4-H Project Guide : Swine Production, Clifford Iverson, James O'Connell Jun 1950

4-H Project Guide : Swine Production, Clifford Iverson, James O'Connell

SDSU Extension Circulars

Choosing a Breed: The question "Which breed shall I raise" confronts every purebred hog producer. He may have a personal preference which will assist him in choosing a breed. If he has no such preference, it would be well worth while to consider the most popular breed in the community. This procedure will help the breeder to gain popularity, in establishing a reputation, and in attracting more buyers into the community. Each breeder may believe he has the best breed because of size, feeding qualities, higher dressing percentage or some other factor; but there is more difference within breeds than …

Bulletin No. 339 - Consumer Demand For Peaches Of Varying Stages Of Maturity

UAES Bulletins

Studies of consumer demand for peaches of varying maturities were conducted in Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee during the 1949 peach marketing season. In these tests standard Elberta peaches from Colorado and Utah were used primarily but occasionally when they were not available Elbertas from Idaho and Michigan were used. No Early Elbertas were used.

This study is designed to promote the orderly marketing of peaches and to expand their consumption, that returns to growers may be maintained or increased. The study is primarily concerned with consumer demand for degree of maturity of Colorado and Utah Elberta peaches. …

Bear River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Vanez T. Wilson, Rachel Carson Jun 1950

Bear River: A National Wildlife Refuge, Vanez T. Wilson, Rachel Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

In the autumn of 1824 a buffalo-hide canoe drifted down the Bear River to its mouth in the Great Salt Lake of Utah. Within sight of that vast inland sea, Jim Bridger must have paused in amazement. Everywhere he looked-in the sky, on the open water, over the marshy borders of the lake-there were birds. It is said that the famous explorer of the western wilderness brought back reports that he had that day seen "millions of ducks and geese."

The Bear River marshes were soon to know years when their waterfowl were numbered, not by millions, but by thousands; …

A Study Of Stimulated Respiration In The Adrenal Gland, Owen Foster Kline Jr.

Biology ETDs

The purpose of this paper is to present certain preliminary observations on what is believed to be completely new special metabolism in the adrenal gland of Hereford cattle. Although no direct correlation between any of the substances isolable from the adrenal gland and the respiratory system to be described in this paper has been obtained, it is nevertheless necessary to present a review of the chemical and medical data available pertaining to these glands.

A New Species Of The Acanthocephalan Genus Arhythmorhynchus From Sandpipers Of Alaska, Harley J. Van Cleave, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In the spring of 1949, a survey of the parasites of birds of Alaska, especially in the vicinity of Juneau, was conducted by Robert L. Rausch and Ralph B. Williams. Among the Acanthocephala encountered there were specimens of the genus Arhythmorhynchus in two species of sandpipers, Erolia ptilocnemis couesi (Ridgway) (the Aleutian sandpiper) and Erolia alpina pacifica (Vieillot) (the red-backed sandpiper). This parasite was present in such numbers as to make morphological and taxonomic study profitable. The species is clearly distinct from all other members of the genus and is here described as Arhythmorhynchus comptus n. sp.

Ecological Changes In An Overgrazed Grassland Area Resulting From Eleven Years Of Protection Against Livestock Usage, Larry L. Gordon

Biology ETDs

The present paper, like many others already published, contributes to our knowledge of the effect of long time overgrazing and the recovery of lands temporarily retired from utilization. In the present study, an attempt is made to determine the effects of an eleven year recovery of grazing lands following misuse for nearly two centuries. The topics given detailed attention include the flora with particular reference to the grasses and forbs, the fauna with special emphasis on the rodents, and the climatic and edaphic factors.

The area in which the study was conducted is on the east side of the Rio …

Some Observations On The Embryology And The Weberian Apparatus Of Catostomus Ardens (Jordan And Gilbert), H. Ronald Frogley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to add to our knowledge of the embryology and osteology of the Weberian apparatus as found in the sucker, Catostamus ardens J. & G. ot Utah Lake. Observations were made on the embryological development for twenty one days. This information has been discussed and pictures showing the development included. The literature on the osteology ot the Weberian apparatus was reviewed and it is believed that this study presents the first descriptions of the bones of this species. The ossicles were found to be comparatively stable within species indicating some taxonomic value. More study is …

Some Factors Which May Influence Survival Of Game Farm-Reared Pheasants After Release Into The Wild, Taylor F. Cottle May 1950

Some Factors Which May Influence Survival Of Game Farm-Reared Pheasants After Release Into The Wild, Taylor F. Cottle

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine some of the factors which may influence the survival of Utah game farm-reared pheasants following their release into the wild. The survival of these birds is below the desired level after they are released, as is indicated by the low percentage taken by the sportsmen during the hunting season. In recent years the return from released game farm-reared pheasants is about 7 to 8 percent.1 Consequently, if survival rate of these birds could be increased, more birds would be available to supplement the wild stock. Also, an increase in the …

Microradiography With Biological Specimens, Arthur D. Wellman May 1950

Microradiography With Biological Specimens, Arthur D. Wellman

Bachelors’ Theses

Microradiography is a technique in which X-rays are directed through a very thin specimen onto a fine-grained photographic film and the image examined under magnification. It has been used chiefly as a supplementary tool in industrial analysis of metal structures, and even in this field has attained prominence only within the past decade. Its usefulness is limited to fine structures (except where minute flaws or impurities are to be examined in a material), and its success is limited by the degree of clarity in the radiograph to be magnified.

A Survey Of Plant Parasitic And Associated Species Of Nematodes In The Carrot Producing Area Of Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah, Paul R. Fitzgerald May 1950

A Survey Of Plant Parasitic And Associated Species Of Nematodes In The Carrot Producing Area Of Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah, Paul R. Fitzgerald

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plant parasitic nematodes have long been known to cause extensive crop losses through reduced yields, shortened productive life, or lowered value of produce. The rood knot nematode, Heterodera marioni, is cosmopolitan. It destroys crops and causes economic losses equal to those of any other plant parasitic species. in 1948 this nematode caused an estimated loss to the carrot raising industry in Iron County, Utah of approximately $15,000. No estimates for the years prior to 1948 are available; however, reports of the county agent (14) for Iron County show that carrot production in the Cedar Valley is decreasing, and is …

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Adrenal Gland Of Native Rabbits, Ernest I. Gonzalez May 1950

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Adrenal Gland Of Native Rabbits, Ernest I. Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

A review of the literature shows that extensive work has been done on the morphology and histology of the adrenal gland of the domesticated rabbit, but it appears that little or no work has been done on other members of the order Lagomorpha. Approximately one hundred specimens of rabbits of various ages and sizes, and of both sexes, were collected over a period of nine months. All adrenal glands were fixed by immersion and were embedded in paraffin. The majority or the glands were sectioned at eight or twelve miora, and were stained with Mallory's triple stain. This investigation shows …

The study of the cutthroat trout in the Logan River drainage was initiated in cooperation with the Utah Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit and the Utah Fish and Game Department during May of 1948. The first field work began that month. The taking of fish was terminated in November, 1949, although several trips were made into the study area as late as January, 1950.

The Food Of Three Centrarchids And An Ameiurid In Northern Utah During 1949-50, Robert L. Eberhardt May 1950

The Food Of Three Centrarchids And An Ameiurid In Northern Utah During 1949-50, Robert L. Eberhardt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This is a study of the food of pond fish in northern Utah. The species examined in the family Centrarchidae were largemouth black bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede), green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus Rafinesque, and common bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, together with black bullhead, Ameiurus melas (Rafinesque) of the family Ameriuridae. Specifically it is a report of the macroscopic food found in the stomachs of sub-adult and mature fish. Although such a study is of predominant interest to the biologist, who is interested in life history and ecological relationships of fish, the farmer or small businessman can find the data applicable. This …

An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall May 1950

An Etiological And Host Range Study Of Celery Mosaic In Utah, Dennis H. Hall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Celery mosaic is a virus disease of major economic importance in Utah. In years of severe epiphytotics, it has been a limiting factor in celery production. In 1947 losses due to this disease were estimated to exceed 8 per cent of the total crop. This estimate does not include losses resulting from reduction in grade or from plants discarded in the packing sheds. The celery acreage in Utah dropped from a high of 950 acres in 1946 to 750 acres in 1947 and dropped again in 1948 to 420 acres. Leaders in the industry attributed this reduction in acreage, in …

Study Of Producer Marketing Of Fruits And Vegetables On The Growers' Market In Salt Lake City, Utah, John D. Baker Jr. May 1950

Study Of Producer Marketing Of Fruits And Vegetables On The Growers' Market In Salt Lake City, Utah, John D. Baker Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Growers' Market Company in Salt Lake City was established in its present form in 1919. It developed out of the need of growers and produce dealers and has served an important function in providing a market place where buyers and sellers of fruits and vegetables can be brought together in an orderly fashion to transact business.

During the four months period of this study it was estimated that over 10,000 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables valued at about $960,000 were sold over the market platforms. This represents over 25 per cent of the requirements of fruits and vegetables …
