Worksheets For A First Course In Transformational Syntax, Austin Hale
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction, "The worksheets collected here were written in answer to a need for short exercises that could be easily worked in class and that would illustrate and allow for the application of material presented to the Area Linguistics course of the Summer Institute of Linguistics held at the University of North Dakota during the summer of 1965. With the exception of the introductory worksheets, which were designed to provide a bridge for he approach of transformational syntax by students who had some acquaintance with the Tagmemic view of grammar, these materials were intended as pedagogical aids for the …

A Problem Of Intonation Contours In Relation To Grammatical Structure, Alan Pence
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "A question of considerable importance in the present climate of linguistic debate is the relationship of phonological description to grammatical description. Viewpoints range all the way from a model which proposes the complete autonomy of phonology, to another which asserts its total dependence on grammar. This paper presents in summary form a problem of Kunimaipa intonation, showing how it is handled in relation to two different models."

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
The seven texts [...] include two describing some of the changes in tribal life due to the coming and influence of Europeans (any white men), three describing the trip made by the younger man when he left the tribal area to work for two years on a plantation and two of 'village gossip.'
Text materials are interesting not only for their content, but for what can be learned about the language by studying them. There are two general areas of interest exhibited in these texts, Morphology - here, primarily the composition of verbs and nouns, and Syntax, the larger area …
Quantification And The English Comparative, Austin Hale
Quantification And The English Comparative, Austin Hale
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "The work which led to this paper was provoked by the publication of two sharply divergent approaches to the English comparative construction, one by Robert B. Lees, the other by Carlota S. Smith. Since each of these approaches represents the work of a competent linguist who heartily rejects the possibility that there might ultimately be more than one correct analysis of the English comparative, it appeared to be of some interest to review and evaluate these two rival views. It soon became apparent, however, that neither of these views was entirely adequate. This paper accordingly represents an …
