The Life Cycle Of The Ostracod Cypricercus Reticulatus (Zaddach, 1844) Sars, 1928, Louise E. Goeke
Biology ETDs
The purpose of the present study is to describe the stages in the life-cycle of the fresh-water ostracod, Cypricercus reticulatus (Zaddach,1844) Sars, 1928 of the family Cypridae. This particular species was chosen primarily because of availability. The selection of this species was fortunate since C. reticulatus was found to be easily adapted to laboratory conditions. In addition, the form was a fortunate selection because the period of time required for reproduction is relatively brief and the species reproduces parthenogenetically, thus eliminating difficulties incident to impregnation of the females.

Stratigraphy Of The Woodbine And Eagle Ford, Waco Area, Texas, W. S. Adkins, Frank E. Lozo
Fondren Science Series
In the last twenty years, very little detailed stratigraphy of this area has been published. Meanwhile there have been significant advances in this field: the aims of modern stratigraphic research have been somewhat clarified; much new information pertinent to the stratigraphy of this area has been accumulated from the study of other areas; and a considerable amount of detailed information on the surface and subsurface geology of this area has come to light as a result of detailed outcrop work, extensive drilling of oil tests and water wells, and new techniques of bore-hole logging. The scope of this work is …

The Grand Prairies Of Texas, Frank Bryan
Fondren Science Series
Welcome to the Grand Prairies of Central Texas. They were first so called by that grand old man of early Texas geology, Dr. Robert T. Hill. These prairies offer no spectacular, breath-taking landmarks to the viewing eye. They offer only a broad vista of rolling prairie hills. Yet this can be a thrilling vista, once you know the details of its history back into remote antiquity.
History Of Discovery And Development Of Woodbine Oil Fields In East Texas, C. I. Alexander
History Of Discovery And Development Of Woodbine Oil Fields In East Texas, C. I. Alexander
Fondren Science Series
The purpose of this paper is to present a brief historical summary of the discovery and development of the Woodbine oil fields of East Texas. A simple listing, or tabulation of the Woodbine oil fields, with discovery dates, would be dry reading, indeed, so I will try to review the history of this important oil producing formation and area as a story - a story of lines or trends of geological thought, of lease plays and exploratory operations resulting from these lines or trends of thought; and of the changes in geological thought resulting from some of the more important …

Comparative Status Of The Woodbine In Oil Production, G. J. Loetterle
Fondren Science Series
While the relative importance of the Woodbine as an oil producing formation is well known in a general way, the purpose of this study is to bring that importance into more specific focus. It is hoped thereby to emphasize even more clearly the economic significance of the present field excursion, and to highlight the tremendous role of Woodbine production as a natural resource.
Woodbine Sandstone Dikes Of Northern Mclennan County, Texas, John Napier Monroe
Woodbine Sandstone Dikes Of Northern Mclennan County, Texas, John Napier Monroe
Fondren Science Series
A review of the literature indicates that clastic dikes, generally considered curiosities, are common features of many marine shales and marls. Excepting the Eagle Ford shale, dikes have been found by the writer in all of the Upper Cretaceous groups of northeastern Texas. Studies of twenty-one Woodbine dikes in McLennan County indicate that most of these were formed by the deposition of marine sediment in tension cracks opened along the sea floor during the time that an upper sand member of the Pepper formation was deposited. This hypothesis is based on the presence in the dikes of bedding, as indicated …

The South Bosque Field, Mclennan County, Texas, J. C. Price
Fondren Science Series
The South Bosque Field is located in McLennan County, Texas about eight miles southwest of the city of Waco. At one time, the field covered an area approximately one-half mile wide and three miles long, extending from the vicinity of the town of South Bosque to Hog Creek. There are very few good records of the wells available at this time, so, unfortunately, much of the information relative to this field is conflicting and unreliable.
Stratigraphic Notes On The Maness (Comanche Cretaceous) Shale, Frank E. Lozo
Stratigraphic Notes On The Maness (Comanche Cretaceous) Shale, Frank E. Lozo
Fondren Science Series
In 1941, the writer was advised of the opinions of T. L. Bailey, F. G. Evans, W. S. Adkins, and other geologists of the Shell Oil Company on the stratigraphic position of the uppermost Comanche shale unit recognized in the subsurface of eastern Texas. Their studies pointed to the conclusion that this unit, now known as the Maness shale, is (1) stratigraphically younger than the subsurface Del Rio (or Grayson) shale with which it usually had been correlated, and (2) conformably overlies the Buda limestone, at this date generally misidentified as the Georgetown limestone. An investigation of the controversial sequence …

In 1948 a comprehensive fishery investigation on Logan River was initiated by the Department of Wildlife Management, Utah State Agricultural College, and the Utah Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. Three masters' theses have been completed on life histories and populations to date (Thoreson, 1949; Fleener, 1950; Pechacek, 1950). One phase of this investigation is a study of the mountain whitefish Prosopium williamsoni (Girard).

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of The Subspecies Of The Iguanid Lizard Uta Stansburiana In The Eastern Great Basin 1950-1951, Dale D. Parker
Theses and Dissertations
This study is concerned with a critical analysis of species and subspecies of Uta stansburiana as it occurs in the Eastern Great Basin. In this study Urosaurus ornatus wrighti is also briefly discussed since it was until recently considered a member of the genus Uta and since it extends in the area which has been dealt with in this thesis. This problem necessitated study of large series of lizards in order to work out subspeciation. The material from the Brigham Young University collection and the specimens collected by the author total 520. After recording dorsal scale counts, prefrontal scales, keelation …
The Effects Of Intraperitoneal Injections Of Methylene Blue On Sarcoma 37 In Mice, Jennifer Sullivan
The Effects Of Intraperitoneal Injections Of Methylene Blue On Sarcoma 37 In Mice, Jennifer Sullivan
Student Scholarship
This research investigates the quantitative effects of methylene blue on the growth of transplanted sarcoma 37 in Swiss mice. While some previous literature suggested that oral administration of this thiazine dye could inhibit certain carcinomas, this study focuses on the results of direct intraperitoneal injections. The experimental process involved injecting mice with varying concentrations of the dye and allowing a nine-day growth period before removing the tumors for microscopic analysis. The primary metric for determining growth effects was the mitotic count, which involved averaging the number of dividing cells across multiple sections and fields for each tumor.
The results indicate …

The Locomotive Springs Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, located on the north shore of Great Salt Lake, Utah, is a state-owned area of about 12,000 acres. Six springs arise from the desert floor and flow south and south-east toward Great Salt Lake. The refuge encompasses these springs and their outflows. The area, while predominately vegetated by the Sarcobatus-Atriplex type, has 1,200 acres of open water and about 2,560 acres of marsh and stream-channel edges. The area was purchased by the State of Utah in 1934 with the express purpose of providing waterfowl hunting for the general public who could not afford to …

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller
The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Starter is the "heart" of the cheese making industry. Only by proper handling of starter can good quality cheese be made. The economic loss from contaminated starter may prove disastrous to a cheese plant if proper corrective measures are not taken.
Milk usually contains a variety of bacteria. Under plant conditions some of these bacteria get into the mother starter or bulk starter unless extreme caution is used. Comparatively little is known about how one organism influences another when grown in milk. This problem is important in the cheese industry.

In about half of the angiosperm species the gamete chromosome number is a multiple of that found in some related species. This and the fact that polyploidy has such a pronounced effect on plant physiology and growth, as pointed out by Noggle, serve only to emphasize the importance of understanding more about polyploid genetics.

Varietal Response In Alfalfa For Seed Production As Affected By Lygus Infestation And Related Factors, A. Glenn Wahlquist
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is one of the most valuable of our forage crops. A dependable source of seed is therefore a primary essential to the success of our present system of agriculture. More than 70 million pounds of alfalfa seed are required each year in the United States to maintain the present hay and pasture acreage of this crop; and the annual demand for seed would increase to more than 100 million pounds if the acreage were expanded to the extent recommended for soil conservation and a balanced agricultural security.

A Population Study Of The South Cache Elk Herd, Roger James Mccormack
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Elk, because of their wide ranging habit and frequently inaccessible habitat, are among our least known big game animals. As a result the management of elk herds has been handicapped by a lack of essential information. Population numbers remain unknown, ranges undefined, and decimating factors unevaluated to cite but three conditions which hamper efficient management on a long range basis.

An Ecological Study Of The Utah Sculpin Cottus Bairdi Semiscaber In Logan River, Utah, William Merle Zarbock
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of the Utah sculpin Cottus bairdi semiscaber, or Rocky Mountain bullhead as it is known locally on Logan River, Utah, is primarily one of determining its relation to game fish. Field work for this study began in 1949 and continued to March of 1951. Numbers of the Utah sculpin on Logan River have been estimated to be as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. The larger populations are in the area of the third impoundment on Logan River and downstream.
