Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch Jul 1955

Unusual Pathogenicity Of Diphyllobothrium Sp. In A Black Bear, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The black bear, Ursus americanus Pallas, has been found to he an exceptionally good host for a common species of Diphyllobothrium, as evidenced by the large size attained by individual strobilae, and the duration of infections experimentally established. Since 1950, the writer has used at least five of these bears annually in the study of Diphyllobothrium spp. With the single exception reported herein, no adverse effect to the hosts has been recognized.

Separation Of Carbon From Deinking Waste By Means Of Flotation, Lester R. Beeman Jun 1955

Separation Of Carbon From Deinking Waste By Means Of Flotation, Lester R. Beeman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The technique of froth flotation, as practiced in the separation of mineral ores, has been applied to the separation of carbon black from the deinking waste of the paper industry.

On the theory that carbon black (from ink) has a positive charge in water, and clay and cellulose fibers have negative charges in water, experiments were of two types. First, it was attempted to float the carbon from the clay and cellulose fibers. Second, it was attempted to float the clay and cellulose fibers from the carbon.

Several possible formulas were found for separating carbon black from deinking waste. Favorable …

Lending Operations Of The Farm Ownership Loan Program In South Dakota, Canute M. Johnson Jun 1955

Lending Operations Of The Farm Ownership Loan Program In South Dakota, Canute M. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The focus of attention in this analysis of the FHA is upon the Farm Ownership Loan Program, In South Dakota, 728 Farm Ownership Loans were made in 55 of 69 counties during the 14 year period, 1938 through 1951, These loans averaged $8,620 and ranged in size from $2,000 to $16,000, There was a definite trend for the average size of loans to increase while the average size of farm ownership farms tended to decrease during the 1938-51 period. Since 1951, the average size of farms purchased under the program has increased because lean limits were increased to permit the …

Measurement Of The Degree Of Cellulose Degradation Caused By Fungi, Ronald C. Morgan

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this thesis is to obtain a method for determining the degree of cellulose degradation, caused by fungal attack, using testing methods commen to the paper industry rather than complex biochemical testing procedures.

Supercalender Variables (Iii) The Effects Of Static Pressure And Rolling Pressure On Paper, Donald V. Martin Jun 1955

Supercalender Variables (Iii) The Effects Of Static Pressure And Rolling Pressure On Paper, Donald V. Martin

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This thesis is the third in a series of fundamental investigations of the variables of supercalendering. The variables studied in this thesis are the internal effects derived from rolling pressure and of static pressure on paper. These variables were investigated by testing four grades of paper after being subjected to supercalendering and comparing them with similar grades pressed by a hydraulic press. The experimental results show that a definite comparative trend in the internal effects of paper were established between the rolling pressure caused by supercalendering and static pressure given by a hydraulic press. The physical properties tested were Mullen, …

The Bonding Of Felted Glass Fibers By The Use Of Ordinary Papermakers' Wet-Strength Resins, Kenneth C. Rasmussen Jun 1955

The Bonding Of Felted Glass Fibers By The Use Of Ordinary Papermakers' Wet-Strength Resins, Kenneth C. Rasmussen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Papermakers' wet-strength resins have been added to felted glass fibers as to increase the strength of the fibers.

On the basis that a stronger sheet of paper made from glass fibers could be put to many uses, experiments were of two types. First, an excess of wet-strength resins were added to the fibers. Second, handsheets made of one hundred per-cent glass fibers were dipped into a two per-cent resin tub-sizing solution.

Favorable results were obtained in both cases.

Bulletin No. 376 - Potato Production, Utah 1953: An Economic Analysis, E. M. Morrison, W. G. Kearl Jun 1955

Bulletin No. 376 - Potato Production, Utah 1953: An Economic Analysis, E. M. Morrison, W. G. Kearl

UAES Bulletins

The potato enterprise is important in providing a cash crop and a means of diversifying and intensifying the operations on many of Utah's irrigated farms. It is particularly important in those areas where, because of short growing season or inadequate markets, other intensive crops cannot be produced economically.

Potatoes have accounted for around 2.5 percent of the total cash farm income and around 10 percent of the cash farm income from crop sales over the past several years. The gross value of the crop has been between four and five million dollars in 8 of the last 12 years from …

Bulletin No. 377 - Performance Testing Studies With Beef Cattle, James A. Bennett, Doyle J. Matthews Jun 1955

Bulletin No. 377 - Performance Testing Studies With Beef Cattle, James A. Bennett, Doyle J. Matthews

UAES Bulletins

The goal in beef cattle breeding is the production of animals that make rapid and efficient gains and have desirable conformation. Performance testing has recently been advanced as a means of identifying individuals possessing superior productive qualities and as a means of evaluating sires for transmitting these qualities to their offspring. This report gives the results of performance tests conducted with Hereford and Shorthorn calves fed over a constant time period as well as the results of a supplemental study undertaken to gain information that might add refinement to the evaluation of gains in beef cattle.
