Investigations regarding the chemical and milling characteristics of some of the various varieties of wheat grown in the State have been carried on since the season of 1904. This is, however, the first report of the investigations that has been published. The work was started with the hope of assisting in the determination of the varieties of wheat best adapted to the State. While, of course, the variety which does not yield well but which has excellent chemical and milling characteristics is not desirable, yet on the other hand, as has already been so often pointed out, neither is the …

What Forestry Has Done, Treadwell Cleaveland Jr.
What Forestry Has Done, Treadwell Cleaveland Jr.
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Many people in this country think that forestry had never been tried until the government began to practice it upon the national forests. Yet forestry is practiced by every civilized country in the world, except China and Turkey. It gets results which can be got in no other way, and which are necessary to the general welfare. Forestry is not a new thing. It was discussed two thousand years ago, and it has been studied and applied with increasing thoroughness ever since.
The principles of forestry are everywhere the same. They rest on natural laws, which are at work everywhere …

Halictus monstrificus Mor. (temporalis Arnoldi. 1.)

Pb1908-27 Loss From Cornstalk Disease In Custer County, Nebraska, During The Winter Of 1906-1907 (Distributed January 1908, Reprinted December 1930), F.J. Alway, A.T. Peters
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
"Cornstalk disease" is the name given to the cause or causes of death of cattle allowed to run in fields of standing cornstalks from which the ears have been gathered. It is probable that "many different maladies have been included under this name." In Nebraska, however, there is such a similarity in the symptoms reported by the farmers that it seems probable that the great majority of the losses attributed to cornstalk disease are really due to some common cause. As to the exact nature of this cause nothing is known. However, various theories have been advanced, and methods of …

Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Revision Of The Non-Combed Eyed Siphonaptera, Karl Jordan, Nathaniel Charles Rothschild
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Introduction (excerpt)
The importance of certain species of fleas in relation to the epidemiology of plague has been so amply demonstrated (see Journal of Hygiene, volumes VI 1906, p. 426, and VII 1907, p. 395) that an explanation appears scarcely necessary for our publishing a paper dealing with a revision of the non-pectinated eyed Siphonaptera. With the demonstration that fleas are capable of transmitting plague, their study at once ceased to be the mere hobby of a small group of entomological specialists. An accurate knowledge of fleas, both with regard to their structure and biology, is at present a …

The Arrhenuri Of The United States, Ruth Marshall
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The Arrhenuri comprise the largest genus of the Hydrachnidre, and one of the most highly differentiated and widely distributed. The genus is easily recognized by the following characters. The thick chitinous covering of the body is pierced by large pores. A circular furrow on the dorsal side marks off an area which is entirely enclosed in the female, in the male usually open onto the posterior extension of the body. The females are oval in form and much alike; the males are smaller and vary greatly from each other and from the females. They are characterized by a posterior prolongation …

The genus Diomorus ,walker has the mesepisternum deeply incised above the middle and will therefore have to be placed in the Toryminae, where it can be separated from the other genera by the tooth on the hind femora. In his classification of the Chalcidoidea, Dr. Ashmead has used the presence or absence of teeth on the hind femora as a secondary character to separate the Toryminre and the Monodontomerinre. This will have to be dropped or at least modified to show the above exception.
