Bicultural, Personality, And Pedagogical Competences In The Perspective Of Bipa Language Assistants, Syihabuddin Syihabuddin

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

In 2019, there were 63.022 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language in Victorian schools, Australia. They were facilitated by 263 Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) local teachers. Due to a shortage of BIPA local teachers, the Department of Education and Training Victoria had recruited language assistants from Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the required skillsets of BIPA language assistants to support their duties. The data were collected through interviews, an inventory, observations, and stories of eight Indonesian language assistants with one year of experience. The findings reveal that the language assistants need to develop bicultural, personality …

The Exploration Of Indonesian Students’ Attributions In Efl Reading And Writing Classes, Yustinus Calvin Gai Mali

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Although the previous studies have given so much attention to exploring the students’ attributions in various settings and academic levels, there is a scarcity of research that presents and compares findings on the attributions of Indonesian university students, specifically in the reading (receptive skill) and writing (productive skill) courses. This study researched students’ attributions in their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing and reading classrooms at a private university in Indonesia. The research participants were 161 students who responded to an online questionnaire that explored their attributions for the success or failure in achieving the learning objectives of the …

This case study aims to find out how teachers of the International Class Program at an elementary school in Malang incorporated critical thinking (CT) pedagogy in teaching subjects with English as a Medium of Instruction. Eighteen teachers filled in an online questionnaire, and two of them were interviewed. Analysis of one pre-recorded video for English class (lasted for 13 minutes) and one video of Math class delivered through Zoom meeting (lasted for 29 minutes) was done to investigate how teachers triggered students’ thinking in the classroom practice. Also, an analysis of three lesson plans was done to dig further information …

The Translation Of Personal Pronouns In French Discourses Into Indonesian, Sajarwa Sajarwa Feb 2022

The Translation Of Personal Pronouns In French Discourses Into Indonesian, Sajarwa Sajarwa

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Translation is the transfer of a message from a source-language text into an equivalent target-language text. Cultural differences between a source language and a target language always leave marks on a translation process. Language as part of culture influences the minds of its speakers, especially translators. French literary texts (as source texts) and their Indonesian translations (target texts) can provide examples of the differences between the reasoning process of French literary writers and that of Indonesian translators, particularly in the translation of pronouns with this topic being the focus of this present study. By carefully investigating how pronouns are translated …

The Constellation Of Lacan’S Subject Register In Damar Shashangka’S Translation Of Serat Gatholoco, Yostiani Noor Asmi Harini, Hegar Krisna Cambara

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Gatholoco is a figure in Serat Gatholoco, a literary work suspected to be written in the early 19th century. The Gatholoco character is said to have a constellation of desires that presents subversive symptoms, positioning Serat Gatholoco as a controversial text at that time. The aim of this study is to describe the constellation of desires in Serat Gatholoco translation from Damar Shashangka, using the economics perspective of the Lacanian subject. This study used the qualitative interpretive method. The result shows Gatholoco as a sublimation of ideas that become the image-subject in the symbolic register, which is a manifestation of …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Communication becomes a powerful means of cultural diffusion and an alternative choice for the community. Recently, modern society has been observed to be highly consumeristic, where the image becomes a consideration in the decision-making to purchase. Visual design on the packaging has an effect on consumers' purchasing decisions. The traditional woven bamboo packaging (besek) has an exciting phenomenon in modern society today (urban). The qualitative approach was used with narrative construction or textual descriptions of phenomena. Formal analysis and sign interpretation were used to answer research problems. The formal analytical method was used to identify the way syntagmatic shapes produce …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The objective of this study is to look at learning indicators and contextualize extrinsic and intrinsic components in three Indonesian language textbooks for elementary school students. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a content analysis design to attain this purpose. The findings show that textbooks only use one learning indicator for each short story, although intrinsic (themes, characters, and messages) and extrinsic (social values, moral values, cultural values, and religious values) elements have been effectively balanced in the story. short. Although the results of this study do not represent any analysis of short story content in all primary …

Seeing Is Believing: The Role Of The Visual Stimulus In Cognitive Knowledge Of Sound Structure, John M. Sances Feb 2022

Seeing Is Believing: The Role Of The Visual Stimulus In Cognitive Knowledge Of Sound Structure, John M. Sances

Linguistics ETDs

Usage-based Phonology proposes that language users’ knowledge is stored in the form of exemplars reflecting experience of language usage. Exemplars encompass all visual and auditory information perceived during a language interaction, but few studies have examined the role that visual information plays. This dissertation addresses this question through two experiments. Experiment 1 tested perceptions of rounding via the visual signal (lip protrusion) in native French speakers. Participants perceived rounding in both visual and auditory signals, suggesting they may store the visual stimulus in their exemplars. Experiment 2 tested native American English speakers learning French on perceptions of rounding using audio …

Inflectional Morphology in Functional Grammar: Place and Function

We have presented in a previous article (cf. Dirassat n ° 8) the different mechanisms of derivative morphology. This, we have shown, is supported by the predicate formation rules which not only operate at the fund level but also produce structures: synthetic and analytical. The rules of expression (RE) Cl), for their part represent the processes that convert the underlying clause structure (SSJC) into a constituent structure (SC). This type of rule is responsible for the introduction of the different linguistic means, among others the affixes, the auxiliary verbs, the particles, the …

Some Major Problems of Modern Paremiology

Before getting to the heart of the matter, let us first make an empirical observation: in Arab societies, the recurrence of proverbial statements both at the level of oral communication and at the level of written texts is a reality that is evident. It imposes itself on it. Proverbs occupy a prominent place in Arab societies. For a very long time, the Arabs have manifested their taste for this type of concise, very expressive and full of teachings speech.

"A Fallen Woman": The Use Of Metaphor In Psychoanalysis, Matthew Schneider Feb 2022

"A Fallen Woman": The Use Of Metaphor In Psychoanalysis, Matthew Schneider

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study sought to understand the use of a central metaphor in a psychoanalytic treatment and its relationship to the process of change for the analysand. In linguistics, a metaphor is a word, phrase or idea that stands in for another idea. In psychoanalysis the relationship between conscious and unconscious conflictual material can share similar metaphorical connections as conscious thoughts or behavior often stands in for an unconscious wishes. The presence of a word or phrase that appears in speech in the context of particular affective moments in an analysand’s experience could be understood to be linked to unconscious processes …

Gender-Informed Features Of Film Reviews: A Statistical Linguistic Analysis, Matthew Kadish Feb 2022

Gender-Informed Features Of Film Reviews: A Statistical Linguistic Analysis, Matthew Kadish

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The project analyzes how language is used differently in movie reviews based on both the gender of the author of the review as well as the gender of the director of the reviewed film. In doing so, it aims to gain a better understanding of what contexts evoke a typically “masculine” use of language vs. a typically “feminine” use of language within the genre of film criticism, and what implications this has for the state of the film criticism with respect to gender. The results of this study seem to indicate that a critic’s language use takes on the characteristics …

Non-Argumental Clitics In Spanish And Galician: A Case Study Of The Distribution Of Solidarity And Ethical Clitics, Susana Huidobro Feb 2022

Non-Argumental Clitics In Spanish And Galician: A Case Study Of The Distribution Of Solidarity And Ethical Clitics, Susana Huidobro

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the properties of what traditional grammars call “superfluous elements” or non-arguments, so-called Ethical Dative Clitics (Bello 1954, Seco 1962 among others) and Solidarity Clitics (Álvarez, Rosario, X.L. Regueira & H. Monteaguedo 1986) in Spanish and Galician. This research fills an important gap in the existing formal literature on these forms, providing the first thorough syntactic and typological investigation of the latter phenomenon.

The study of non-argumental datives encounters difficulties at different levels: at a descriptive/empirical as well as at a theoretical level. From a descriptive point of view, there are no, so far in the literature, clear …

Incomplete Neutralization In Articulatory Phonology, Sejin Oh Feb 2022

Incomplete Neutralization In Articulatory Phonology, Sejin Oh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Previous studies have found small but significant phonetic traces of underlying distinctions for phonologically “neutralized” contrasts. This phenomenon, often called incomplete neutralization, has been found for final devoicing in many languages, (e.g., German; Port, Robert F. & O’Dell, 1985), but has also been reported for other neutralizing phenomena, including flapping in American English (Herd et al., 2010), monomoraic lengthening in Japanese (Braver & Kawahara, 2016), vowel deletion in French (Fougeron & Steriade, 1997), vowel epenthesis in Levantine Arabic (Gouskova & Hall, 2009), among others.

In my dissertation, I explore the (in)completeness of Russian palatalization in the Articulatory Phonology framework, implementing …

A Systematic Literature Review On Spam Content Detection And Classification, Sanaa Kaddoura, Ganesh Chandrasekaran, Daniela Elena Popescu, Jude Hemanth Duraisamy

All Works

The presence of spam content in social media is tremendously increasing, and therefore the detection of spam has become vital. The spam contents increase as people extensively use social media, i.e ., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and E-mail. The time spent by people using social media is overgrowing, especially in the time of the pandemic. Users get a lot of text messages through social media, and they cannot recognize the spam content in these messages. Spam messages contain malicious links, apps, fake accounts, fake news, reviews, rumors, etc. To improve social media security, the detection and control of spam text are …

Ethnic Differences In Lbms Structure, Lisa M. Johnson Jan 2022

Ethnic Differences In Lbms Structure, Lisa M. Johnson

Faculty Publications

This poster reports on structural correlations between low back vowel merger/position and front lax vowel lowering/retraction (Low-Back-Merger Shift or LBMS). Based on analyses of word list recordings from two groups of Utah teens (Pacific Islanders and Euro Americans), I argue that the position of BOT affects the front vowels in the two ethnic groups differently: while the F1 of EA front vowels is inversely correlated with BOT F1, PI front vowels appear to be more sensitive to BOT F2. These results highlight the structural complexity of LBMS and the importance of recruiting ethnically diverse groups of participants for such studies.

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee Jan 2022

Language Interfaces In Adult Heritage Language Acquisition: A Study On Encoding Of Nominal Reference In Mandarin Chinese As A Heritage Language, Jing Jin, Sihui Echo Ke, John Chi-Kin Lee

Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications

According to the Interface Hypothesis in the field of bilingualism, the interface connecting a linguistic module with a language-external domain (e.g., syntax-discourse) will present prolonged difficulties for adult bilingual learners, as compared with the interface connecting language-internal modules (e.g., syntax-semantics). This study tested whether the Interface Hypothesis is applicable to the acquisition of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language. An internet-based acceptability judgment task (AJT) was administered to 58 advanced and intermediate adult Chinese heritage speakers to collect data in accuracy and reaction time to investigate the adult heritage speakers’ mastery of referential nominal expressions regulated at the syntax-semantics and …

“You Keep Using That Word”: Why Privacy Doesn’T Mean What Lawyers Think, Joshua A.T. Fairfield Jan 2022

“You Keep Using That Word”: Why Privacy Doesn’T Mean What Lawyers Think, Joshua A.T. Fairfield

Scholarly Articles

This article explores how the need to define privacy has impeded our ability to protect it in law.

The meaning of “privacy” is notoriously hard to pin down. This article contends that the problem is not with the word “privacy,” but with the act of trying to pin it down. The problem lies with the act of definition itself and is particularly acute when the words in question have deep-seated and longstanding common-language meanings, such as liberty, freedom, dignity, and certainly privacy. If one wishes to determine what words like these actually mean to people, definition is the wrong tool …

Morphosyntactic Variation In Bantu: Focus On East Africa, Peter Edelsten, Hannah Gibson, Rozenn Guérois, Gastor Mapunda, Lutz Marten, Julius Taji Jan 2022

Morphosyntactic Variation In Bantu: Focus On East Africa, Peter Edelsten, Hannah Gibson, Rozenn Guérois, Gastor Mapunda, Lutz Marten, Julius Taji

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

Recent studies have developed a systematic approach to morphosyntactic variation among Bantu languages, taking well-known and widely attested construction types as a starting point and sketching their distribution across the family. One such approach, Guérois et al. (2017), utilises 142 morphosyntactic parameters or features, across a sample of some 50 Bantu languages (Marten et al. 2018). The present paper builds on this work and focusses on 10 parameters of variation where there is a significant difference between the values for East African Bantu languages and non-East African Bantu languages of the sample. The parameters relate to areas such as noun …

A Linguistic Analysis Of Rukiga Personal Names, Allen Asiimwe Jan 2022

A Linguistic Analysis Of Rukiga Personal Names, Allen Asiimwe

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

The goal of the paper is to provide a linguistic description of the structure of personal names in a lesser studied Bantu language of Uganda, Rukiga (JE14). Data show that Rukiga personal names are presented as lexical entities but with underlying elaborate grammatical structures derived from the syntax, morphology, phonology and the lexicon of the language. Personal names in Rukiga form a special category of nouns derived from nouns, adjectives, verbs, phrases, clauses and full sentences. This study establishes that truncation, affixal derivation, lexicalization of phrases, clauses and sentences are employed in name-formation. The study further reveals that the socio-cultural …

The Structure Of The Iraqw Noun Phrase, Chrispina Alphonce Jan 2022

The Structure Of The Iraqw Noun Phrase, Chrispina Alphonce

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

The structure of the noun phrase (NP) is demonstrated to differ among languages. Albeit studies that paid attention on Southern Cushitic languages in general and Iraqw in particular, their contribution is selective to the general grammar of the language while the structure of the NP is scarcely described. This study contributes to the description of the language through an empirical explanation of the elements and the morphosyntactic properties of the NP in the language. It describes the orders of the elements, their co-occurrence, and constraints to illuminate the structure of the NP of the language. It draws on the data …

“They’Re Plotting Against Us”: Public Narratives Utilised By Kenyan Community-Based Organisations Advocating For Land Rights, Billian Khalayi Otundo, Anne Nangulu Jan 2022

“They’Re Plotting Against Us”: Public Narratives Utilised By Kenyan Community-Based Organisations Advocating For Land Rights, Billian Khalayi Otundo, Anne Nangulu

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

The narratives of Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) are significant for linguistic analysis as they provide natural data in highly emotional public discourses. In Kenya, any topic or discourse on land injustice is a highly emotive venture. In the same vein, public narratives are relevant to provide evidence for evaluations of language choice, power, and authority, as well as the linguistic communication of emotion. In this respect, emotion-provoking narratives are highly important phenomena that are hardly ever absent in the public discourse of CBOs advocating for land rights. Within the framing rhetoric of social movements, we explore how these groups frame land …

Pragmatic Inferences Of Locative Enclitics In Luganda, Moureen Nanteza Jan 2022

Pragmatic Inferences Of Locative Enclitics In Luganda, Moureen Nanteza

Journal of the Language Association of Eastern Africa

This paper examines the non-locative functions of locative enclitics in Luganda (JE 15). Locative enclitics are words which cannot stand alone but attach on a verb to make meaning. Their status is ambiguous between free word and affix, hence motivating their analysis as enclitics. The enclitics are attached on the post final position of their hosts. Although the locative enclitics occur regularly in some Bantu languages (Luganda, Runyankore-Rukiga, Runyoro- Rutooro, Lunda, Ikizu, Fwe, Chichewa, Kinyarwanda among others), they have not been widely studied in the literature. The paper looks at verbal locative enclitics only but the locative enclitics also appear …

Part of our research process has been to engage the voices of individuals involved in employer-supported education and training initiatives or otherwise impacted by the issues we have been investigating. To this end, we hosted a series of convenings to discuss our findings and invited a group of12 interested parties who represented a range of backgrounds and experience in the workforce development system to respond to our initial observations, to make sure that we are doing things that were relevant and useful, and to identify things that we had missed or that we didn't get right.
