Lum Woodruff, An Early Meteorologist In Michigan And Texas, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

The present fragmentary note on an early meteorologist in Texas is published in the hope that further information of Mr. Woodruff may be forthcoming. Fourteen years ago (Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 45, 284, 1942) I published a very brief note on Woodruff in the vain hope that the historians of Texas might be able to clear up the obscurities of his life; I hope that the present note, which goes to meteorologists and historians of science, may meet with a better fate. At least I shall have put on record what are the known facts regarding Mr. Lum Woodruff.

William Lloyd began his career as a collector and student of birds in western and southeastern Texas in 1880, after having come to Texas in 1876. For some time he lived in San Antonio (the information is fragmentary in many details), and in this period (1879) he first emerges as the discoverer of cement-rock near San Antonio, which resulted (1880) in the first cement manufactory west of the Mississippi River.

Marketing Cream In Plastic Bags, James L. Olson Oct 1956

Marketing Cream In Plastic Bags, James L. Olson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Because quality directly affects both price and consumption, one of the basic problems facing the butter industry in South Dakota is quality improvement. Under the price support program certain minimum quality standards have to be complied with before surplus butter can be sold to the government. One-fourth of the butter produced in South Dakota does not meet this minimum quality requirement, assuming that conditions have not changed since 1951-1952. Farm separated cream constituted 70.6 percent of the butterfat marketed in South Dakota in 1955. Cream is an important source of farm revenue in South Dakota because it yields a year …

Consumption And Preference For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag Oct 1956

Consumption And Preference For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Most of the butter manufactured by South Dakota creameries is Grade B or under as determined by our present Federal grading system. A recent South Dakota study showed that 81 per cent of the butter was Grade B and 19 per cent Grade C, The same study found that about 80 per cent of South Dakota Butter was shipped to markets where a large amount of the other butter was of a higher grade and premiums were paid for higher quality. Present quality standards for butter are based to a large extent on taste preferences of consumers which were assumed …

Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 1956

Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

In recent years reclamation activities in the Columbia Basin of Washington have resulted in profound changes in the character of the entire landscape throughout this region. The present study is an attempt to clarify some of the biological effects of impoundment behind O'Sullivan Dam in the Potholes area, Grant County (Johnsgard 1955b). In this area, a large expanse of moving sand dunes and a high water table are responsible for causing the formation of numerous small water areas, or "potholes," between the dunes. The physical nature of the area and its limited potentialities have made it of little value to …

Observations On Shipleya Inermis Fuhrmann, 1908 (Cestoda: Acoleidae), Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch Oct 1956

Observations On Shipleya Inermis Fuhrmann, 1908 (Cestoda: Acoleidae), Marietta Voge, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Shipleya inermis, described by Fuhrmann (1908) and redescribed by Baer (1940), is known from only few specimens. The first and only North American record of this species was published by Webster (1951), who reported the finding of two specimens in dowitchers. Examination of a large number of cestodes from dowitchers collected by Rausch, and of cestodes from the Helminthological Collection of the United States National Museum yielded specimens which are without doubt Shipleya inermis. However, some of our observations which are reported here do not agree with Baer's description. In particular, we are unable to agree with Baer …
