Remote Detection Of Pest Damage And Tree Health In Tart Cherry, Christina Klara Lilligren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

With the increasing affordability of technology, using technological advancements to assess tree health might soon become a possibility in low input crops such as tart cherry. We evaluated the ability of drone-mounted multispectral cameras, ceptometry

(canopy density), and soil conductivity meters (soil texture) to predict pest occurrence and remotely detect tree health. Pest scouting data were compared to the different technological datasets to identify the possibility of use for pest detection. While drone-mounted multispectral cameras were able to identify chlorotic trees, powdery mildew was not reliably detectable under a management threshold with current multispectral camera technology. Trees with low canopy …

Water Conservation Strategies For Growing Ornamental Plants In Utah Landscapes, Jenny L. Koller Aug 2025

Water Conservation Strategies For Growing Ornamental Plants In Utah Landscapes, Jenny L. Koller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

When early pioneers settled in Utah, they faced challenges living in a dry region with limited water. They built dams, canals, and irrigation systems by working together as a community to manage their water needs. However, adoption of European landscaping methods, farming and rapidly growing population increased water need while climate change and frequent drought reduced water supply.

Today, Utah is one of the driest states and uses more water per person than most other states in the nation. If things don't change, the state could run out of water by 2060. To address Utah's growing water challenges, this research …

Early And Late Season Weed Control In Dormant Alfalfa, Mckenna Saige Barney Aug 2025

Early And Late Season Weed Control In Dormant Alfalfa, Mckenna Saige Barney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Hexazinone + diuron is an herbicide mix commonly used to control weeds in established alfalfa in the late fall or early spring when alfalfa is dormant. If applied outside full dormancy, this mix can cause significant crop injury. The Intermountain West’s cold weather leaves a narrow time frame for applicators to apply herbicide. To help extend the application period to when alfalfa has not yet entered complete dormancy, the burndown herbicide paraquat can be added to the tank mix. Paraquat burns back existing plant matter to prevent hexazinone + diuron from spreading throughout the plant and causing long-term crop injury. …

Systematics, Evolution, And Species Delimitation Of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Based On Ultraconserved Element Phylogenomics, Brandon Ross Claridge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The diversity of life on Earth is highly skewed towards a few key groups of organisms. Parasitoid wasps are among the most species-rich yet understudied organisms on our planet. Ichneumonidae, the largest parasitoid wasp family, includes 25,000 known species out of an estimated total of 100,000, far exceeding the nearly 70,000 species of vertebrates. As parasitoids, ichneumonids lay a single egg onto or inside their hosts, and the resulting ichneumonid larva consumes its host, ultimately killing it. Most hosts are the larvae or pupae of moths, butterflies, flies, beetles, and other wasps, including many pest species injurious to agriculture and …

Improving Seasonal Precipitation Forecasts In The Western United States Through Statistical Downscaling, Bradley Vernon Aug 2025

Improving Seasonal Precipitation Forecasts In The Western United States Through Statistical Downscaling, Bradley Vernon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Seasonal precipitation forecasts are essential tools for water management, especially in drought-prone areas like the Western United States. While global forecasting systems can predict precipitation months to years in advance, these forecasts are typically produced at a coarse spatial resolution due to high computational costs – especially when multiple forecast iterations, or ensemble members, are included. This coarse resolution limits their ability to capture localized weather features, such as those shaped by the complex terrain of the Intermountain West. Here, analog statistical downscaling is demonstrated as an effective approach to enhance the spatial resolution of operational seasonal forecasts provided by …

Optimization Of The Root Zone In Controlled Environment Agriculture, Brendan Fatzinger Aug 2025

Optimization Of The Root Zone In Controlled Environment Agriculture, Brendan Fatzinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) helps grow plants in spaces where resources like water and nutrients are limited, such as deserts or spacecraft. Effective management of water in the root zone, the area where plant roots grow, is vital to keeping plants healthy, especially in closed-loop systems where water cannot be wasted, as will be necessary for long-duration space missions.

An improved automated watering system designed for use in space-like environments was developed over several trials. Early designs using suction to draw water through tubes faced problems with uneven watering and roots blocking the tubes. Switching to a system that pushed …

Watermelon Production In Utah: Exploring Biostimulants To Reduce Water And Fertilizer Use, Evan A. Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The impacts of climate change and drought threaten water supplies that are important for watermelon production. Additionally, rising fertilizer costs and off-site effects from improper fertilizer applications cause concerns for the sustainability of watermelon production. Biostimulant products have shown promise in helping plants maintain production under reduced irrigation conditions and may offset fertilizer addition. Biostimulants are any microorganism or substance that is applied to a plant with the goal to increase nutrition efficiency, crop quality traits, or tolerance to environmental stresses. Most of the production in the U.S. uses seedless watermelon which are typically grown in greenhouses and transplanted due …

Supplementing Tannins To Increase Performance And Reduce Methane Emissions In Cows Grazing On Western Grasslands, Horacio Pedro Blanchard Aug 2025

Supplementing Tannins To Increase Performance And Reduce Methane Emissions In Cows Grazing On Western Grasslands, Horacio Pedro Blanchard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Cattle grazing on U.S. rangelands often rely on a limited diet made up mostly of grasses. As the seasons change from spring to fall, the nutritional quality of these grasses declines, leading to less efficient digestion and higher production of methane—a potent greenhouse gas. In addition, most grass-based pastures lack beneficial plant compounds, such as tannins.

This study explored whether adding natural tannins—specifically, condensed and hydrolyzable tannins from quebracho and chestnut trees—to the diet of grazing cattle could improve how the use efficiency of nutrients and reducing methane emissions from cattle. Over two years, 24 cow-calf pairs grazed in small …

Comparative Impacts Of Irradiation On Antioxidant Compounds Of Scalded And Non-Scalded Skin Of Granny Smith Apples, Angela Banda

Food Science (MS) Theses

Post-harvest Superficial scald affects the quality of Granny Smith Apples. Oxidative stress develops superficial scald with antioxidant systems mitigating the extent of this damage. This study evaluated the effects of gamma, X-ray, and electron beam irradiation on antioxidants – ascorbic acid, total phenolics, α-tocopherol, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and campesterol – in scalded and non-scalded apple peel tissue. Apples were treated with 0.2-0.77 kGy and stored at 0-1 °C. Irradiation at the applied doses increased scald incidence, suggesting that disruption of antioxidant systems promoted reactive oxygen species accumulation and membrane damage. While certain antioxidants appeared to be upregulated as a stress response, …

Ground Truthing Of Inaturalist Submissions Confirms The Presence Of Asian Needle Ants, Brachyponera Chinensis (Emery) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), In Louisiana, A New State Record, Aaron R. Ashbrook, Victoria Bayless, Stephen Baca, Gerardo Guevara-Milla, Chris E. Carlton

Midsouth Entomologist

Based on submissions to iNaturalist from citizen scientists, the presence of the Asian needle ant (Brachyponera chinensis), was confirmed for Louisiana in East Baton Rouge Parish. Use of citizen scientist platforms for sources of invertebrate taxa distributions is a powerful tool but requires caution because the records are typically not validated by physical voucher specimens that have been deposited in publicly accessible museums, and identification of many species is not possible by images alone. To demonstrate the usefulness of citizen scientist programs like iNaturalist, possible collection sites for Asian needle ant specimens were located. Specimens were collected, identified, and vouchers …

How Do Acoustic Indices Serve As Proxy Of Temperate Forests And In Relation To Presence Of Bobcat (Lynx Rufus) In Central Indiana Habitats, Faith Mcphee, Kristen Bellisario Dr.

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Central Indiana is largely dominated by agriculture which has led to numerous historical extirpations of mammals. The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is slowly re-establishing across northern Indiana after near extirpation in the early 1900s and utilizes corridors similar to extirpated mammals. Bobcats as a focal species can serve as an indicator for habitat quality for future designated wildlife corridors. New metrics have emerged from species monitoring through remote sensing technologies such as eco-acoustic indices which summarize sound profiles, are a potential proxy for biodiversity, and could be utilized in monitoring large mammals. Here, we investigate the relationship between Lynx …

The Molecular And Behavioral Characterization Of The Murine Cre – Loxp Skeletal Muscle Synthesized Bdnf Knockout Model, Asha E. Rustad

All NMU Master's Theses

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin essential for supporting the growth, differentiation, and health of neurons within the central and peripheral nervous systems. BDNF is also a member of the myokine family, where muscle synthesized-BDNF (msBDNF) is thought to facilitate the crucial bi-directional communication between the motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates. Since 2008, the Ottem Laboratory has investigated the role of msBDNF by employing Cre/LoxP recombinase technology to selectively delete the BDNF coding region within skeletal muscle of mice. This approach generates animals with either heterozygous or homozygous deletions of msBDNF, as well as BDNF …

Investigating The E74-Mediated Regulation Of A Gata Factor In Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes, Jacklyn Marie Estrada Aug 2025

Investigating The E74-Mediated Regulation Of A Gata Factor In Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes, Jacklyn Marie Estrada

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti has a significant impact on public health as a vector for multiple pathogens. Its ability to transmit deadly diseases, including Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, and Zika, emphasizes the urgency of understanding its reproductive biology. In female mosquitoes, reproductive success hinges on obtaining a vertebrate blood meal, which triggers vitellogenesis - the synthesis of yolk protein precursors (YPPs) necessary for egg development. Without a blood meal, female Ae. aegypti remain in a state of previtellogenic arrest, where the YPP gene vitellogenin (Vg) is repressed by a type of transcriptional factor, GATAr (AaGATAr) (Attardo et al., 2003). …

Spatial And Thermal Aspects Of The Ecology Of Three Sympatric Rattlesnakes In The Montane Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Joshua James Mead Aug 2025

Spatial And Thermal Aspects Of The Ecology Of Three Sympatric Rattlesnakes In The Montane Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Joshua James Mead

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

To understand how animals coexist on the landscape, the individual aspects of a species life history must first be understood. Animals need to find locations that provide the resources they need to survive. Movement, microhabitats, and temperature can alter such areas where animals occur. Understanding animal movements provide important information on space use and microhabitats on the landscape. Ectothermic animals must acquiesce to ambient temperatures or use behavioral modifications to alter their body temperature. The ability to maintain suitable body temperature is essential for physiological function, reproduction, and ability to avoid predation. Research on the variation in a species ecology …

Expression Of Glycine Transporter 1 In The Rodent Basal Ganglia: Glial Vs. Neuronal, Rosa Atziri Perez Aug 2025

Expression Of Glycine Transporter 1 In The Rodent Basal Ganglia: Glial Vs. Neuronal, Rosa Atziri Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Glycine functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS),and it is mainly involved in autonomic functions. The levels of extracellular glycine are regulated by two membrane transporters, glycine transporter 1 and glycine transporter 2 (GlyT1 and GlyT2, respectively). These transporters differ in function and localization within the CNS. For many years, studies suggested that only GlyT2 served as a neuronal marker; however, GlyT1 has been localized in neurons in recent studies. The expression of GlyT1 is widespread compared to GlyT2; hence, the main objective is to determine the nature of the expression of GlyT1 in areas devoid …
