Utilization Of Surplus Milk In The Small Dairy Plant: 2. Soft And Semi-Soft Hoop Drained Cheeses, P. A. Downs
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The purpose of this series of publications is to describe how a variety of products may be prepared in plants to more profitably utilize milk. Each type of product is described in detail, methods of manufacturing outlined, and the equipment and supplies needed are listed. As far as possible similar equipment can be used for several products. In this publication the preparation of a group of cheeses of the soft and semi-soft hoop drained type is presented.

Further Tests Of Band Placement Of Insecticides For Clover Root Borer Control, C. R. Weaver, K. P. Pruess, J. L. Parsons
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Weaver & Haynes (1955) described a method of placement of insecticides in bands under red clover seed that achieved control of the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsh.). Band placement was as effective at 0.75 pound of toxicant per acre as broadcast treatments at 1 pound or more as reported by Gyrisco et al. (1954) and App & Everly (1950). Since the 1951–53 tests were carried out in one location on small plots and applied by a farm crew experienced in experimental procedures, it was desired to test the band placement method more extensively. Tests in 1954–56 were conducted at …

An Ecological Survey Of Maple Products As A Natural Resource Of Athens Township, Calhoun County, State Of Michigan, Ralph P. Gies
Masters Theses
I. The Problem
Statement of the problem. It was the purpose of this investigation to undertake a field study in Athens Township, Calhoun County, State of Michigan in order to (1) determine the ecological factors necessary for maple sap production; (2) relate the extent to which the natural resource is being used; and (3) determine economic and social values to the syrup producers. The information was compiled through the sue of interviews, questionnaires, research, and participation in a community project.

A Morphological Study Of Some North American Sitona (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), George J. Kidd
A Morphological Study Of Some North American Sitona (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), George J. Kidd
Theses and Dissertations
This study was undertaken to identify, if possible, some morphological characteristics of the U. S. Sitona species that would help simplify the classification of this difficult group. Because of extreme difficulty in obtaining positively identified specimens of all species reported, the scope was limited to eight identified species and one unidentified series. External structures studied include mouth parts, appendages, eyes, wings, and genitalia. The spermathecae were the only internal structures analyzed. Mandibular profiles were compared throughout the species represented and variations were noted. Labia and maxillae were observed but no distinctive differences were noticed. Antennae were found to be quite …

The Incidence Of Nasal Mites In Over-Wintering Red-Wing Blackbirds In The Vicinity Of Utah Lake, Utah, George M. Talley
Theses and Dissertations
This paper reports the incidence and associations of four species of mites, Paraneonyssus icteridius, Ptilonyssus n. sp. "A", Sternostoma n. sp. "A" , and Speleognathus sp., found in the nasal cavities of the common red-wing blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus ssp.) and Brewer's blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus cyanocephalus Wagler) over-wintering in the vicinity of Provo, Utah County, Utah. Three species of mites are reported for the first time from these birds, and two of these three are undescribed species.

Distribution Of The Mammals Of The Sandia And Manzano Mountains, New Mexico, Ronald R. Clothier
Biology ETDs
The Sandia and Manzano Mountain area is divided into communities based mainly on the major types of vegetation present. These communities and their relationships to biotic provinces, life zones, and habitats are described in the section that deals with the description of the area. Several collecting sites were established in each of these communities, and an effort was made to set traps in all available types of mammal habitats.

The Effects Of Adrenal Steroids On Electrolyte And Water Balance In Force-Fed Adrenalectomized Rats, Rodney T. Houlihan
Biology ETDs
The literature dealing with various aspects of adrenal cortical function is so voluminous that any review is necessarily incomplete, both with respect to topics treated and references cited. In this paper discussion is restricted to certain features of cortex function, namely the effects on water and electrolyte balance and weight maintenance.
The Embryology Of The Paradise Fish, Macropodus Opercularis Linnaeus, Lewis M. Mulkay
The Embryology Of The Paradise Fish, Macropodus Opercularis Linnaeus, Lewis M. Mulkay
Theses and Dissertations
The development of Sacropodus opercularis Linnaeus, (Perciformes: Anabantidae), is described from cleavage to five days post hatching. For the most part M. opercularis follows the pattern of typical teleostean development except as noted below: 1. The heart develops under the left eye along the anterior margin of the yolk sac. This is similar to that reported by Ingesoll (1951) for the Blue Gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus. 2. The ear develps from the head mesenchyme alongside the brain rather than from a placode. 3. The gut develops first in the posterior region then differentiates cephalad. It was also learned that: 1. No …

A Summer Deer Food Study In Tensas Parish, Louisiana, William James Sheffield Jr.
A Summer Deer Food Study In Tensas Parish, Louisiana, William James Sheffield Jr.
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Where deer have overpopulated their range, a thorough knowledge of range conditions and deer food habits is necessary to establish proper management. This study was made on an overpopulated deer range in Northeastern Louisiana. It provides information on certain phases of deer food habits not heretofore investigated in the region. The study procedure followed a modification of the Aldous Deer Browse Survey Method, whereby a percentage sample survey was made of the density of woody and herbaceous browse species and their utilization by deer. Vines made up 55 per cent, trees and shrubs 31 per cent, and forbs 14 per …
