Mima Mounds: A Reply, Victor B. Scheffer Jan 1948

Mima Mounds: A Reply, Victor B. Scheffer

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Major Grant believes that gophers behave in one way, and we believe that they behave in another-or we admit that we do not know exactly how they behave. I have plainly stated (1947, PP. 293, 294) that our evidence is indirect; that we have not seen gophers building a giant mound; that we do not know whether mound building is a contemporary or a historic process; and that we do not know whether the stimulus for mound building is a hardpan or a high water table or both.

Our main contentions are that mounds of the Mima type occur only …

Changes In Vegetation And Production Of Forage Resulting From Grazing Lowland Prairie, J. E. Weaver, R. W. Darland Jan 1948

Changes In Vegetation And Production Of Forage Resulting From Grazing Lowland Prairie, J. E. Weaver, R. W. Darland

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

When the early settlers came to Iowa, Nebraska, and adjacent territory they entered an almost boundless sea of grass. Throughout the years the prairie has been largely broken for crop production, but even today there still remain considerable tracts of native grassland annually mowed for hay and far greater ones of native pasture (Weaver and Fitzpatrick, '34). Climax grassland when grazed lightly or moderately may retain essentially its natural composition over extremely long periods. It is only when grazing animals are circumscribed in their range by fences and when too large a population is thus confined for too long a …

The Apparent Digestibility Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Arnold Bernard Nelson Jan 1948

The Apparent Digestibility Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Arnold Bernard Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

More land in the United States is used for grazing and hay production than for all other farm crops grown. Well-managed pastures and rangeland have always been recognized as an economical source of feed and recently have commanded much attention as an effective means of conserving soil resources and preventing erosion. In the states if North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, about 67 per cent of the total land in farms and ranches is in pasture and hay. Over 60 per cent of the entire area of South Dakota and about 83 per cent of the area …

Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce Jan 1948

Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A great amount of variation in the carcasses from butcher hogs proximal to two hundred and twenty pounds from different lines and breeds has become apparent in recent years. The average hog producer prefers the type of hog that gains quickly and economically and will net the most profit. The average consumer, however, prefers the type of carcass that has a high percentage of lean to fat. Today the dollar value of market hogs is determined more by the amount of finish they are carrying than by the quality of carcass. Since variations do exist in the carcasses from different …

Life Histories Of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers And Their Allies: Order Passeriformes, Arthur Cleveland Bent Jan 1948

Life Histories Of North American Nuthatches, Wrens, Thrashers And Their Allies: Order Passeriformes, Arthur Cleveland Bent

Papers in Ornithology

An attempt has been made to give as full a life history as possible of the best-known subspecies of each species and to avoid duplication by writing briefly of the others and giving only the characters of the subspecies, its range, and any -habits peculiar to it. In many cases certain habits, probably common to the species as a whole, have been recorded for only one subspecies. Such habits are mentioned under the subspecies on which the observations were made. The distribution gives the range of the species as a whole, with only rough outlines of the ranges of the …

A Study Of The Littoral Marine Isopod Crustacea Of The Dillon Beach Area, Robert James Menzies Jan 1948

A Study Of The Littoral Marine Isopod Crustacea Of The Dillon Beach Area, Robert James Menzies

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to provide accurate diagnoses of the littoral marine isopod crustacea in the Dillon Beach area. Such a purpose involved a much more complete study of the anatomy of the species represented in the fauna than was heretofore performed. Certain anatomical structures deemed by earlier writers as specifically diagnostic are demonstrated to be unreliable and in a great many instances other structures previously neither described or figured by American writers are considered of paramount importance in species identification. The number and magnitude of the changes proposed in this paper as illustrated in outline form …

Trypsin Inhibitor. V. Nutritive Value Of Treated Soybean Oil Meal And Some Characteristics Of The Trypsin Inhibitor In Soybeans, Raymond Borchers, W. E. Ham, R. M. Sandstedt, C. W. Ackerson, R. H. Thayer, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The marked improvement in the apparent nutritive value of soybean protein after heating has long been recognized. The fundamental cause of this improvement has never been fully understood. Furthermore, commercial soybean oil meal varies considerably in nutritive value although heat treatment is common in most processing plants. Since heating is generally regarded as deleterious to the nutritive quality of protein, the following investigations of various treatments of soybean oil meal are of particular importance in developing a soybean or soybean oil meal of maximum and uniform nutritive value.

Chemical Utilization Of Aspen, Geo J. Ritter, Ralph L. Hossfeld Dec 1947

Chemical Utilization Of Aspen, Geo J. Ritter, Ralph L. Hossfeld

Aspen Bibliography

Chemical utilization of raw materials depends largely on the chemical composition and the chemical and physical properties of the raw materials under consideration. The utilization of wood is no exception to this principle. Thus, a wood having a low percentage of cellulose is uneconomical as a source of wood sugar or pulp for paper; and one of an excessively knotty character is undesirable for chemical conversion Woods having several undesirable characteristics generally fall within the classification of species little used for the purpose. Fortunate! aspen falls outside this class.

Aspen Lumber For Building Purposes, Louis W. Rees Dec 1947

Aspen Lumber For Building Purposes, Louis W. Rees

Aspen Bibliography

Recent shortages of lumber for building purposes make it desirable to seek out all possible supplies of additional lumber. Aspen, according to a study made in northern Minnesota during 1944, 1/ may be a source of lumber largely untapped. The results of that study are the main basis of this paper.

A Preliminary Study Of A Physical Basis Of Bird Navigation, Henry L. Yeagley Dec 1947

A Preliminary Study Of A Physical Basis Of Bird Navigation, Henry L. Yeagley

Papers in Ornithology

The bird navigation theory as presented implies an organ or organs in the bird's physiology which are sensitive to the effect of its motion through the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field and to the effort exerted to overcome the coriolis force, due to the earth's rotation. Both these influences involve a set of lines which together form a navigational gridwork. By correlating its instantaneous land speed with the two above effects, a bird can fly to its home which is a unique point in this gridwork, or to related companion points existing in the gridwork at positions other …

Seasoning Of Aspen, Harvey H. Smith Nov 1947

Seasoning Of Aspen, Harvey H. Smith

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen is nor; the major forest type in the Lake States, and extensive stands are reaching maturity. Increasing quantities are being cut, and much is nor; being put to new and more exacting uses that require better air - seasoning and kiln-drying practices. The recent favorable market for green aspen lumber appears to be falling off, and the time may soon come when operators are no longer able to move green aspen. Such a change can be met by manufacturing better-quality aspen lumber and by carefully seasoning it to the desired moisture content to make it more acceptable. This report …

Machining And Related Properties Of Aspen, Edward M. Davis Nov 1947

Machining And Related Properties Of Aspen, Edward M. Davis

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen occupies 20 million acres of Lake States timber land, or 39 percent of the total forest area. In 1945 there were 6 1/3 billion feet of aspen saw timber 9 inches d.b.h. and larger, and a larger cubic volume of smaller material. The cut of aspen lumber was 152 million board feet in 1946, and the forest could sustain a much larger annual cut.
