Bulletin No. 249 - Farm Versus Village Living In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes

UAES Bulletins

This is the first of a series of bulletins based on a study of Utah village life begun in 1927. The purpose of the investigation was to determine, under prevailing conditions, whether for farm people farm living is less desirable than village living. Four type villages were selected in as many counties for field studies.

A New Giant Camel, Titanotylopus Nebraskensis, Gen. Et Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz May 1934

A New Giant Camel, Titanotylopus Nebraskensis, Gen. Et Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour, C. Bertrand Schultz

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The purpose of this bulletin is to figure and describe a .amel brought to light in the field season of 1933, which seems to be the giant of all camels found in the State. The specimen consists of the right ramus with the symphysial portion. The mandible is 26% inches long, or about the length of one's outstretched arm to the finger tips. This jaw is nine inches longer than that of Camelops kansanus. Such an extraordinary jaw indicates a camel nearly twice as large as Alticamelus altus. In reference to its unusual size we are proposing for it the …

A New Rhinoceros Mount, Trigonias Osborni, Erwin H. Barbour May 1934

A New Rhinoceros Mount, Trigonias Osborni, Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

On February 9, 1934, a pair of rhinoceroses, Trigonias osborni, was installed in the Founder's Room in Morrill Hall, the Nebraska State Museum. They are figured and accorded brief consideration here in order to maintain the printed records of such acquisitions in the Nebraska State Museum. The two skeletons, carefully posed, were put in the south wall case to be associated with a pair of Diceratherium from Morrill County. and the mounted skeletons of two Brown County Te leo ceras. In this gallery two long built-in wall cases insure ample facilities for the proper installation of six rhinoceroses, for each …

Nuclear And Cell Division In The Root Tip Of Iris Versicolor, Mary Maxentia Mahoney May 1934

Nuclear And Cell Division In The Root Tip Of Iris Versicolor, Mary Maxentia Mahoney

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer found that very little work has been done on the somatic mitosis of Iris versicolor L. Some interesting accounts of karyokinesis in the root tips of some monocots have been written. Schaffner (1898) made a detailed study of nuclear and cell division in the root tips of the Allium cepa. He observed that the spindle originated from centrospheres, and that the most typical resting nuclei occured some distance back of the tip beyond the actively dividing region. In good stained material the resting nuclei had one or two large nucleoli and a very distinct chromatin net …

Bachelors’ Theses

Basketball was invented by Dr. Naismith at the Springfield Y.M.C.A Training School in 1892. Since its invention, the sport has made great progress which now has the same seasonal appeal during the winter as football in the fall and baseball in the Spring.

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain May 1934

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain

Bachelors’ Theses

The turtle is a reptile belonging to the order Chelonia. Because it is so very abundant and its size so convenient it has been much used for class work and to a certain extent has been studied rather thoroughly by private workers. Each one, however, stressing his or her own particular point of interest especially, the turtle is attractive to students of Comparative Anatomy because of the fact that it has retained more of the primitive characteristics of the ancestral form from which the mammals are descended than any other readily available reptile.

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Arterial System Of The Turtle, Sylvester J. Schroeder May 1934

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Arterial System Of The Turtle, Sylvester J. Schroeder

Bachelors’ Theses

Turtles are reptiles in which the body is wide and short, and is enclosed in a shell composed of a dorsal shield, the carapace, and a ventral shield the plastron. The shell of three of the species is composed of large external, epidermal, horny plates. These latter consist, in the carapace, of the flattened ribs and the flattened trunk vertebrae which coalesce with overlying dermal bony plates, and are surrounded on the circumference of the shell by a series of marginal dermal bony plates; in the plastron they consist of exclusively dermal plates, there being no sternum. The carapace and …

The Effect Of The Nitrogen Fixation And Of Aeration Upon The Growth Of Yeast In Culture Media, Syrene C. Bernstein May 1934

The Effect Of The Nitrogen Fixation And Of Aeration Upon The Growth Of Yeast In Culture Media, Syrene C. Bernstein

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject of yeast has been widely studied from many viewpoints; we can find many bacteriological, physiological, and chemical papers on the subject. Besides the purely scientific work on yeast, there are numerous industrial investigations on this subject, since yeast growth and the products of yeast growth form the foundation for such important industries as the distilling, brewing, baking industries as well as commercial yeast manufacture. The effect of nitrogen fixation has been treated from all of these angles, scientific and industrial, and the investigations include the form in which the nitrogen is most easily assimilated, the manner of the …

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler May 1934

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Antidating written human history the dung of animals, chalk, marl, wood ashes and other substances were probably used to increase the productivity of the soil. These practises found their way into the earliest farming activities of the Chinese, Persians, Greeks and Romans. (3)(11) In the Hebrew scriptures mention is made of the "Dung Gate". (10) This was undoubtedly a place given to the marketing of manures. That manure was used as a soil amendment in Asia Minor in Biblical times is not questioned. The famous Roman agricultural writer Cato (234 B.C.) wrote at length on manures and their handling. He …

A Study Of The Oviposition And Nymphal Development Of Paratrioza Cockerelli (Sulc) Upon Various Host Plants, Wylie L. Thomas May 1934

A Study Of The Oviposition And Nymphal Development Of Paratrioza Cockerelli (Sulc) Upon Various Host Plants, Wylie L. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The potato psyllid, Paratrioza cockerelli (Sulc) as stated by E. O. Essig, (1917) is a native of the western states.

Since the great outbreak of psyllid yellows in Utah potato fields in 1927 much interest has been given to this insect. The close relationship between the nymphs of P. cockerelli and the disease, psyllid yellows, is a well known fact, but as yet the causative factor by which this disease is produced still remains unknown.

Because of the severity of the disease to potatoes and the importance of knowing something of the host plants of P. cockerelli, the writer, …
