A Note On “Vinzent's Texanische Pflanzen, 1847”, S. W. Geiser
A Note On “Vinzent's Texanische Pflanzen, 1847”, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
The Botanische Zeitung, 5, 447-48, May, 1847, printed the following note by Otto Boeckeler of Varel a/Jahde, Grand-duchy of Oldenburg. As no further notice appeared in subsequent volumes of the journal, and as it poses a problem that has concerned students regarding the identity of the collector "Vinzent" in Texas, I translate the note freely. […] The foregoing notice, when it came to my attention ten years ago, piqued my interest in a Texan collector who has long been lost sight of.

In an especially equipped room in the Fondren Science Building on the campus of Southern Methodist University may be found the University's sheet map collection. There steel map cases hold a file of more than 93,000 maps and charts and 3,500 aerial photographs. In addition, atlases, gazetteers, and cartographic bibliographies are available for research and the large world globe offers more than 22,000 place names for reference. There are map tables suitable for assembling map series. The Map Library now ranks as one of the ten largest university map libraries in the United States and the largest in the Southwest. …
Correlation By Insoluble Residues In The Austin Chalk Of Southern Dallas County, Texas, Thomas Ellis Williams
Correlation By Insoluble Residues In The Austin Chalk Of Southern Dallas County, Texas, Thomas Ellis Williams
Field and Laboratory
A partial composite section totalling 300 feet was constructed for the Upper Cretaceous Austin Chalk through correlation of overlapping portions of some of the larger incomplete sections. The correlations were effected primarily by insoluble residues in conjunction with thicknesses and weathering profiles. Bar graphs based on insoluble percentages indicate that the formation is composed of the following principal lithologic types: marly limestone, marlstone-limestone, limy marlstone, and marlstone. These are variably distributed vertically and to a lesser degree laterally. The subdivisions of lower chalk, middle marl, and upper chalk are a function of the proportions in which the basic lithologic types …
The Musculus Mylohyoideus And M. Interhyoideus In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
The Musculus Mylohyoideus And M. Interhyoideus In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
Field and Laboratory
Casual dissection of the ventral surface of the head in Necturus reveals an extensive area of muscle fibers crossing the throat and extending from the tip of the lower jaw to the gular fold. The connective tissues and fascia in this area partly mask the fibers; and the muscle fibers collectively have in several instances been described as constituting a single muscle, the M. mylohyoideus. In reality two separate muscles are involved, and each consists of two parts. Here follows a tabulation of the synonymy, and a brief description of the muscles.

Francois Crepin On Botanizing, Lloyd H. Shinners
Field and Laboratory
Late in the 19th Century the younger Hooker was led to exclaim to some of the botanical students of the day, "You young men do not know your plants!" What would he think of the modern graduate in botany? Now one gets a Ph.D. in the science without knowing most of the plants he encounters every day. Chromosomes, statistics, fancied phylogenies, current fads in morphology and physiology--about such things, like the modern major general, he is "teeming with a lot of news," at least until oral exams are over. If he goes on to teach, it will be to relay …
Rat And Mouse Control On The Farm, John A. Lofgren
Rat And Mouse Control On The Farm, John A. Lofgren
SDSU Extension Circulars
Each year the Norway ( or brown) rat and the common house mouse consume thousands of bushels of grain and other foods on South Dakota farms. They attack grain in the field and in farm storage. At the time they consume the grain they also pollute and contaminate it by their droppings, urine and hair. Every 24 hours each rat voids an average of 70 pellets and about 15 cc of urine. Such contamination makes food grains subject to seizure by the Food and Drug Administration because they are unfit for human use. The monetary losses resulting from such seizure …

Since 1937, when alveolar hydatid disease was first recognized on the Japanese island of Rebun, 25 cases have been investigated clinically. About one percent of the population of the island is believed to be infected. (Yamashita et al., 1955). Five cases also have been reported from other islands, some of these involving emigrants from Rebun (Inukai et al., 1955; Yamashita, 1956).

The Effects Of Desoxycorticosterone Trimethylacetate, Desoxycorticosterone Acetate, Cortisone Acetate, And Adrenalectomy On The Liver Succinoxidase And Glutamic Dehydrogenase Activity Of Rats Fed 3'-Methyl-4-Dimethylaminoazobenzene (3'-Me-Dab), John P. Davanzo
Biology ETDs
Experimental production of liver cancer by means of azo dyes is a standardized and convenient method for study of the cancer problem. The rat is the animal of choice for this type of experimentation because this animal is readily susceptible to liver carcinogenesis upon being fed azo dyes. Mice are only partially susceptible and rabbits and guinea pigs will not develop cancer of the liver by ingestion of the azo dyes (E. C. Miller and J. A. Miller, 1947, p.473). The liver, likewise, is an appropriate organ for study. Enzymologists and cytologists today regard the liver cell as the best …

The Collembola Of New Mexico With Especial Reference To The North-Central Part Of The State, Harold George Scott
Biology ETDs
The is one of the first faunistic studies to be completed in New Mexico and one of the first comprehensive analyses of the ecological distribution of the species of Collembola in as large and varied an area as New Mexico. One hundred fifty-two Collembola species, of which 24 are described as new, are recorded from New Mexico. In addition four species, of which one is described as new, are recorded for the first time from Colorado. Prior to the present study, only four species of Collembola were recorded from New Mexico.

Assessment Values And Taxes On Farm Land In South Dakota 1955 And 1956, Ray F. Pengra
Assessment Values And Taxes On Farm Land In South Dakota 1955 And 1956, Ray F. Pengra
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Records in the Register of Deeds office on farm land sales were listed to secure the following report. When consideration was not given in the deed Internal Revenue stamps were used to secure an estimate of the consideration. Information on assessed valuations and amount of taxes were secured from the assessors' records and the auditors' books. Only those tracts were used for which consideration, assessment values and amount of taxes levied for both 1955 and 1956 were available on the tract sold. Where only part of a tract assessed was sold, the sale was omitted in this tabulation.
