The Influence Of Crop Plants On Those Which Follow V, Theodore Eugene Odland, Robert Smith Bell, John B. Smith Aug 1950

The Influence Of Crop Plants On Those Which Follow V, Theodore Eugene Odland, Robert Smith Bell, John B. Smith

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)

This is a study of the effect which crop plants have on the growth and yields of those crops which follow. The study began in 1907; this bulletin reports the results from 1930 to 1942. Millet, mangels and rutabagas generally seem to be harmful to crops which follow them. Carrots, mangels and millet were least favorable of all crops to mangels. Potatoes did poorest when following potatoes, rutabagas, or millet. Rutabagas yielded low following rutabagas, mangels and millet. Onions were unfavorably affect by preceding crops of mangels, cabbage, or rutabagas. There is no simple explanation for the effect of crops …

A Preliminary Note On Trichinosis Investigations In Alaska, P. J. Brandly, Robert L. Rausch Aug 1950

A Preliminary Note On Trichinosis Investigations In Alaska, P. J. Brandly, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Trichinosis in the arctic regions of the world has received considerable attention during recent years, particularly since the work of Roth (1948) in Greenland. In Connell's (1949) review of arctic trichinosis some Alaskan and Canadian records were included but, until now, little has been known of the status of the disease in Alaska. Information available at the present time indicates that the incidence of trichinosis is high in circumpolar carnivores and that marine mammals have a definite place in its epizootiology. Present knowledge cannot explain the survival of trichinosis in marine mammal populations, but it is evident that they may …

Studies On The Reactivating Sclerotium Of Physarella Oblong Morgan With Special Reference To The Nucleus, William Thomas Allman Jul 1950

Studies On The Reactivating Sclerotium Of Physarella Oblong Morgan With Special Reference To The Nucleus, William Thomas Allman

Master's Theses

The Myxomycetes, because of their naked, mobile mass of protoplasm have served biologists and chemists as material for the study of the characteristics of protoplasm. The typical life his tory of such an organism may be summarized as follows: The vegetative phase in the life history consists of a naked mass of protoplasm, to which Oienkowski (9) applied the name "plasmodium". This plasmodium creeps by reversible streaming over and throughout the substratum, deriving its food from various constituents of decaying vegetable matter which serve as its normal substrate. Upon reaching a state of maturity and under certain environmental conditions, the …

Distribution Of Mayfly Nymphs (Ephemeroptera) In Streams Of Dallas County, Texas, Louis E. Moore Jr. Jun 1950

Distribution Of Mayfly Nymphs (Ephemeroptera) In Streams Of Dallas County, Texas, Louis E. Moore Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Although mayflies are of common occurrence in the Southwest, but little work has been done here on them. Most investigations on this group of insects have been done in New York, the Great Lakes Region, and Canada. Some work has been done in the Rocky Mountain area, and also along the Atlantic coast. Berner (1950) has published an extensive work on the mayflies of Florida. This is the first major work in this field since the book, Biology of Mayflies, by Needham, Traver, & Hsu (1935). Besides these, many minor papers on this group have appeared; but for Texas only …

The North Texas Species Of Plantago (Plantaginaceae), Lloyd H. Shinners Jun 1950

The North Texas Species Of Plantago (Plantaginaceae), Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

The Plantaginaceae of Texas have been partly or wholly revised by five authors successively: Decaisne in 1852, Gray in 1878, Morris in 1900, 1901, and 1903, Poe in 1928, and Pilger in 1937. None of these revisions is very satisfactory, partly because of reliance on quite unreliable characteristics such as color of plant after drying or number of seeds, partly because of lack of knowledge of distribution patterns of Texas plants, and partly because of limited collections or because different collections were distributed under the same number. In the following synopsis, though written only for the counties of north central …

Mexican Species Of Desmanthus (Leguminosae), B. L. Turner

Field and Laboratory

Of the world's recognized species of Desmanthus, nearly half are found in Mexico. Sixteen species and three varieties are recognized in the present paper. Ten are restricted to Mexico, seven extend a relatively short distance from or inside its border, and two are weedy species widely distributed in tropical areas of North, South, and Central America.
