The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays May 1954

The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays

Biology ETDs

It was the purpose of this investigation to develop [a synthetic] medium for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae 1, strain 14-1, originally obtained from the collection at the Army Medical Service Graduate School. Not only was it desirable to grow the cells, but also to grow them in large quantities in the least possible time. Although considerable work has been done in determining the various growth essentials for many of the Shigella group, particularly the Flexner strains of Shigella paradysenteriae, comparatively little has be ascertained regarding those strains included in Shigella dysenteriae.

Protein Metabolism In Rats With Tumors Of The Liver, Chester R. Richmond

Biology ETDs

The purpose of our study was to determine possible alteration in water, fat, and protein content of the livers from rats fed DAB for long periods. Aliquots were used for the protein determinations.

Microscopic Alterations In Endocrine Glands And Other Organs Of Rats Fed The Hepatic Carcinogen P-Dimethylaminoazobenzene, Fenton C. Kelley

Biology ETDs

It was the purpose of this investigation to determine whether the feeding of DAB, in addition to inducing liver tumors, alters the microscopic structure of the endocrine system. In addition, a study was made of certain adrenal cortical hormones as possible modifiers of the carcinogenic effects of DAB.

For More Efficient Production Of Beef, Pork And Lamb

Department of Animal Science: Departmental News

Completion of the Meat Laboratory marks another long step forward in the University's program of service to the livestock industry. It is dedicated to more efficient production of beef, pork and lamb, through research and teaching.
May 14,1954
The Meat Laboratory is a three-story brick and concrete building in the northeast part of the Agricultural Campus. The building is L-s haped, 112 feet by 38 feet with a wing at the rear 60 feet long and 45 feet wide. It was designed as a low-maintenance building, meeting all modern sanitary requirements. It is in no sense a packinghouse but was …

Department of Animal Science: Departmental News

The Meat Laboratory was completed in 1953 and dedicated to the memory of Professor William J. Loeffel, longtime meat researcher and former department chairman of the Animal Science Department, University of Nebraska.

The Loeffel Meat Laboratory, a Federally Inspected facility, was designed for both undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and extension meat programs. Originally it was a three-story brick building in the northeast part of the Agricultural Campus. The building was L-shaped, 112 feet by 38 feet wide with a wing at the rear 60 feet long and 45 feet wide. It was designed as a low-maintenance building, meeting all …

Records And New Species Of Heterosphyronid Pseudoscorpions, Don L. Torgerson

Biology ETDs

Since the description of the family Chthoniidae by Hansen in 1894, the group has been revamped considerably. Most notable of these revisions are the works of Chamberlin (1931) and Beier (1932). At the present time the family contains twenty genera and several subgenera (unpublished data, C.C. Hoff). The distribution of the family Chthoniidae is cosmopolitan.

Bulletin No. 368 - Drainage Of The Cache Valley Lowlands, Willard Gardner, Orson W. Israelsen May 1954

Bulletin No. 368 - Drainage Of The Cache Valley Lowlands, Willard Gardner, Orson W. Israelsen

UAES Bulletins

Now, slightly more than a hundred years since irrigation was first started in the West, many of the low-lying valley lands produce only poor quality pasture grasses because of waterlogging, salinity, and alkali. Other lands now produce only light crops of wild hay, and still other land areas are almost wholly non-productive because of the concentration of excessive quantities of harmful salts. This waterlogging is largely a result of irrigation on the higher lands, although rain and snow waters aggravate the situation. The water not used by the highland crops seeps into the lower areas, bringing harmful salts to the …

Feeding The Dairy Herd For Profit, R. A. Cave, D. F. Breazeale, Chase Wilson, Ervin Kurtz, Emery Bartle

SDSU Extension Circulars

Dairy cows, in order to make milk in large quantities, must be supplied with liberal amounts of the raw material from which milk can be made. That means good feed. The average production of South Dakota milk cows for the year 1952 was 4170 pounds of milk and 156 pounds of butterfat. Much of this relativ~ly low production is due to poor feed and lack of enough feed. Production and feed records shown in Table IV - page 25 reveal that one way to get increased production is to give the cows more feed. Feed is the greatest single item …

The Chromatographic Purification Of Human Red Blood Cell Acetylcholinesterase, Richard P. Dunkley May 1954

The Chromatographic Purification Of Human Red Blood Cell Acetylcholinesterase, Richard P. Dunkley

Theses and Dissertations

A process of column chromatography of human erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase, using a cationic exchange resin, was investigated as a possible method for the primary partial purification of the enzyme on a large scale. The investigation was based, first; on a detailed study of the enzymatic stability to variation in hydrogen-ion and salt concentrations for periods of time extending to forty eight hours and, second; on an investigation of the degree of adsorption by the resin of the enzyme at various pH values within the pH range of enzyme stability. A method for the analysis of the enzyme activity of large numbers …

The Adaptation Of The Neutron Scattering Technique Of Soil Moisture Determination To Field Application, Robert L. Uhler May 1954

The Adaptation Of The Neutron Scattering Technique Of Soil Moisture Determination To Field Application, Robert L. Uhler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

At the present time there is a recognized need for a better means of measuring soil moisture in situ. Soil moisture measurements are required in fundamental studies of soil moisture flow and soil-plant-water relationships as well as in practical studies in irrigation practices. Various phases of engineering also utilize soil moisture data, for example, soil moisture determinations are made during the construction of earth dams, road cuts and fills, and under airfield runways. The desired method should be quick, reliable, and adaptable over the moisture range from oven dryness to saturation.

Research in nuclear physics has revealed the neutron …

Seasonal Yield And Nitrogen Content Of Three Grasses Grown Alone And In Association With Each Other And With White Dutch Clover, Donald B. Wilson May 1954

Seasonal Yield And Nitrogen Content Of Three Grasses Grown Alone And In Association With Each Other And With White Dutch Clover, Donald B. Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The chief aim of pasture research is to discover means of providing the largest possible amount of highly nutritious forage at the time the animal requires it. Throughout the grazing season animal herbage requirements are relatively constant, while herbage production from pastures usually is quite variable.

Muskrat And Waterfowl Production And Harvest On Dingle Swamp, Bear Lake County, Idaho, Henry M. Reeves May 1954

Muskrat And Waterfowl Production And Harvest On Dingle Swamp, Bear Lake County, Idaho, Henry M. Reeves

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dingle Swamp, a high altitude marsh, is located in the extreme southeastern corner of Idaho in Bear Lake Valley. The 16,000 acre marsh, one of the largest in the state, is separated from Bear Lake by only a narrow curved sandbar. Numerous islands, ponds, and channels diversify the characteristic bulrush vegetation of the marsh. The largest body of water, Mud Lake, is approximately 1 square mile in area. Several thousand muskrats and fair numbers of waterfowl, particularly Canada geese, are produced annually on the marsh.
