The Influence Of Pith Cells On The Papermaking Characteristics Of Pulp From Bagasse, Miguel A. Cabrera Jun 1954

The Influence Of Pith Cells On The Papermaking Characteristics Of Pulp From Bagasse, Miguel A. Cabrera

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Literature Survey

Introduction

The fact that the need for paper products is increasing in an unparallel manner with the wood resources available at the United States market, has open the field for research studies in the development of new raw materials.

Bagasse has been a waste product submitted to intense laboratory investigation due to the fact that is a world available and relatively cheap fiber. Its use as a papermaking material has been investigated over a 100 years. Its development has been attacked by the different and contradictory opinions obtained from pilot plant runs and lack of knowledge techniques in …

Fiber Length As A Variable Influencing Wet Strength, Charles Elliott Jun 1954

Fiber Length As A Variable Influencing Wet Strength, Charles Elliott

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

It was desired to discover the influence of fiber length on wet strength obtained by the addition of a resin. The wet strength tests chosen were the tear and tensile, the retention of the resin was also measured. The resin used was melamine formaldehyde acid colliod.

The wet tensile showed no significant drop with decreasing fiber length until the fibers were cut very short. The wet tear was shown to be very sensitive to any change in fiber length. The retention of the resin was relatively unaffected by the fiber length.

Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson Jun 1954

Feeding Poultry For Profit, Glen Hart, C. W. Carlson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Feeding poultry for profit involves essentially the use of top quality stock, proper management and care, proper facilities, and last, but certainly not least important, a good feed. The feed accounts for well over 50 per cent of the cost of poultry, meat and egg production, hence its importance cannot be considered lightly. A good feed supplies all of the essential nutrients in the required amounts for each type of production.

Agricultural Education Through News, Burton Seeker Jun 1954

Agricultural Education Through News, Burton Seeker

SDSU Extension Circulars

If a visitor came into your office and offered to influence a thousand people in your behalf, with no cost or obligation to you, would you take him up on it? Your job is education. Your problem is reaching the great number of people in your county with the wealth of information you have at hand. Of course you would jump at the chance. That man is your local newspaperman. Extension education is primarily a proposition of personal contacts through schools, meetings, field tours and farm visits. Yet not everyone is enrolled in your crop improvement association or home demonstration …

The Performance Of Sodium Hypochlorite And Sodium Hypobromite As Bleaching Agents At Varying Levels Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Ted Jewson Jun 1954

The Performance Of Sodium Hypochlorite And Sodium Hypobromite As Bleaching Agents At Varying Levels Of Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Ted Jewson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Limited information was found in literature survey on the bleaching of wood pulp by means of hypobromites. Experimentation showed that the addition of sodium bromide to sodium hypochlorite results in accelerated bleaching. The optimum pH range for bleaching was found to be higher in presence of hypbromites than in straight hypochlorite bleaching. The maximum brightness values obtained in bleaching with either straight sodium hypobromite or with mixtures of hypochlorite and hypobromites were lower than those obtained with sodium hypochlorite.

Possible Use Of Chlorine Dioxide For Bleaching Deinked Paper Stock, Donald E. Thorton Jun 1954

Possible Use Of Chlorine Dioxide For Bleaching Deinked Paper Stock, Donald E. Thorton

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The literature survey shows that chlorine dioxide can be used to bleach virgin pulp to a high brightness. The purpose of chlorine dioxide is to preserve the strength of the pulp.

The purpose of this thesis was to find out if chlorine dioxide could be used to preserve the strength of deinked paper stock.

Paper stock was found to lose strength when bleached with calcium hypochlorite and mixed with virgin pulp the loss of strength carried over in the mixture.

When the paper stock was bleached with chlorine dioxide, there was no loss of strength in the paper stock.

Supercalender Variables (Ii) The Effect Of Supercalender Pressure And Temperature On The Physical Properties Of Paper, Robert C. Walker Jun 1954

Supercalender Variables (Ii) The Effect Of Supercalender Pressure And Temperature On The Physical Properties Of Paper, Robert C. Walker

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This thesis is the second in a series of fundamental investigations of the variables of supercalendering. The variables studied in this thesis are roll temperature and nip pressure. These variables were investigated by testing three types of paper that were supercalendered at various controlled roll pressures and temperatures. Different values of these variables during supercalendering were found to cause noticeable differences in the physical properties of supercalendered paper. It was observed, after studying the physical tests made on each of the three types of paper, that the type of paper being supercalendered, influences, to a varying degree, the effect of …

50 Years Of Research At The North Platte Experiment Station, W. W. Burr, J. C. Adams

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The North Platte Experiment was established fifty years ago. So many changes have occurred since then that few people remember why research in dry land agriculture was started in Nebraska and other Great Plains states. In order to get a proper perspective, it may be well to consider some early history.

Locations Of Maximum Numbers Of The Wheat Curl Mite, Aceria Tulipae (K.) (Eriophyidae) On The Winter Wheat Plant During Spring Growth, Edmon J. Kantack, Herbert Knutson Jun 1954

Locations Of Maximum Numbers Of The Wheat Curl Mite, Aceria Tulipae (K.) (Eriophyidae) On The Winter Wheat Plant During Spring Growth, Edmon J. Kantack, Herbert Knutson

Field and Laboratory

Coincident with investigations on chemical control of wheat curl mite, Aceria tulipae (K.), a vector of wheat-streak mosaic, it was necessary that the area of heaviest and most uniform populations on the wheat plant be determined for mite counts. Both greenhouse screening trials and field application tests of miticides are being conducted currently. Since little is known concerning this mite, certain biological observations are recorded below for the information of other workers.

The Levator Anguli Scapulae In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr. Jun 1954

The Levator Anguli Scapulae In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Professor St.-George Jackson Mivart first described the M. levator anguli scapulae in N ecturus in 1869. He noted an origin of the long, slender muscle on the occiput, and an insertion on "the inner side of the dorsum of the scapula.'' Mivart, earlier in the same year, had used the same name· for a homologous muscle in the hell-bender; in this, he apparently adapted Funk's (1827) and Rtidinger's (1868) earlier name. Kingsley (1907) used the name M. levator scapulae for the same muscle, following an earlier pattern set by Carus (1828), Schmidt, Goddard, & van der Hoeven (1864), Humphry (1871) …

Status Of The Wood Thrush In Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup Jun 1954

Status Of The Wood Thrush In Dallas County, Texas, William B. Stallcup

Field and Laboratory

In his Check List of Birds of Dallas County, Texas, Stillwell (1939) designated the Wood Thrush, Hylocichla mustelina (Gmelin), a rare transient. He states: "We rarely see, never hear, the Wood Thrush in Dallas ... ", and gives May 25 as the latest record of its occurrence in the County. Local bird enthusiasts, however, tell me that although the Wood Thrush is not a common spring migrant here, it is certainly not rare.

Geology Of The Cedar Hill Quadrangle, Dallas And Ellis Counties, Texas, Jackie L. Watkins Jun 1954

Geology Of The Cedar Hill Quadrangle, Dallas And Ellis Counties, Texas, Jackie L. Watkins

Field and Laboratory

In the Cedar Hill Quadrangle, bedrock consists of the Eagle Ford shale and Austin chalk, both of Upper Cretaceous age. The shale averages about 430 feet in thickness, with only the upper 140 feet exposed. This is predominantly a dark gray, fissile mudstone with limestone concretions and several thin limestone beds in the upper part of the section. A stratum of elastic limestone six inches thick lies 107 feet below the top and serves as a marker bed in areal mapping. The shale is disconformably overlain by the Austin chalk, at the base of which is a bed of conglomerate …

The Production Of 2, 3-Butanediol By Fermentation Of Sugar Beet Molasses, Keith B. Mccall, Carl E. Georgi

Papers in Microbiology

The production of 2,3-butanediol from natural materials by fermentation offers a practical and economical method for obtaining appreciable quantities of this important chemical. A variety of substrates have been used satisfactorily such as wood hydrolyzates (Perlman,1944), wheat (Katznelson, 1944.; Ledingham et al., 1945; Ward et al., 1945) and corn (Ward et al., 1945). The use of several grades of beet molasses prepared from home-grown beets has been reported by British (Freeman and Morrison, 1947) and Canadian workers (Anastassiadis and Wheat, 1953). Excellent yields were obtained which compared favorably with those resulting from the use of pure sucrose.

Although the characteristics …
