Ancient Maples Of The Central Washington Region, George F. Beck Nov 1944

Ancient Maples Of The Central Washington Region, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

When I began work on the petrified logs of the general Vantage area some 13 years ago, it became apparent at once that maple-like woods are commonplace in the main (Vantage) raft forest and slightly less abundant in two rooted units of the Yakima Canyon. So widely do these woods range throughout the structural variations found in modern maples that little success has attended the efforts to assign them to nominal species. The extremes can readily be established but few hints exist as to the boundaries between them.

Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl Oct 1944

Poultry Progress: How Long Should A Chicken Live?, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Increased laying flock mortality has disturbed thoughtful hatcherymen, producers, processors, and research workers for several years, and very properly so, because hens which die before their time serve no useful purpose, except to raise in our minds the question, "Why?"

Seeding Grass On Deteriorated Aspen Range, A. Perry Plummer, George Stewart Oct 1944

Seeding Grass On Deteriorated Aspen Range, A. Perry Plummer, George Stewart

Aspen Bibliography

The herbaceous undercover on much of the aspen range in the Intermountain region is badly deteriorated. These areas, naturally highly productive, when revegetated can contribute greatly towards a much needed supply of range forage. One of the major obstacles to successful seeding has been the difficulty of getting the seeds covered with soil since both standing and fallen trees interfere with the use of drills, harrows, or other machinery. In the search for methods to overcome this difficulty, it was found that for open aspen stands the covering of seeds is unnecessary when the right precautions are taken in other …

A Cyto-Genetical Study Of Habronbracon Juglandis, Joan Meyer Oct 1944

A Cyto-Genetical Study Of Habronbracon Juglandis, Joan Meyer

Bachelors’ Theses

A cyto-gentical study was attempted of the males of the Ichneumonoid wasp Habrobracon juglandis (ashm.) The larval of this wasp are parasitic on the larval of a flour moth Ephestid kuekniella (zeller). The males of this wasp were disected and slides were made of the testes. Different staining techniques were used in order to determine which ones would give the best results.

The Development Of Bone In The Chick Embryo, Helen M. Koelsch Oct 1944

The Development Of Bone In The Chick Embryo, Helen M. Koelsch

Bachelors’ Theses

The day by day development of the bone in the chicken embryo as determined by the fixing and staining of embryos for each twenty-four hour growth period during the time of greatest skeletal development, is the subject of this paper. The stage in the embryological history of the chick during which the most important phases of bone development occur was determined to be the period between the seventh and the sixteenth days of incubation. It is therefore the purpose of this investigation to give an account of the growth and development of the bones of the ordinary domestic fowl as …

Histology Of The Stomach Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Lois Doerfler Oct 1944

Histology Of The Stomach Of The Common Green Snake, Thamnophis Sirtalis, Lois Doerfler

Bachelors’ Theses

This is another in the series treating the histology of the digestive tract of the reptile. Very little comparative work has been done on the digestive system as a whole and less attention has been paid to the stomach. Kendall (1940) and Cole (1941) devote a slight discussion to a general description of the reptilian stomach. The following report is a more detailed microscopic investigation of the anatomy of the stomach of one of the common species of snakes...

Nature And Degree Of Recovery Of Grassland From The Great Drought Of 1933 To 1940, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Oct 1944

Nature And Degree Of Recovery Of Grassland From The Great Drought Of 1933 To 1940, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

For eight years drought had prevailed in the mid- continental grasslands. The true prairie west of Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri had been woefully depleted. Mixed prairie farther westward to the Rocky Mountains had been nearly or entirely destroyed. But now the parched soil was wet once more, wet to a depth of several feet. The hot dry air was now warm and moist. The terrible dust storms had ceased. A changed environment had come at last, for this was the end of the long period of drought. Thus, in 1941 the long delayed recovery of vegetation began. The nature of …

The Utilization Of Grasses And Forbs In Relation To The Intensity Of Grazing In The Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, Noel Runyon Jul 1944

The Utilization Of Grasses And Forbs In Relation To The Intensity Of Grazing In The Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, Noel Runyon

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The principal occupation of the inhabitants in the Great Plains Region is livestock farming. The problems confronting the farmers and ranchers of this large area are many and varied. Not the least of these problems is the one of a proper stocking rate for the various types of ranges in order to secure a maximum production with the least in capital outlay and range deterioration. Another problem that has presented itself in recent years is the one of revegetating thousands of acres of marginal and semi-marginal land so that mother nature may again heal the marks of erosion and bring …

This project is a part of the year-to-year national study of production adjustments in which all states are cooperating with the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Department of Agriculture. The study was conducted under the …

Bulletin No. 314 - Gains Made By Cattle On Summer Range In Northern Utah, L. A. Stoddart Jun 1944

Bulletin No. 314 - Gains Made By Cattle On Summer Range In Northern Utah, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, in 1934, began experimental studies on the grazing of beef steers on mountainous summer range lands. Although the direct purpose of this work was to find whether supplementing phosphorus in the diet of grazing steers would increase their gains, many incidental observations proved of great interest. Among the most significant were the distribution and extent of weight gains through the summer grazing season and the effects of various factors such as weather upon the gains, causing them to vary greatly from year to year.

The Mosquitoes Of Nebraska, H. Douglas Tate, Doris B. Gates

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A survey of mosquitoes in Nebraska was conducted by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station during 1942 and 1943. The object of the study was to determine the species, relative abundance, seasonal occurrence, and principal breeding places of mosquitoes in representative areas of the state. This report presents the results of the survey, and, in addition, some records and observations made in Nebraska by other workers during and previous to initiation of the project.

Concretions In The Woodbine Sands Near Irving, Texas, George Loving

Field and Laboratory

It is the purpose of this paper to describe field relations of a group of concretions found in the Woodbine sands of the Cretaceous Gulf Series.
