Aspen For Pulp And Paper, E. R. Schafer Oct 1947

Aspen For Pulp And Paper, E. R. Schafer

Aspen Bibliography

Although the use of hardwoods for pulp and paper manufacture has increased considerably during recent years in the Lake States, the pulpwood consumed in this region consists largely of softwood species of which about one quarter is obtained from foreign sources. The wood resource, on the other hand, is comprised to a large extent of hardwoods, predominantly aspen, with the maples, oaks, and several other species available in lesser amounts. The present stand of aspen in the Lake States is estimated at nearly 20 million acres with a total volume of merchantable timber of about 32 1/2 million cords. The …

Thinking Of Others At Christmas, Anna M. Wilson Oct 1947

Thinking Of Others At Christmas, Anna M. Wilson

SDSU Extension Circulars

A true gift is a joy to give and a pleasure to receive. Such a gift doesn't just happen, it grows. It takes thought and planning. Then it takes some doing. Gifts made at home will not stretch the purse strings too far, and they can be hand-tailored to the friend. The best gift may not be wrapped in tissue and ribbon-it might be an invitation to a Christmas tea party. Thinking of others will make Christmas the most joyous season of the year-as it should be.

Bakererpes Fragilis N. G., N. Sp., A Cestode From The Nighthawk (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch Oct 1947

Bakererpes Fragilis N. G., N. Sp., A Cestode From The Nighthawk (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The examination of an Eastern Nighthawk (Chordeiles m. minor (Forster)), collected September 25, 1945, at Marion, Ohio, revealed numerous, very small cestodes free in the lumen of the small intestine. About fifty specimens were found, but, because of the delicate strobila of this species, few were entire.
Although these cestodes were very thin and translucent, the preparation of well-stained whole mounts presented unusual difficulty. Best results were obtained with a mixture of Ehrlich's and Delafield's haematoxylin stains. Frontal and transverse serial sections, cut at 10 and 15 μm, were made.
This cestode clearly belongs in the sub-family Dilepidinae, but, …

Aspen For Cabin Logs, Albert W. Sump Sep 1947

Aspen For Cabin Logs, Albert W. Sump

Aspen Bibliography

A plentiful supply of pine and cedar logs provided the early settlers of this country with a cheap and durable material for the construction of their homes and farm buildings. Only the axe and the ingenuity of the pioneer were needed to erect a shelter against the elements of nature. Early in the 19th century, the circular saw came into use resulting in a change in building construction. The pine stands in New England and in the Lake States, considered inexhaustible in the 19th century, were converted to lumber to construct buildings necessary for the rapid development of the country. …

Aspen For Core Stock, Arlie W. Toole Sep 1947

Aspen For Core Stock, Arlie W. Toole

Aspen Bibliography

During recent years, aspen has been used in the Lake States region for a number of products. The war years in particular showed a marked increase in the use of aspen for pulpwood, box lumber, and many other wood products. The annual cut of aspen lumber in the region increased from approximately 67 million board feet in 1941 to 152 million board feet in 1946. In spite of this increased use, aspen still remains the only major tree species in the Lake States in which annual growth exceeds annual drain. It represents the major forest resource in this region that …

The Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Fishes Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter Sep 1947

The Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Fishes Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

189 species of digenetic trematodes are reported from teleost fishes of the region of Tortugas, Florida. Among these are recognized: 44 new species, 9 new genera, 44 new combinations, 14 new synonyms, and 51 new host records. Several genera and species are considered synonyms of those previously named.

Of 237 species (approximately 2,039 specimens) of teleost fishes examined, 182 species or 76.8% were parasitized by adult, digenetic trematodes. Most of the host species harbored from one to three species of trematodes; 79 (or 43.4% of the 182) had a single species of trematode. Two fishes, however, were each susceptible to …

Observations On Some Helminths Parasitic In Ohio Turtles, Robert L. Rausch Sep 1947

Observations On Some Helminths Parasitic In Ohio Turtles, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The examination of a number of turtles, collected in Ohio, has disclosed at least thirty-three species of parasitic helminths. Little information is available on the parasites of turtles in the Central States, and it is the purpose of this paper to present data resulting from examinations made on 128 turtles, of seven species.

A Study Of The Pattern Of Scale Development In Salmo Clarkii Spilurus Cope, Josephine Hawrylko

Biology ETDs

One of the phases of fish investigation is to determine the pattern of scale development is fishes. The problem deals with a study of the gross development of scales and their distribution over the body in Salmo clarkii spilurus Cope, Rio Grande Cut-throat trout. "This trout is known only from the upper Rio Grande basin and southward into the mountains of Chihuahua." The Cut-throat trout is a member of the Family Salmonidae and often goes under such common names as black spotted trout, mountain trout, New Mexico native trout, red-throat trout and various other titles.

Dropping Pits, J. Ervin Boyd Aug 1947

Dropping Pits, J. Ervin Boyd

SDSU Extension Circulars

Dropping pits or "roosting racks" have become popular with the poultry raisers wherever they have been used. Many folks have replaced their roosts with dropping pits. People with old barns, hog houses or other buildings that have -been remodeled into a poultry laying house have asked for information on constructing dropping pits. Folks who have used the pit type roost cite the following advantages: Labor saving, aids sanitation, keeps the eggs cleaner, helps to keep the litter dry, provides a good place for hens to rest, and may save some eggs.

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson Jul 1947

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Work on root systems of forage plants has indicated that a knowledge of root relationships is fully as important in determining the actual conditions of ranges or pastures as is knowledge of the effects of grazing upon aboveground portions of plants. This is especially true in arid or semiarid regions since plants of these areas are frequently subjected to long periods of drought, high temperatures, and high wind velocities. Some xeric plants have a thickened cuticular layer, stomates that open only at night, and other mechanisms that prevent loss of water that is absorbed by the roots. However, in plants …
