Bulletin No. 315 - Biennial Report, 1942-1944

UAES Bulletins

The war years have made new demands on Station personnel and facilities. With fewer staff members and less adequate equipment the Station has not only carried on the regular project work, but the research program has been expanded, and numerous activities resulting from the emergency have been assumed.

The Station has taken a leading place in the victory food production program. Each year it has assumed the lead in a study of the wartime agricultural production capacity of the state and desirable crop and livestock adjustments studying all the agricultural assets and the ability to produce various crops.

As a …

The Tilt Of The Earth's Axis And The Consequences Thereof, John D. Boon Jan 1945

The Tilt Of The Earth's Axis And The Consequences Thereof, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

The earth goes around and sun once each year, and the plane of its motion is called the plane of the ecliptic. The earth rotates once each day; and the axis of its rotation lacks 23.5 degrees of being perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. This angle of 23.5 degrees is called the inclination of the earth's axis, and is one of the most important facts concerning the earth's motion, since it causes the seasons. If the axis of the earth were perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic the climate at any given point on the earth would …

Rocks and Rivers, by Ellis W. Shuler: A book written from the cultural and popular, rather than from the "scholarly" point of view; yet Rocks And Rivers will be found highly readable by both scientist and layman because of its perfect blending of scientific accuracy and detail and its down-to-earth language. It is richly illustrated with photographs of all types of geological formations gathered from almost every State in the Nation. Horticulture and Horticulturists in Early Texas, by Samuel Wood Geiser: An historical account of scientific horticulture in Texas, 1830-1930. It consists of two parts. Part I, "Horticulture" (seven chapters), …

The First Texas Academy Of Science, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Lack of an historical sense is the bane of many workers in the domain of Science…. The matter of the Texas Academy of Science is another illustration in point. This was organized in 1892 (as we at the present know it) at the University of Texas, and continued active for twenty years (until 1912), having in the meantime published twelve volumes of Transactions. It then ceased its activities and became extinct (like the Texas State Horticultural Society, which existed from 1875 to 1922.) In 1929, the present Texas State Academy of Science was reorganized by five men, and has continued …

Controlling The Ph Of Cultures Of Penicillium Notatum Through Its Carbon And Nitrogen Nutrition, Albert E. Dimond, George L. Peltier

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A survey of published material reveals relatively little information concerning the nutritional physiology of Penicillium notatum Westl. on synthetic media. Metabolism studies of P. notatum on various media have appeared to be incidental to the more pressing problem of producing penicillin quickly and in quantity. Fleming (1929) originally used a nutrient broth non-synthetic in nature. The Oxford group (Abraham et al., 1941) then adopted a modification of the so-called Czapek-Dox synthetic medium which supplies nitrogen as sodium nitrate and glucose as carbohydrate. Hobby, Meyer, and Chaffee (1942) suggested that brown sugar be substituted for glucose in this nutrient, with …

A large print found on top of a bookshelf in my office in the Plant Industry Building on East Campus, University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The office was previously occupied by Lloyd Anderson who was located at Scotts Bluff. Photo was taken in 1945 when the insecticide DDT dust was being applied to what appears to be a potato field.

The Scottsbluff Pinto Bean, J. H. Jensen Dec 1944

The Scottsbluff Pinto Bean, J. H. Jensen

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Scottsbluff Pinto is the name of a new variety of pinto field bean being released this year by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. The new bean variety is a selection from a cross between Great Northern and the common pinto bean. In a bean-breeding program conducted for the past several years by the Department of Plant Pathology, attempts have been made to obtain improved varieties of both field and garden beans for Nebraska. Although the breeding program was primarily concerned with the development of disease-resistant varieties, it was observed that Scottsbluff Pinto, possessing no notable disease resistance, has been outstanding …

Post War Farming Adjustments & Opportunities In South Dakota, C. R. Hoglund Nov 1944

Post War Farming Adjustments & Opportunities In South Dakota, C. R. Hoglund

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The approaching post-war period makes it desirable to focus attention on the opportunities and problems involved in the settlement of demobilized ex-service men and others on farms and ranches in South Dakota. It will also be essential to determine some of the desirable changes that have and should take place in size of farms in the various parts of the state. It is hoped that both prospective farmers and persons working on resettlement plans will profit by past farm experiences and by the opinions of farmers. A state-wide survey of post-war farming intentions and opinions of farmers regarding resettlement possibilities …
