On Some Grasses, Chiefly Of The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, V. L. Cory Apr 1949

On Some Grasses, Chiefly Of The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

In 1885 the condition of my father's health obliged our family to move to a drier climate and a higher altitude. In so doing, we followed the pioneers closely enough to witness the transformation of a prairie country into a Great Plains empire devoted to the growth of a grass called wheat. Among my earliest remembrances is that of a sea of other tall grasses, principally the little blue stem.

Note On The "Leopoldina," Or "The Imperial German Academy Of Naturalists At Halle", S. W. Geiser Apr 1949

Note On The "Leopoldina," Or "The Imperial German Academy Of Naturalists At Halle", S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Recently, a professor of entomology sent an urgent letter of inquiry relative to the association of German naturalists called, in the older writings, the "Leopoldina," or, more fully, the "Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum." He had read an account of Jacob Boll, early Texan naturalist, and therein had noted his election (March 1, 1873) to membership in the society. The article stated that, in 1873, the Academy had its seat at Dresden, where its Praeses, Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach had been for many years professor of natural history, and director of the natural history museum. It also stated, mistakenly, that …

Taxonomic Status Of Bulimulus (Mollusca, Gastropoda) In Texas, Clarence Hall, Leslie Pittman Apr 1949

Taxonomic Status Of Bulimulus (Mollusca, Gastropoda) In Texas, Clarence Hall, Leslie Pittman

Field and Laboratory

Careful study of an extended series of the Prairie Snail, Bulimulus, in the Southe1rn Methodist University Collection, reveals so much intergradation between some of the sub specific forms that identification is nearly impossible. We have presented below some of our observations, and the conclusions derived from our study. We hope that they will aid in clarification of the taxonomic position of several questionable subspecies of Bulimulus.

A New Texan Form Of Castilleja Indivisa Engelm., V. L. Cory

On March 28, 1948, while traveling from Sinton to Refugio, I encountered a profusion of the Castilleja which, in its area of distribution, is characterized by large brightred bracts. At a mile northeast of Sinton, in San Patricio County, our collection, No. 54157, was made.

Early Plant Collections Return To Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners Apr 1949

Early Plant Collections Return To Texas, Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

A herbarium is the means by which the plant life of a large area is sampled and made conveniently accessible for study. Texas, with the largest area and one of the most varied floras of the United States, is botanically one of the most poorly known. Although its botanical exploration has been going on for more than a hundred and twenty-five years (it began in the summer of 1820, when Edwin James, surgeon of Major Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains, collected a few plants along the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle), the early collections were sent elsewhere, and …

Effect Of Grass On Intake Of Water, F. L. Duley, C. E. Domingo Apr 1949

Effect Of Grass On Intake Of Water, F. L. Duley, C. E. Domingo

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A large proportion of the land area of the United States is in grass. With the increasing interest in soil and moisture conservation and flood control, the intake of water from rainfall continues to be an important question in connection with grassland management. As has been shown by numerous investigations, many factors affect the rate of intake of water by soils. Among these are the type of soil, character of the rainfall, and the condition of the surface. In this paper are presented the results of infiltration tests made on different types of grassland. The tests were carried out in …
