Bulletin No. 248 - Results Of Seven Years Of Egg-Laying Contests, Byron Alder Apr 1934

Bulletin No. 248 - Results Of Seven Years Of Egg-Laying Contests, Byron Alder

UAES Bulletins

The Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contests were begun on November 1, 1924, and continued until October 23, 1931. Up until this time the interest in poultry-breeding for egg production in this intermountain section was extremely limited; furthermore, there were few flocks on which trap nest and pedigree breeding records were kept.

The primary object in conducting these contests was to stimulate an interest in the breeding of better poultry. An egg-laying contest makes it possible for the poultry raiser, trying to get started in poultry-breedng work on a limited scale, to obtain accurate individual egg records of some of his pullets …

Vitamin B(B,) And G(B2) Content Of Cottonseed Products, May L. Whitsitt Apr 1934

Vitamin B(B,) And G(B2) Content Of Cottonseed Products, May L. Whitsitt

Field and Laboratory

Cotton is a raw material which is more and more closely allying the agricultural and chemical industries. Because of the considerable industrial importance of cotton to the South and because of the recognized nutritional value of cottonseed meal in cattle feeding, a study of cottonseed products has been undertaken in order to learn more of their possibilities as nutrients. Stevens (8) in 1930 reported his finding that cottonseed meal was a rich source of both vitamins B(B), and G(B2). This investigation has for its object a comparative study of cottonseed meal, oil, and hulls with respect to their vitamin B …

Type Collection Of The Writings Of Robert T. Hill, Ellis W. Shuler

Field and Laboratory

Dr. Robert T. Hill has signally honored the Geological Department of Southern Methodist University by donating to its library the type collection of his writings with an index and annotated bibliography. This collection covers the writings of one of America's leading geologists over a period of nearly half a century. Interesting and valuable in every phase of geology, it is the court of final reference for the student of the history of Texas stratigraphy.

A.A.P.G. Meeting At Dallas, Ellis W. Shuler Apr 1934

A.A.P.G. Meeting At Dallas, Ellis W. Shuler

Field and Laboratory

Geology students of Southern Methodist University found a rare opportunity in attending the annual meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in Dallas, March 21-24, 1934. This meeting brought together more than 1500 professional geologists, world wide in distribution. The Association is one of the largest and strongest of scientific bodies. Its publications and programs are of outstanding interest in the field of geology. The program for 1934 was one of unusual merit and was distinguished by the number of papers on geological principles and pure science rather than applied geology.

The Distribution Of Pectinatella Magnifica Leidy In The United States, S. W. Geiser Apr 1934

The Distribution Of Pectinatella Magnifica Leidy In The United States, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

In 1851, Leidy described from the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia, the interesting Bryozoan, Pectinatella magnifica. Since then, it has been recorded from a number of other localities in America and Europe. The exact distribution, however (for America, at least) is still only partially known. Brown1 has recently published a careful study of the biology of this species; and the present writer has studied, since 1928, the distribution of this species in Iowa, as well as its periodicity of abundance.

The Distribution Of Population In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Edwin J. Foscue Apr 1934

The Distribution Of Population In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Edwin J. Foscue

Field and Laboratory

The Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas represents one of the most densely populated areas of southwestern United States. Its average density, 40.9 people per square mile, is nearly twice that for the state as a whole. The four counties of the Valley area include large tracts of nearly vacant ranch country. Were figures available for the irrigated area alone, the average density per square mile would be much greater.

Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig Apr 1934

Contributions To The Anatomy And Physiology Of The Heart In The Turtle, David J. Twohig

Bachelors’ Theses

The heart in any animal, and especially in higher animals, is an important organ. It is the purpose of this paper to consider such an organ from the anatomical and physiological basis as it exists in the turtle.

The turtle was chosen as the subject for many reasons. The first one of these reasons was because the heart of the turtle closely.resembles the most complex of hearts in structure and action. The second was because the heart is quite typical of the members of Class Reptilia. The third reason was because the speciments are readily obtainable.

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin Apr 1934

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Aortic Arches Of The Acanthias Vulgaris, Wendell Corwin

Bachelors’ Theses

The spiny dogfish is a small shark that averages about two feet in length and three pounds in weight. It is called spiny because of the presence of a prominent spine on the boarder of each dorsal fin. The species has a wide distribution in the North Atlantic, occurring plentifully on the American and European shores, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. The fish swim in enormous schools and are constantly in motion. The dogfish has no economic importance but is universally used for dissection in the zoological laboratory.

The Prairie, J. E. Weaver, T. J. Fitzpatrick Apr 1934

The Prairie, J. E. Weaver, T. J. Fitzpatrick

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

This research is the third of a series of investigations of the prairie. The first dealt with the environment of the prairie (Weaver and Himmel, 1931). The second was concerned with the ecology and relative importance of the dominant grasses (Weaver and Fitzpatrick, 1932). The present study treats of the structure of the vegetation in the several types of prairie, the secondary grasses, the ecology of the forbs, together with a general survey of contacts, invasion, and succession. These investigations have resulted from years of intimate association with the great grasslands of North America. They were made in an endeavor …
