Tracing Microplastics From Polymer-Coated Urea: Urban To Agricultural Pathways And Environmental Fate, Caden Joseph Seely Apr 2026

Tracing Microplastics From Polymer-Coated Urea: Urban To Agricultural Pathways And Environmental Fate, Caden Joseph Seely

Theses and Dissertations

Polymer-coated urea (PCU) is widely used as a slow-release nitrogen (N) fertilizer because it improves N use efficiency and reduces losses through leaching, denitrification, and volatilization. However, the polymer coating raises concerns about potential microplastic (MP) transport to surface waters following fertilizer application. This thesis evaluates the off-site transport of MPs and associated nutrient and sediment losses from PCU in both urban landscape and agricultural systems. In the urban landscape study, treatments included sod, mulched beds, and water-efficient ground cover receiving uncoated urea, PCU, or liquid slow-release N at 225 kg N ha⁻¹ (with reduced rates for beds and ground …

Temporal Interference Stimulation Effectively Reduces Parkinsonian Beta Band Activity In A Computational Model Of The Basal Ganglia Network, Anna Stolle

25th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2026)

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, leading to impaired motor function and disrupted basal ganglia activity. One of the most effective treatments is deep brain stimulation (DBS), which targets deep brain regions to restore abnormal firing patterns. However, DBS requires invasive surgery to implant electrodes, posing surgical risks and limiting accessibility. This has driven interest in non-invasive alternatives that achieve similar therapeutic outcomes. Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) is a non-invasive technique delivering two high-frequency currents through scalp electrodes. These currents overlap to produce a low-frequency "beat" capable of reaching deep structures …

Transcranial Temporal Interference Stimulation Modulates Spike Timing Of Subthalamic Nucleus Neurons In A Computational Neuron Model, Kimberly Maldonado

25th Annual A. Paul and Carol C. Schaap Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2026)

The established treatment for Parkinson’s disease is deep brain stimulation (DBS), an effective but invasive procedure requiring surgical implantation of electrodes. Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) is a novel, noninvasive technique with potential to target deep brain regions. It applies two high-frequency currents with a slight offset through scalp electrodes, producing a low-frequency envelope that may modulate neuronal activity where the fields overlap. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is the favored DBS target in advanced Parkinson’s disease. While tTIS has been studied in humans, animals, and generic neuron models, no work has examined tTIS on optimized models of STN neurons. We …

Celebration of Research

Pollinators are essential to terrestrial ecosystems, and bumble bees are among the most effective pollinators in the United States (Hatfield et al., 2012). They pollinate forbs (non-grass herbaceous flowering plants), including crops, garden plants, and native prairie species (Dumroese et al., 2016). Their ability to travel long distances, forage in cool temperatures, and buzz-pollinate makes them critical to both wild and agricultural productivity (Mola & Williams et al., 2019). Research shows that bumble bee populations have declined in recent decades due to habitat loss, reduced floral resources, pesticide exposure, and climate change (IPBES, 2016).

Northwest Iowa is dominated by agriculture, …

Celebration of Research

EagleEye is a temperate bacteriophage, which was isolated on the host, Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155 from soil collected in Houston, TX. It is classified as cluster A16. We are using a systematic genetic screen to uncover functions of phage genes for which the function is unknown. We cloned each gene into the pExTra plasmid and assayed phage gene individually for two phenotypes: cytotoxicity, the ability to interfere with host cell growth, and defense, the ability to protect the host cell from infection by other phages. We have cloned all but 15 of EagleEye’s 95 protein-coding genes. Thus far, we have …

If You Give A Mouse A Phage, Peyton Abraham, Princess Bola-Lawal, Amelia Brown, Anne Eveland, Jenna Kluxdal, Elsie Larson, Gabrielle O'Bannon, Leonardo Romo, Sara S. Tolsma

Celebration of Research

Island3 (Cluster I1) and Sbash (Cluster I2) are Mycobacteriophages that have a high degree of genetic similarity—especially in the region of their genomes that include genes for structural proteins. Because their structural proteins appear so similar, we hypothesized that antibodies raised against Island3 would cross-react with Sbash and vice versa. To test our hypothesis, we immunized female BALB/c mice with phage high titer lysates or filtered M. smegmatis (control), collected serum, and used the antibodies in ELISA and Western Blot assays. We observed less cross-reactivity than we expected.

RedRaider89 (Cluster B1) and SuperHeroCarly (Cluster D1) infect Mycobacterium smegmatis mc²155. RedRaider89 has 99 predicted protein-coding genes and SuperHeroCarly has 87 …

Understanding The Role Of Lipid Metabolism On Pancreatic Cancer Metastasis, Luke Fischer, Kylie Foss, Jacob Lewis, Joshua Lewis, Emma Steinhardt, Megan Vangarven, Cody Rozeveld Apr 2026

Understanding The Role Of Lipid Metabolism On Pancreatic Cancer Metastasis, Luke Fischer, Kylie Foss, Jacob Lewis, Joshua Lewis, Emma Steinhardt, Megan Vangarven, Cody Rozeveld

Celebration of Research

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest types of cancer due to late-stage detection and early metastasis. Other than smoking, one of the few known risk factors for pancreatic cancer is obesity (1). On the cellular level, excess fat can promote cell migration and invasion (2). However, the exact fat utilization pathway remains unknown. We propose that lysosomes may be exploited in pancreatic cancer to break down fat and provide energy for metastasis and invasion.

Quantifying And Validating The Decrease Of Ciliogenesis Genes In Mouse Models With Pcd, Mia X. Kellenberger, Casey Mckenzie, Lance Lee

Celebration of Research

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disease affecting one in 16,000 children and results from structural or functional defects of motile cilia1. Lack of functioning cilia may result in reduced respiratory function, subfertility or infertility, and hydrocephalus due to a reduced ability to clear fluids and particles. A cilium consists of nine microtubules centered around a central pair complex1. Mutations in genes Spef2 (bgh), Cfap221 (nm1054), or Cfap54(Cfap54gt/gt), which encode proteins located in the central pair complex, result in PCD2,3,4. We previously utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in early and late deuterosomal cells, …

Bacterial 2-Hybrid Assay: Interactions Of Phage Island3'S Gene 36 And Mycobacterium Smegmatis Gene Products, Elsie L. Larson, Sara Tolsma

Celebration of Research

Island3 is a Cluster I1 bacteriophage that infects Mycobacterium smegmatis. Northwestern College students are performing systematic genetic screens to identify Island3 genes that are cytotoxic or protect host cells from infection by other phages (defense). We identified Island3’s gp36 as a cytotoxic gene. Now we are using a bacterial two-hybrid assay to identify a host protein(s) interaction partner. We hypothesize that host proteins that bind gp36 will reveal the mechanism by which gp36 confers cytotoxicity.

The ecological services of insect pollinators are well established and the documented decline in pollinator biodiversity is of great concern. Baseline data and continued monitoring are essential as we ongoing trends in pollinator communities and evaluate efforts supporting their recovery. Using two survey methods, our study provides pollinator community data at two conservation sites in Northwest Iowa. In September of 2025, we used three colors of pan traps (blue, yellow, and white) to investigate pollinator communities at a small, reconstructed prairie (Buena Vista County Park) and a nearby partially restored native prairie (The Nature Conservancy Glacial Hills Preserve). We also …

Geographic Trends In North American Tornado Risk: A 75 Year Analysis, Thomas Tracy, Todd Tracy Apr 2026

Geographic Trends In North American Tornado Risk: A 75 Year Analysis, Thomas Tracy, Todd Tracy

Celebration of Research

In recent years, many meteorologists have claimed that ‘tornado alley’ has shifted over the last decades toward the east. We wanted to see if this claim holds true. We searched online for databases containing information on all US and all Canada tornadoes. By visualizing the data, we were able to find some trends in rating and the number of tornadoes over time. Using a program we wrote in R, we calculated the geographical average for tornadoes for each year. We also weighted this average by the rated magnitude of each tornado and by the number of deaths from each tornado. …

Recent Wetland Elevation Dynamics In Coastal Louisiana, Usa, Elizabeth Harris Apr 2026

Recent Wetland Elevation Dynamics In Coastal Louisiana, Usa, Elizabeth Harris

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal marshes globally are increasingly vulnerable to accelerating relative sea-level rise (RSLR), which threatens their capacity to maintain elevation through feedbacks among sediment supply, vegetation productivity, hydrology, and soil processes. Although many marshes can persist under moderate rates of sea-level rise through vertical accretion and belowground biomass production, this resilience is strongly constrained by sediment availability and subsurface processes such as autocompaction and organic matter decomposition. High accretion is often assumed to confer marsh resilience; however, subsurface processes, particularly autocompaction driven by surface loading, can substantially offset elevation gains. Coastal Louisiana experiences among the highest rates of RSLR worldwide due …

The study analyzed local governance in implementing green building regulations in a city in Metro Manila, Philippines, through a case study. Compliance rates were calculated by comparing projects with Green Building Compliance Certification to those with Green Building Pre-Compliance Certification issued by the city. The Delphi method explored environmental sustainability implications of compliance, while key informant interviews and policy landscape analysis identified the factors affecting Green Building Code management. Fewer than half of the pre-compliance and construction permit holders also received occupancy certificates. Three rounds of the Delphi method were conducted, resulting in consensus on recommendations to enhance governance mechanisms …

Optimizing Seedling Emergence In Sagebrush-Steppe Restoration: The Role Of Sowing Depth, Seed Coatings, And Microsite Amendments, John Thomas Stromberg Apr 2026

Optimizing Seedling Emergence In Sagebrush-Steppe Restoration: The Role Of Sowing Depth, Seed Coatings, And Microsite Amendments, John Thomas Stromberg

Theses and Dissertations

Seedling survival of fall-sown seeds over the winter and subsequent emergence in spring is a major demographic bottleneck limiting recruitment in dryland restoration. Deeper sowing can place seeds in a more favorable soil environment with more stable moisture and moderated temperatures, but emergence from these depths is often constrained by the greater distance seedlings must grow to reach the surface and by mechanical resistance in the upper soil layer. In the first chapter of this thesis, we evaluated the use of a slow-release gibberellic acid (GA₃) polymer seed coating to aid in seedling emergence from deeper sowing depths. We compared …
