The Importance Of Including In An Esl Program: A Study Of Intonation Patterns Used In Everyday Spoken English And Some Suggestions For Working With Intonation In The Classroom, A. Rebecca Cardozo

MA TESOL Collection

Native speakers of English rely on more than just words and grammatical structures to communicate their feelings, attitudes and intentions. In fact, it is often not the words and the grammar that convey the speaker's message. Rather, it is the speaker's intonation pattern, body language and voice volume that get the message across. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate the importance of including in the ESL classroom a study of intonation patterns used in everyday spoken English. It is also the purpose of this paper to suggest materials and methods which could be used in the classroom …

National Michigan Test Score Improvement Averages For The International Students Of English At The School For International Training Of Ten Programs From January 1974 Through June 1976, Robert J. Thomas

MA TESOL Collection

This project contains student data, consisting of nationality, test scores, and age, from ten programs of International Students of English at the School for International Training. The data has been calculated to produce national test score averages which are helpful when comparing the various national and language group abilities of performance on the Michigan Test. In general this material supports the hypothesis that the closer a student's native language is to English linguistically the greater his score improvement will be on the Michigan Test.

Tooning Into English ( A Rationale For The Use Of Cartoons In The English Language Classroom Plus Cartoons And Lesson Plans ), Timothy James Maciel

MA TESOL Collection

Teachers of English are constantly seeking new and better materials to aid their students in learning the English language. Sometimes these materials are in the form of newspaper or magazine articles and advertisements to show how a grammatical pattern studied in the textbook is actually applied in the culture. Sometimes these materials are in the form of cultural artifacts such as clothing items or eating utensils. And very often these materials are in the form of pictures and photographs to give the student a visual representation of new words or grammatical patterns. Whatever the material, the teacher is constantly looking …

A New View Of To-Contraction, Donald G. Frantz Jan 1977

A New View Of To-Contraction, Donald G. Frantz

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

All treatments of so-called to-contraction in English (Lakoff 1970, Bresnan 1971, Lightfoot 1976) attempt to deal with the phenomenon entirely in terms of contiguity. The purpose of this squib is to point out that the major constraint on this phenomenon is rather one of subject coreference, and furthermore that this coreference condition is identical to that for a universal rule which I have called 'equi-subject clause union' (Frantz 1976).

On Downstairs Transitivity In Causative Clause Unions, Donald G. Frantz Jan 1977

On Downstairs Transitivity In Causative Clause Unions, Donald G. Frantz

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that a number of languages require downstairs (ds) intransitivity for causative clause union (CsU). In addition I offer for testing the hypothesis that ds intransitivity is a universal constraint in CsU. In order to accomplish my initial purpose and at the same time give preliminary testing to the proposed hypothesis, I will compare the predictions made by the received version of CsU with those made by my own version plus the proposed ds intransitivity constraint for a number of languages."

Remarks On Cheyenne Obviation And Pluralization, Wayne E. Leman Jan 1977

Remarks On Cheyenne Obviation And Pluralization, Wayne E. Leman

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction, "In Cheyenne, as in other Algonquian languages, when two or more third-person nominals are in the same sentence or "contextual span" (Wolfart 1973:17), one of the nominals must be treated as "nearer" or more "in focus" than the other third-person nominal(s). The nearer person is called the "proximate" form while any other(s) is said to be "obviate" (sometimes called a "fourth-person"). The proximate nominal can function as the "topic" of a discourse segment, or "the person earlier spoken of and already known" (Bloomfield 1962:38). The marking of one or more nominals as obviates is called "obviation".

The Imperative Morpheme In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1977

The Imperative Morpheme In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "There are several allomorphs of the morpheme indicating second person imperative and several of the morpheme indicating first person imperative in Seri. Since these allomorphs are for the most part suppletive in each case, it is necessary to posit two multi-clause spelling rules to account for them. In this paper I will present evidence for the analysis I have adopted which to the best of my knowledge accounts for all of the second person and first person imperatives in Seri."

Linguistic Nature Of Prenasalization, Mark H. Feinstein Jan 1977

Linguistic Nature Of Prenasalization, Mark H. Feinstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The linguistic nature of the class of sounds which are traditionally called "prenasalized consonants" (PNCs) has never been adequately explored. The purpose of this work is to provide a descriptively adequate framework in which to characterize PNCs, and to express their behavior most generally. This is done within the theory of generative phonology (essentially the Standard Theory of Chomsky and Halle 1968), incorporating a theory of markedness and syllabification. It is argued that PNCs cannot be described adequately as monosegmental entities in linguistic theory. Rather, PNCs in all languages are claimed to be sequences of homorganic nasal and oral consonant …

On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot Dec 1976

On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot

Theses and Dissertations

In his Über das niederländische Adverbialpronomen 'er' Bech argues that the subject expletive of Dutch is inserted when the NP subject has an indefinite article. Bech also claims that the subjective expletive is a local subject and not a logical subject.

This thesis proposes that the use of the subject expletive cannot be based upon a traditional structuralist concept. The author rejects some of Bech's claims and argues for a semantic distinction between definiteness and non-definiteness as a basis for expletive insertion. An attempt is also made to apply the same distinction in accounting for the use of het with …

Syntactic Combinations Of Verbs In Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota), Michael Robert Scott Aug 1976

Syntactic Combinations Of Verbs In Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota), Michael Robert Scott

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explain the differences among syntactic combinations of verbs in Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota). The thesis at first examines the literature on combinations of verbs in Lakota. Thereafter criteria for distinguishing morphological combinations of verbs (compounds) and syntactic combinations of verbs are set forth. The criteria are: potential for replacement, regularity of meaning, and potential for variation in inflection. The emphasis of the thesis is on the classification of syntactic combinations of verbs which it proposes.

The classification contains six classes, two of which are subdivided. The classification is based on the interaction of …

The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana Aug 1976

The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana

Theses and Dissertations

Of the language learning materials which already exist on Indonesian, the language of nearly one hundred million people in Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, none is particularly suited for fieldworkers--that is, whose whose interest in the language is more practical than academic, whose intent is to live and work in Indonesia for an extended period of time. Fieldworkers need to develop the communicational skills of listening and speaking over those of reading and writing. They also need to learn the speech level which is most appropriate for foreigners. In Indonesia this is a formal language style, one which shows …

A Comparison Of The Vocabulary Ability Of Four- And Five-Year-Old Bilingual Mexican-American Children With That Of Monolingual Anglo-American Children, Amparo Abila Feb 1976

A Comparison Of The Vocabulary Ability Of Four- And Five-Year-Old Bilingual Mexican-American Children With That Of Monolingual Anglo-American Children, Amparo Abila

Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to investigate the Spanish and English receptive pictorial vocabulary of four- and five-year-old bilingual Mexican-American children. The performance of bilingual Mexican-American children on the Mexican-American Inventory of Receptive Abilities--MIRA (Nelson-Burgess and Meyerson, 1975) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test--PPVT (Dunn, 1959) was compared to that of monolingual Anglo-American children of the same relative age range and socioeconomic level.

Switch-Reference In Seri, Mary B. Moser Jan 1976

Switch-Reference In Seri, Mary B. Moser

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction, "Several recent papers have presented data on switch-reference (subject-change markers) in certain of the Yuman languages. The first article dealing with the subject in general is Jacobsen's "Switch-Reference in Hokan-Coahuiltecan", in which he reports the feature as present in Washo and Kashaya (Southwestern Pomo) but absent in certain other Hokan languages. Winter states that "switch-reference signaled by -m must be reconstructed for Proto-Yuman." As for Proto-Hokan, he believes that we must admit to the possibility that an independent development of switch-reference occurred in various member languages. He considers the likelihood "utterly remote" that a Proto-Hokan switch-reference device …

English-Khmer Medical Dictionary, Sally E. Keller Jan 1976

English-Khmer Medical Dictionary, Sally E. Keller

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This thesis is a study in lexicography in the form of a bilingual medical dictionary, containing approximately 1,500 entries. The methodology followed in this study was mainly first-hand field work in conjunction with native speakers of Khmer in the country of Cambodia for a period of over one year (including several months in Thailand), eliciting glosses and compiling definitions in the Cambodian (Khmer) language of English medical terms to be studied by Cambodian nursing students. The thesis also includes in introduction and conclusion presenting, defending, and evaluating facets of the project and the finished work, as an aid to other …
