade and coded to determine the semantic prosody of each token. The 1960s-2006 were observed in order to provide a more comprehensive view of Muslim representation in Western media and how this representation has changed over time. The majority of collocations were considered to be neutral, however, a large number of collocations were considered …

Text Contention Behind Sharia Supervisory Board Reports: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Ari Ermawati, M Nur A Birton, Irfan Tarmizi, Muhammad Muttaqin

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Sharia Supervisory Board Reports (SSBRs) have an interest in convincing the public that entities supervised by a Sharia Supervisory Board (SSB) are sharia-compliant and reflective of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) practices. Failure in public convincing will be detrimental to Islamic banks’ reputation as well as the SSB’s image and credibility. This study aimed to critically assess how the SSB produces reports as texts to persuade the public using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). We analyzed four SSBRs from two Islamic Commercial Banks (ICBs) and two Islamic Business Units (IBUs) owned by other ICBs as well as interviews for data triangulation. We …

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman

Graduate Masters Theses

Behavioral interviewing has become a popular technique used across fields to assess the fitness of job seekers (Roulin & Bangerter, 2012; Powers, 2000). This particular style of interviewing calls on the interviewee to narrate their prior experiences in the workforce, with the idea that past behavior on the job is prelude to future job performance. The answers (stories) follow a specific format in order to be considered successful, one that adheres to the style and organization of the dominant Discourse (Gee, 1989). However, storytelling is a culturally situated practice and candidates from diverse backgrounds may construct their narratives outside of …

This research examines how women voice their narratives through tattoos by studying the experiences of seven tattooed women. Using the in-depth interview method, this research presents the narratives of these tattooed women in relation to their tattoos. Such narratives seem to be strongly intertwined with their life stories. The body is a medium in which a person can place certain markers to achieve certain purposes. As Butler theorizes, what the body displays is not the real self, but only an appearance according to the assumed or chosen role. In addition, according to Cixous, tattooing can be considered as a form …

Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine Dec 2021

Computational Methods For Comparative Analyses Of Discourses, Zachary Stine

Theses and Dissertations

An underexplored aspect of the abundant linguistic data available for computational analysis is the potential for conducting large-scale comparative analyses between different discourses as a more rigorous complement to existing methods. A significant obstacle in comparative studies is the requirement that a researcher distinguish between discursive distinctions that are superficial and those that reflect deeper, structural relationships between the discourses being compared. In this dissertation, I describe two methodologies for comparing discourses in terms of their underlying structures, drawing on distributional semantic models and information theory. These methodologies are explored within three case studies in which the discourses of several …

Abstract. The following research focuses on universal value analyses and lingvocultural analysis. It primarily focuses on the innovation, in that the concept of linguistic analysis has been combined with the concept of text. Furthermore, this method raises the work's theoretical level. These values therefore have an impact on how citizens are motivated to act as citizens and how their acts as global citizens are validated. Values serve as social action regulators. According to some researchers, education tends to lead to emancipation. "Universal value" refers to uncritically copying the value system of another country, supporting so-called "western" "freedom, democracy, equality, and …

The purpose of the study is to describe the morphonological rules for choosing the allomorph of the suffix -ost (-is), to study its role in the formation of the morphonological image of the derived word. The description of abstract feminine nouns with the suffix -ost (-is) made it possible to find out the following dependence: first, the morphonological characteristics of the stressed and alternations predict the allomorph of the suffix (a specific manifestation of the word-forming suffix), and the allomorph determines the stress and consonant outcome of the stem of the derived word. A certain hierarchy of morphonological units that …
