The Life History Of The Dewberry Fruit Worm Cacoecia Rosaceana (Harr.) In Utah, Merlin W. Allen May 1937

The Life History Of The Dewberry Fruit Worm Cacoecia Rosaceana (Harr.) In Utah, Merlin W. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study has been to determine the identity and the life history of certain larvae attacking dewberry fruits and foliage in a few sections of Utah. The dewberry fruit worm as it was called until it was definitely identified the oblique-banded leaf-roller, was first observed by farmers at Granite and Butlerville in 1932. Since 1934 it has been found affecting dewberries in other parts of northern Utah.

This investigation was begun in the spring of 1935 and continued until the fall of 1936, being made possible through the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Entomology, and with …

Dinosaur Tracks At The Fourth Crossing Of The Paluxy River Near Glen Rose, Texas, Ellis W. Shuler Apr 1937

Dinosaur Tracks At The Fourth Crossing Of The Paluxy River Near Glen Rose, Texas, Ellis W. Shuler

Field and Laboratory

Erosion has laid bare at least eight localities in Somervell County, Texas, showing dinosaur tracks in the Glen Rose limestone. It is with keen regret that this article records the disappearance of one of the most notable of these exhibits, the well known track locality at the fourth crossing of the Paluxy River, about four miles west of the town of Glen Rose. Stream erosion, which brought to view there a superb collection of tracks, continued its work too well and wiped out the exhibit as an eraser wipes out a schoolboy's blackboard drawing.

Notes On The Acrididae (Orthoptera) Of Iowa, Herbert Knutson

Field and Laboratory

Considerable taxonomic work has been published on the grasshoppers of many of the midwestern states, such as that of Hebard on species of South Dakota ('25), Kansas ('31), Minnesota ('32), and Illinois ('34). Also, some work of economic character has been done in each of the midwestern states.

Age Of The Malone Fauna, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Apr 1937

Age Of The Malone Fauna, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Field and Laboratory

The geological age of the Malone fauna, described in 1905 by Cragin, has been a subject of considerable uncertainty…. The writer spent the summers of 1934 and 1935 in the Malone area, mapping it with plane table on a scale of one inch to a thousand feet. Extensive collections of fossils gathered at both old and new localities were referred to twenty-five carefully measured stratigraphical sections.

Blue Sun: A Colloidal Explanation, Phil Wagley Apr 1937

Blue Sun: A Colloidal Explanation, Phil Wagley

Field and Laboratory

During a severe duststorm at Dallas, Texas, on March 17, 1935, the disk of the sun appeared deep blue in color. The dust of the storm was composed largely of small grains of quartz, floating in the atmosphere at a great height, perhaps 12,000 feet or more. Reports from the Dallas Airport Station indicated that the duststorms that came during the spring of 1935 often reached this height, and at times the ceiling was 13,500 feet. In western Texas and Oklahoma, these duststorms frequently produced high potential electrical charges in the atmosphere, causing sparks to be drawn from metal parts …

Meteorite Scars In Ancient Rocks, John D. Boon, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Apr 1937

Meteorite Scars In Ancient Rocks, John D. Boon, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Field and Laboratory

In a previous paper the writers suggested that some explosion structures currently attributed to volcanism may actually record impacts of giant meteorites which fell during the geological past. It is the purpose of this article to show how meteorite craters and their underlying structures might be preserved, and to evaluate the meteoritic hypothesis as an explanation for three structures which tentatively have been assigned to other origins.

In Memoriam, Lawrence Bruner, Myron H. Swenk

Nebraska Bird Review

On January 30, 1937, at his home at 3033 Deakin Street in Berkeley, California, Lawrence Bruner, pioneer American economic entomologist and a world authority on grasshoppers and related insects (Orthoptera), as well as the person who more than any other individual was responsible for the organization of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union, passed away after a severe illness of a few days that culminated a rather extended period of gradually declining health. It is difficult to epitomize any account of the life accomplishments of this man, because they were so many and varied, and perhaps for this purpose there …

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Feb 1937

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Twenty-Five Years Of Agricultural Extension Work In South Dakota, Gilbert S. Weaver Jan 1937

Twenty-Five Years Of Agricultural Extension Work In South Dakota, Gilbert S. Weaver

SDSU Extension Publications Archive

Organization of Agricultural Extension Work in South Dakota during March, 1912,

Marked the beginning-of a-movement in agricultural education that was destined to influence the economic and social life of rural people in South Dakota for twenty-five years. Only the future will reveal its limitations. Agricultural Extension Work had its inception in Brown county. Farmers, business men, a railroad, a mail order house, and county commissioners of Brown county had formed the Better Farming Association. This organization took the initiative in promoting and inaugurating county agent work. During the span of years from March, 1912, to March, 1937, Agricultural Extension work …

Studies Of Prenatal Development In Farm Animals, L. M. Winters

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The central objective of these studies has been to gather as accurate data as possible regarding normal prenatal development in farm animals. Once this is established as a base we or other workers will be in a position to study the specific effects of unfavorable environments, such as deficiency rations, excess fat, etc. Our work has progressed far enough so that we are now incorporating some of the latter in our studies.

Javma37-43 Anthrax In Swine, L. Van Es Jan 1937

Javma37-43 Anthrax In Swine, L. Van Es

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Anthrax is not commonly considered so important a menace to swine as it is to other forms of live stock, in which the disease is apt to declare itself with terrifying severity. In comparison with the marked mortality frequently observed in cattle, the tangible losses caused by anthrax in swine seem negligible. As recent as 25 years ago, there still were observers who sincerely doubted the occurrence of the disease in hogs and this opinion found some support in the many reported failures to induce the infection in that animal species by artificial methods.

Annual Report: 1937

Cherry County (Nebraska) Extension: Historical Documents

The Extension program was supported by the Cherry County Farm Bureau for the year ending November 20, 1937. Farm family memberships were the basis for securing funds to finance the educational budget adopted by the directors of the county Farm Bureau. Added financial assistance was given by the Cherry County Commissioners. Business houses at the county seat subscribed funds for the calf show and other special events sponsored as a part of the year's program. The total cost of the year's program amounted to $2272.52.

Eighteen men elected geographically, four women elected from project groups, and the president of the …
