Some Methods Of Vegetative Reproduction In Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Presl, Mildred Frances Hubel
Some Methods Of Vegetative Reproduction In Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Presl, Mildred Frances Hubel
Bachelors’ Theses
Nephrolepis cordifolia, Presl is reproduced by means of spores, rhizomes, runners, and tubers. Little work has been done, however, on the tubers. In fact, the tubers are generally thought to be for storage only and consequently of little importance. At the Royal Palm Nurseries, Oneca, Florica where the plants for this study were obtained, the tubers were removed and thrown away. When a request was made for a large plant with the tubers, they replied: "We cannot supply the large cordifolia with the bulbs, as they were pruned off all our plants. They do not present a very attractive appearance …

Bulletin No. 200 - Maintaining Potato Yields By Hill Selection, George Stewart, D. C. Tingey
UAES Bulletins
Utah's agriculture has passed definitely out of its pioneer period. Single-cropping, whether to wheat, to potatoes, or to sugar-beets, during the past few years has been forced from its last stronghold. The earmarks of mature agriculture are already visible. Of these, there are four important ones: (1) the production of both crops and livestock; (2) careful manuring and irrigation; (3) good crop rotations; and (4) the use of high-grade parental stock, that is, prepotent sires for livestock and strong and healthy seed for crops.
Bulletin No. 199 - Mutual Irrigation Companies In Utah, Wells A. Hutchins
Bulletin No. 199 - Mutual Irrigation Companies In Utah, Wells A. Hutchins
UAES Bulletins
Cooperation has been an important factor in the development of agriculture under irrigation in Utah. The Mormon pioneers in the Great Basin were the first Anglo-Saxons to practice irrigation on an extensive scale in the United States; hence, it is significant that from the first their irrigation work was accomplished largely as a result of community effort. Private diversions of water there were, of course, even in the earliest times, but for years they were quite out of place in an environment that took quick toll of those individualists who scorned the protection of numbers and refused to cooperate. The …
Further Experiments With Poisoned Baits For Grasshoppers, M. H. Swenk
Further Experiments With Poisoned Baits For Grasshoppers, M. H. Swenk
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In the summer of 1922 a series of experiments was carried on at the Scotts Bluff Experiment Substation for the purpose of finding, if possible, a formula for preparing an inexpensive and efficient poisoned bait for grasshoppers that could be recommended to the farmers of the North Platte valley, and also of learning more concerning the relative values of certain attractants and poisons commonly used in such baits, as well as the best time to scatter them to obtain the most satisfactory results. While the results were fairly conclusive from a qualitative standpoint, the time was not available in the …
A Study Of The Seasonal History Of Alfalfa Flowers As Related To Seed Production, John W. Carlson
A Study Of The Seasonal History Of Alfalfa Flowers As Related To Seed Production, John W. Carlson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A few researches have been concerned with the structure and pollination of alfalfa flowers. Others have considered the biological problems concerned in the pollination and fecundation of the flowers. In none of these studies, however, has an attempt been made to follow carefully the alfalfa flowers through various stages of development. Nor has any effort been made to determine what effect the condition and duration of these stages may have upon the resulting seed crop.
The work that follows is a study of the changes through which the alfalfa flowers pass during the season while functioning as organs of seed …
Distributional List Of The Birds In Utah, Clarence Cottam
Distributional List Of The Birds In Utah, Clarence Cottam
Theses and Dissertations
Systematic ornithology has been woefully neglected in Utah. While this state has a number of men who know her birds and who have aroused interest in them, they have produced no published record of what we have. So far as the writer knows there is no adequate, representative, or systematic collection of Utah species within the state. Utah has, however, been fortunate in having a nuraber of expert ornithologists collect and study the bird life of different sections of bar territory.
Bulletin No. 201 - Economic Insects In Some Streams Of Northern Utah, James G. Needham, Reed O. Christenson
Bulletin No. 201 - Economic Insects In Some Streams Of Northern Utah, James G. Needham, Reed O. Christenson
UAES Bulletins
The food of trout in our mountain streams is mainly insects. It is, in part, land insects that fall on the water and are taken as they float upon its surface, but in a much larger part it is insects that grow up in the water and are taken in their immature stages. These are the constant and dependable food-supply. They have been little studied hitherto. This bulletin is a report of a preliminary examination of some Utah streams, made for the purpose of discovering what forms of life are present in the streams and in what relative abundance. Some …

Babcock Testing - Principles And Uses, L. K. Crowe, H. P. Davis
Babcock Testing - Principles And Uses, L. K. Crowe, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The manufacturing of dairy products on a commercial scale began about the middle of the nineteenth century and was greatly stimulated by the development of the centrifugal cream separator in the late eighties. The invention of the Babcock test in the early nineties overcame some of the difficulties that had developed in paying for milk upon its butterfat content, since it was early recognized that milk varied widely in that respect.

The Pine Tipmoth In The Nebraska National Forest, M. H. Swenk
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
On May 8, 1911, Mr. Smith Riley, the District Forester, with headquarters at Denver, in a letter to Acting Supervisor Pierce at Halsey, requested that the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station take up energetically the investigation of the pine tipmoth in the Nebraska National Forest. This request being presented to the Department by Mr. Pierce later in the month resulted in the presentation of the problem to the Experiment Station Council as a proposed Station project. The project was approved on May 31, 1911, and the expenses of the investigations of 1911 and 1912 that are reported upon in this bulletin …
Crop Production In India, J. E. Weaver
Crop Production In India, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
It is rarely that one finds a book on the subject of agriculture of such broad scope, fascinating interest, and so full of the applications of ecology and physiology as Howard's " Crop-production in India." In every chapter numerous problems of plant growth in relation to environment are brought before the reader in such a stimulating manner that one can scarcely conclude but that ecology will reach its greatest usefulness in the field of general agriculture. It is a book to which every student of environment should have ready access.

Ec27-811 Harvesting Wheat In Nebraska With The Combined Harvester Thresher 1926, Arthur G. George
Ec27-811 Harvesting Wheat In Nebraska With The Combined Harvester Thresher 1926, Arthur G. George
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Frequent inquiry from wheat growers in Nebraska and others as to the relative merits of the combined harvester-thresher as an efficienct and economical harvesting machine led the Nebraska Agricultural College to make a study of this problem in the summer of 1926. The work was carried on by the Departments of Rural Economics and Agricultural Engineering, cooperating with the United States Department of Agriculture which was conducting a similar survey in different parts of the United States. Perkins county, Nebraska, was the area selected for study as it is more or less typical of those parts of the state where …
The Ontogeny Of The Vascular Elements In Zea Mays, George L. Cross
The Ontogeny Of The Vascular Elements In Zea Mays, George L. Cross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
- The vascular bundles of Zea mays are of the monocot type, except that true amphivasal bundles are found only in the leaves.
- The xylem and phloem are arranged collaterally, with the xylem occupying the part of the bundle nearer the center of the stem.
- The xylem is composed of from 2 to 4 protoxylem elements, and two pitted vessels. The elements of the protoxylem are arranged in a radial row, and consist of 1 or 2 annular on the inside, and 1 or 2 spiral elements on the outside. Sometimes the outermost element (in respect to the stem) is a …

A Study Of Pollen, Sterility, And Blossoming Dates Of Plum Varieties In The Experimental Nursery At South Dakota State College During The Spring Of 1926, Russell W. Vance
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Agricultural Census of the United States for 1920 shows that plums rank second to apples in value in comparison with the other orchard fruits, small fruits and grapes produced in South Dakota. There was an eighty-two percent increase in the value of all orchard fruits produced during the year 1919 over the year 1909. The fact that the majority of the more important commercial varieties of plums are entirely self-sterile and others more or less self-sterile is often one reason for the total or partial failure of the orchard to produce fruit when a plot is planted to one …

A Consideration Of Methods Of Securing Historical Price And Production Data And A Survey Of Their Relationship For South Dakota, Owen L. Dawson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In our studies of prices we will analyze the present prices; discuss the use of price date now available and consider methods of collecting further data. As South Dakota is one of several states or countries producing a surplus of crops and livestock for market, production for the United States and for the world, of certain products, must be considered as affecting the farm prices in South Dakota.
The Effect Of Treatment With Ethylene Chlorhydrin Gas Upon The Respiration Of Dormant Potato Tubers, Leon M. Pultz
The Effect Of Treatment With Ethylene Chlorhydrin Gas Upon The Respiration Of Dormant Potato Tubers, Leon M. Pultz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chemicals have long been in use as mean of eliminating or abbreviating the rest period of various plant organs. Usually, however, they have been in the hands of workers who were interested only in forcing the resting parts into growth and not in determining the physiological effect of the chemicals upon them. Since Appleman (1) presents a very comprehensive review of the earlier literature pertaining to the subject, it will not be again presented here. More recently Denny (4, 5) has given now impetus to this work by demonstrating that ethylene chlorhydrin and various other chemicals will greatly shorten the …
The Testing Of Coniferous Tree Seeds At The School Of Forestry, Yale University, 1906-1926, James W. Toumey, Clark L. Stevens
The Testing Of Coniferous Tree Seeds At The School Of Forestry, Yale University, 1906-1926, James W. Toumey, Clark L. Stevens
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
Quality in forest tree seed centers in (a) origin; (b) genuineness; (c) purity; and (d) viability. The purchaser should insist on knowing the origin of the seed and the locality where it was collected.
Without seed testing establishments for investigating forest tree seeds by standardized methods under an established technique, nurserymen and foresters will continue to sow seed beds and undertake direct seeding without an adequate knowledge of the origin, genuineness, purity, and viability of the seeds used.
Factors Controlling Germination And Early Survival In Oaks, Clarence F. Korstian
Factors Controlling Germination And Early Survival In Oaks, Clarence F. Korstian
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
There is little information available upon the seed and seedling characteristics of the American oaks. Among the fundamental problems in American silviculture, those which relate to seed efficiency are especially important. The future productiveness of the hardwood forests in which chestnut has been an important·element rests largely upon seed and sprout efficiency. Seed efficiency is governed by (I) seed production, (2) seed distribution, and (3) the factors affecting the reproductive value of the seed, such as viability, storage of seed in the litter of the forest floor, and destruction by insects and rodents.

A Second Progress Report Of The Results Secured In Treating Pure White Pine Stands On Experimental Plots At Keene, New Hampshire, Ralph C. Hawley
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
In October, 1905, nineteen permanent sample plots were established in the white pine type near Keene, New Hampshire, by the United States Forest Service in cooperation with the Faulkner and Colony Manufacturing Company on lands owned by the latter.! The plots were remeasured in 1909 and again in 1915 by representatives of the United States Forest Service. After the 1915 measurement the plots were turned over to the Yale School of Forestry. In 1920 the plots were remeasured for the third time, three additional plots were established and six of the original plots were discontinued. A fourth remeasurement was made …

Some Ecological Aspects Of Agriculture In The Prairie, J. E. Weaver
Some Ecological Aspects Of Agriculture In The Prairie, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
It is of more than passing interest that the cereal crops, namely: corn, spring and winter wheat, oats, barley, sorghum, and millet, have their center of greatest production in that portion of the United States originally covered by grassland. In fact, some are grown almost entirely in the grassland region, and other crops, as alfalfa and flax, which are similar in growth habits to wild legumes, wild flaxes, etc., growing among the grasses, also have their greatest acreage in grassland. Likewise, the largest areas of fruit production, including such tree fruits as apples, peaches, pears, and bush fruits as blackberries, …
A Study Of Certain Physical And Chemical Characteristics Of Flaxseed And Of Linseed Oil, With Especial Reference To Date Of Harvest, Leo F. Puhr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From the review of the foregoing literature on flax, it is evident that little work has ever been done on the chemical composition of flax. Most of the work on flax up to the present time has been confined to the diseases of flax, principally the securing of varieties that are resistant to wilt. In an attempt to secure information in regard to the factors affecting the physical characteristics and chemical composition of flaxseed the following work has been done in this experiment: 1. The effect of time of harvesting upon physical characteristics of the seed. 2. The relation of …
