Bulletin No. 338 - Nutrient Deficiencies In Utah Orchards, D. W. Thorne, F. B. Wann

UAES Bulletins

When farm products are sold, some of the essential part of the soil are also marketed. If this process is continued, the soil may be eventually impoverished to the point where it cannot support high crop yields. In addition to direct soil depletion, unbalanced soil management practices may produce soil conditions that prevent or limit the uptake of certain elements by plants even though there may be enough total supply of the elements present to last hundreds or even thousands of years.

Both processes have been going on in many Utah orchards. Sale of fruit has gradually depleted the soil. …

Effects Of Different Intensities Of Grazing On Depth And Quantity Of Roots Of Grasses, J. E. Weaver Apr 1950

Effects Of Different Intensities Of Grazing On Depth And Quantity Of Roots Of Grasses, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The writer has been interested in prairies, pastures, and root depth and distribution over a period of many years. He had the privilege of examining these relationships in the Palouse prairie of Washington long ago while numerous representative areas still remained in a virgin condition (5, 6). Extensive studies have been made in the hardlands of Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska many years before, during, and following the great drought of 1933-40 (7, 8, 1, 11). Vegetation and root habits have been studied in sand hills (7, 8, 4), in bluffs of wind-blown loess (12), and wet soils of lowland. The …

Observations On Histopathological Changes Associated With Starvation In Wisconsin Deer, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1950

Observations On Histopathological Changes Associated With Starvation In Wisconsin Deer, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Heavy winter losses in deer, apparently resulting directly from an inadequate food supply, have long been known in the United States. The general situation has been well reviewed by Leopold (1943) and by Leopold, Sowls, and Spencer (1947). There is a conservable volume of literature available concerning deer starvation from the management standpoint. The ill-advised attempts at the total destruction or, at best, the severe reduction of natural predator on deer have resulted in the removal of this important population control.

Rodent Populations And Activities On A Moderately Grazed Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, John L. Paulk Mar 1950

Rodent Populations And Activities On A Moderately Grazed Mixed Prairie Near Hays, Kansas, John L. Paulk

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this investigation was to study rodent populations on a moderately grazed mixed prairie. A working knowledge of the activities of these small mammals, has satisfied to a certain degree the curiosity of the writer. So little work has been done in this plains region that the author felt the need for such an investigation, and hoped to arouse the interest of others along similar lines.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla Mar 1950

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

Monolith Method Of Root-Sampling In Studies On Succession And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, John Voigt Mar 1950

Monolith Method Of Root-Sampling In Studies On Succession And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, John Voigt

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A new method has been devised by which a complete sample of an entire root system may be taken from soil surface to maximum depth of penetration. The roots are separated from the soil without injury to them or displacement of individual roots from their natural position. They are examined in the laboratory in relation to the various horizons of the soil profile. Monoliths 12 inches wide, 3 inches thick, and 3-5 feet in depth are taken from the walls of trenches made in selected pure stands of each species. Roots are obtained from the monolith by a system of …

A Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Digestive Systems Of The Desert Jack Rabbit And The Pika, Dale Stanley Rupert Feb 1950

A Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Digestive Systems Of The Desert Jack Rabbit And The Pika, Dale Stanley Rupert

Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to make gross and histological comparisons of the various segments of the intestinal tracts of the jack rabbit and the pika. The two animals used for this study were the desert jack rabbit (Lepus Californicus deserticola Mearns), and the pika (Ochotona princepts uinta Hollister). The jack rabbits were found only in the desert valleys and low foothills in the areas studied. These areas are typically open bush or sage brush types of communities. The pikas were restricted to certain high rockslides in this region. These areas are described more completely in the section …

Bulletin No. 342 - The Nutritive Content Of The Grazing Sheep's Diet On Summer And Winter Ranges Of Utah, C. Wayne Cook, Lorin E. Harris Jan 1950

Bulletin No. 342 - The Nutritive Content Of The Grazing Sheep's Diet On Summer And Winter Ranges Of Utah, C. Wayne Cook, Lorin E. Harris

UAES Bulletins

Approximately two million sheep graze the native ranges of Utah each year. These animals are on the range most of the year and their food supply must come from range plants as they are normally selected. The nutritive value of range forage is often borderline or deficient in essential nutrients, yet, sufficiently adequate to prevent obvious physiological disorders. These mild deficiencies may affect the productive efficiency of the animal even though no symptoms are apparent.
